I Died and Became a Noble's Heir
Chapter 689: Royal Decree
King Maelor’s hand gripped the armrest of the throne so tightly that the stone itself cracked beneath his palm.
The Queen’s perfect composure remained intact, but her green eyes held a glint of fear.
Her hand released her daughters’ arms and moved to her own throat in a mirror gesture of the panic visible in her children’s faces.
Miravelle’s silver-blonde hair seemed to glow even more brightly in the reflected light from the scrying mirror, as if her body was responding to the threat with visible terror.
Elysanthe’s elaborate braids seemed fragile, inadequate armor against whatever was approaching.
Rosethiel’s hand covered her mouth, suppressing a scream at the terror of what she was witnessing.
"Mobilize every defense force," King Maelor commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of wartime decree. "Activate all protective barriers. Prepare the palace for siege."
He turned toward the Council members, and his expression held something that transcended anger or betrayal. It held the weight of a ruler who had just authorized a young man’s solitary deployment against forces far beyond what anyone had predicted.
"Remember, King Maelor, you authorized Jack to fight by himself. You cannot send the army to aid him. This is all on him."
King Maelor sighed at how the events had turned out.
"Jack Kaiser will depart for the borderlands immediately," Maelor said, each word carefully enunciated despite the foundation-shaking vibration of the alarms that had begun echoing through the palace. "The decree stands. He will face whatever is approaching with the power he carries and the divine warrior who has bound herself to him."
Sariel’s shock began to crystallize into something colder. His mind was already processing what this meant, what had gone so catastrophically wrong with his calculations. His organization had sent him to lure a pack of wild creatures to eliminate a single human. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Instead, something far larger, far more dangerous, was descending on the capital.
And the only person standing between that approaching force and the entire kingdom was Jack Kaiser, now bound by wartime decree to face it alone.
-------
The grand hall occupied the palace’s central space, a vast chamber designed to accommodate diplomatic functions and formal announcements.
The ceiling rose ninety feet, and the walls were lined with sconces that cast amber light across polished marble floors. Normally, the space conveyed grandeur and stability.
Currently, it conveyed panic as they tried to plan to stop a war.
The assembled nobility, dignitaries, and high-ranking palace staff had gathered in response to the alarm summons.
They clustered in small groups, their voices rising and falling with the kind of tension that arises when people realize something significant is happening but lack the information to comprehend its scale.
Jack Kaiser entered from one of the side corridors, his white hair catching the light from the sconces.
He had a calm serenity on his face. Faye Vesper moved at his side, her presence radiating divine certainty
Her presence alone made people temporarily forget about the alarms. The one calming presence in the midst of turmoil.
The assembled nobility’s chatter ceased almost immediately. The focus of the room shifted toward the human Chosen One and the divine warrior who had publicly claimed him as her destined partner.
Then the royal messengers stepped forward.
They moved with the particular formality that characterized official palace business, but their faces carried tension that their postures could not entirely conceal.
Behind them, a contingent of the King’s personal guard cleared a path through the assembled crowd, moving people aside.
The lead messenger carried a sealed scroll. The seal, bearing the imprint of wartime protocols, represented a symbol infrequently utilized, invoked, or observed beyond the historical archives detailing the kingdom’s most profound crises.
Jack’s expression shifted subtly. Faye’s hand moved closer to her blade, her divine senses apparently detecting something in the atmospheric pressure that communicated a threat.
The messenger approached and unrolled the scroll with the kind of formal precision that marked an official royal decree.
His voice carried across the grand hall, amplified by someone trained to ensure that significant announcements reached every listener.
"By the authority of King Maelor, invoked through the wartime protocols of the Elven Kingdom’s constitution, and signed this day in response to an active crisis threatening the capital," the messenger began, his tone carrying the weight of absolute official sanction, "the following decree is issued and becomes immediately binding on all parties within the kingdom’s jurisdiction."
He paused, allowing silence to compress the room.
"Jack Kaiser, Chosen One of substantial divine backing and carrier of integrated draconic essence, is hereby ordered to depart the capital immediately and proceed to the eastern borderlands to address the convergence of hostile draconic forces that his presence has attracted. He is authorized to employ any power necessary to address this threat. He is forbidden from requesting military support, palace resources, or auxiliary defense forces. His mission is to neutralize the approaching threat independently, supported only by himself and no one born in Caeloria."
The messenger maintained a consistently neutral and formal tone throughout the delivery of the message, devoid of any discernible emotion.
"Refusal of this deployment will result in immediate execution as a wartime security hazard. The King’s authority in this matter is absolute and supersedes all other considerations. This decree takes effect immediately and remains binding until the approaching draconic threat is eliminated or the capital falls. Such is the will of King Maelor. Such is the law of the Elven Kingdom."
The messenger rolled the scroll back up and extended it toward Jack with the formal precision of someone delivering a death sentence.
The grand hall remained absolutely silent.
Jack’s white hair caught the light as he took the scroll. His expression showed no visible reaction.
There was no anger, betrayal, or emotional response of any kind.
He accepted the document and scanned its contents, processing not just the words but the full legal and political implications contained within.
Faye Vesper’s hand had moved completely to her blade’s hilt. The divine warrior’s eyes had fixed on the messenger with an intensity that communicated extreme displeasure at the decree being delivered.
"When do I depart?" Jack asked, his voice carrying the same calm confidence that had marked him since his arrival in Caeloria.
The messenger consulted with the royal guard captain, receiving a wordless acknowledgment. "Immediately, Chosen One. The King has authorized your immediate passage from the capital to the borderlands. Your destination has been marked on the scroll."
Jack turned, scroll still in his hand, and moved toward the exit with Faye at his side. The divine warrior’s presence seemed to increase in intensity as she walked, as if she were preparing for immediate deployment to face whatever threat lay beyond the capital’s walls.
No individual intervened to impede his progress. No solicitations of assistance or partnership were extended. The recently issued wartime directive, delivered with meticulous formality, remained unchallenged.
Instead, the assembled nobility and dignitaries stood motionless, watching the human Chosen One depart toward what might very well be his death, bound by royal decree to face an unknown enemy alone.
The grand hall’s silence seemed to compress further, becoming a weight pressing against consciousness.
Jack Kaiser had arrived in Caeloria as an honored guest.
He was leaving as the kingdom’s only shield against approaching apocalypse, bound by law and circumstances beyond his control to face whatever was converging on the borderlands without support, without assistance, without even the option of retreat.
"Faye, stay here," Jack said softly.
"No! I will not leave you alone!" Faye shouted as she bounced up and down.
"This is not up for debate. Your law has exiled me from help in your kingdom. But it doesn’t matter, I will solve this issue alone." Jack proclaimed.
