Chapter 40 - Danger & Danger & Danger!

"When are you going to help me get superpowers?" Agatha asked.

"The class I have in mind for you is the Huntress. But I don't have the required material to perform the ritual for it. So you will have to wait a while before you can become a class holder," Kev replied.

"No problem, I can wait," Agatha said. "Just don't keep me waiting for too long."

"I won't," Kev promised confidently.

Half an hour later, they were attacked by a wave of revenants.

Kev charged ahead to demolish them singlehandedly.

Agatha discovered she didn't need to do anything. She just sat back, relaxed, and watched the man do manly things. At that moment, the only thing she was missing was a bucket of popcorn, and it would have been a full cinema experience.

A while later, an evolved revenant sneakily pulled Agatha into an illusion while Kev wasn't looking.

It controlled her like a puppet on strings, fooling her senses in a wicked manner to have her stab Kev in the back.

If not for his ability to detect danger before it struck, he would have been seriously injured in that ambush. He sensed the blade approach and stopped it in time, then he immobilized Agatha and scrutinized the darkness, locating the evolved revenant that had put her under an illusion.

When their eyes met in the shadows, the evolved revenant felt a chill crawl down its spine.

According to its understanding, humans couldn't see in the dark. So how did Kev see it, even though it had taken all the right steps to remain hidden?

Its question was destined to remain unanswered, as it was quickly dispatched by Kev.

Its death broke the illusion Agatha was trapped in, leaving her dazed and confused.

One second she was hunting in a forest, and the next. Poof. She was back in the very hellish place she thought she had escaped with Kev's help.

She couldn't understand what was happening, so she turned to Kev for answers.

After learning what had happened, she couldn't stop apologizing to him.

She only stopped when Kev told her it wasn't her fault.

She was just a victim of a nefarious being's bloody scheme. She didn't need to apologize for something beyond her control.

Another hour quickly passed with the two of them searching for the exit of the Abyssal Burrow and Natasha occasionally spectating and guiding them.

In that span, they had many more dangerous encounters, but with Kev taking the lead, they overcame them all without much trouble.

"Do you hear that?" Kev said.

Agatha nodded without hesitation. "It's the growls of revenants."

Kev focused, trying to sense where the sounds were coming from. He quickly discovered they were just around the corner.

"It seems like there are a lot of revenants in the space connected to this tunnel. Let's advance cautiously," Kev said thoughtfully.

"I don't see a reason why we shouldn't," Agatha responded.

After that.

Only a minute passed before they arrived at a vast open space with stalactites hanging from the ceiling.

A long stone bridge stretched before them, supported by pillars rising from immeasurable depths.

On the opposite end of the bridge was an area crowded with revenants.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

They were growling and pounding nonstop on a massive door, trying to break it down.

Under their relentless assault, the door had already begun to show signs of breaking. It was covered in spiderweb-like cracks.

With a single glance, Kev determined it wouldn't hold for long.

He turned to Agatha, exchanging a thoughtful glance with her.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Hearing Kev's words, Agatha nodded.

"Naturally. There's only one reason why these mindless creatures would behave so aggressively—they've seen the living and want to devour them whole. So to say, there are people behind that door. Do you want to help them?"

So far, she had survived solely by depending on Kev. She had no intention of spoiling their relationship for the sake of some strangers. If he wanted to help, she would gladly follow his lead. If he didn't, although reluctance would gnaw at her heart, she would still obey.

"We have to help," Kev said. "There could be someone we know behind that door. Even if that isn't the case, turning a blind eye to the plight of others doesn't sit well with me, especially when I have the power to make a difference."

He could walk away from this. He could choose not to confront the massive group of revenants and let them break down the door and devour the people inside. But then, where would his conscience be?

Furthermore, if he were in their shoes, wouldn't he want to be saved?

So, he decided to intervene.

Seeing that he had chosen the path of compassion, Agatha smiled softly.

"You consider all the possibilities, and you're kind. Looks like I won't regret my choice."

"Do you know why she said that?" Lydia asked Natasha in the Temple of Miracles.

Natasha stopped spectating, turned to Lydia, and nodded.

If Kev had a cruel heart, there would've been no end to Agatha's suffering in the future.

But time and again, he had proved that wasn't the case.

He wasn't a bad person.

He was good-hearted.

At the same time, it had to be said that he wasn't naive. He wouldn't let others take ill advantage of himself, and if he had certain advantages over others, he would manipulate them to the best of his ability to benefit himself, but he wouldn't do it in a way that caused irreversible harm out of sheer greed.

"I think it wouldn't be bad to recruit him into our family," Natasha said.

Lydia shook her head. "Our family has immortals as guards. He wouldn't fit in."

_____

"Take these and provide me with cover," Kev said to Agatha as he handed her a loaded rifle with the safety off and a few magazines.

Agatha grabbed the things from his hand and prepared to fight.
