Chapter 197 -197: Receiving the Children

At Sister Lan’s home, Su Meixi met Fang Xia and Fang Shuai.

Fang Xia was a girl, fair and pretty, just a bit thin, with large eyes that seemed to speak for themselves, curious yet shy as she looked at Su Meixi.

Fang Shuai, with a head as fierce as a tiger’s, obviously a very energetic boy, but perhaps because he had been living under someone else’s roof for so long, he had to restrain himself to appear quieter.

Both children knew Gu Wei, and upon seeing him, they greeted, “Hello, Captain Gu!”

Gu Wei went over and took Fang Shuai’s hand, then had Fang Xia hold Su Meixi’s hand.

Fang Shuai really liked Gu Wei. They had played soccer together, so he naturally took Gu Wei’s hand.

Fang Xia, however, was a bit more reserved.

Su Meixi herself was also a little restrained. She had been independent from a young age and wasn’t used to much physical closeness with others, including children.

But she still took the initiative to hold Fang Xia’s hand and then said, “Fang Xia, let’s go back to Auntie’s home, okay?”

Both of them wore big backpacks, and each had a suitcase.

Xiao Ding helped with carrying the suitcases.

After arriving at Gu Wei and Su Meixi’s house, Su Meixi took out slippers she had prepared ahead of time.

Fang Xia quickly said, “There’s no need, Aunt Su, we have our own slippers.”

They were accustomed to bringing their slippers wherever they went, so as not to trouble anyone to buy new ones for them.

Watching Fang Xia and Fang Shuai go through the suitcases to get their slippers, Su Meixi hurriedly said with a smile, “Wear the ones Auntie bought for you first. These were chosen for your age, but I’m not sure if they’ll fit you.”

Su Meixi brought out two pairs of cartoon slippers with characters on them that children liked, and the material was very soft, tempting one to slip them on and walk around.

The eyes of the two children brightened.

Although they had their own slippers, theirs were worn out, and the soles were starting to fall apart. The people who had taken them in before had noticed but, used to being economical and seeing that the slippers still fitted, hadn’t bought new ones.

After changing into the slippers, joy was evident in the children’s eyes.

Su Meixi then said, “Now you can put away your luggage in your room upstairs.”

Gu Wei carried their suitcases upstairs, one in each hand.

Reaching the top, the siblings were shocked to discover that they each had their own room. This was completely new to them.

In the several foster homes they had lived in before, they either shared a room together or slept with other children of the same gender. They had never had their own rooms.

The other families either lived in two-bedroom or three-bedroom apartments and, with elders and children present, there simply wasn’t space.

They looked at their rooms, each with a new bedsheet and desk, like something out of a dream.

Fang Xia stood hesitantly at the doorway.

Gu Wei asked her, “Why aren’t you going in?”

Tears welled up in Fang Xia’s eyes, but she didn’t speak.

She was afraid to live in such a nice room, knowing that it would be temporary, and feared the loss she would feel when it was time to leave.

She was already ten years old, and being a girl, she was more sensitive. She understood that she was different from others, and the instructor had always taught them to be grateful, to study hard, and to repay those who had helped them one day.

“Captain Gu, I… I would like to live in that smaller room downstairs.”

Indeed, there was a small room downstairs, originally intended for a maid, very small.

Su Meixi knew what Fang Xia was thinking, for she had been like that as a young girl.

She insisted on taking Fang Xia in, laughing, “Fang Xia, we must learn to enjoy what comes our way. This room was prepared for you, so live here. If you stay in the smaller room downstairs, others might say Aunt Su is mistreating you. Do you really want to make Aunt Su the subject of gossip?”

Only then did Fang Xia feel reassured enough to put down her luggage with confidence.

The more Fang Xia behaved this way, the more Su Meixi’s heart ached, as if she saw her younger self.

“Can you organize your luggage by yourself?” Su Meixi asked.

Fang Xia nodded, “Yes.”

“Good, then you can start organizing your things. Aunt Su and Uncle Gu are going to cook. Once it’s ready, we’ll call you down.”

Fang Xia smiled at her and nodded.

After Su Meixi and Gu Wei went downstairs, Fang Xia carefully sat on the bed, touched the quilt, and then sat at the new desk. Before long, her brother Fang Shuai joined her, excitedly saying, “My room is blue; yours is purple!”

Fang Xia said with joy, “I really like it here.”

“Me too!” Fang Shuai whispered to Fang Xia, “If only we could stay here forever.”

“I wish that too, but…” Fang Xia’s head drooped in sadness but then she smiled and said, “Well, we stay at each place for a month anyway, so sooner or later we’ll come back.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Su Meixi and Gu Wei prepared several dishes, including children’s favorite chicken wings, fragrant pan-fried tofu, and sparerib and radish soup, each in generous portions.

Fang Xia and Fang Shuai were not picky when it came to food; wherever they stayed, the families were eager to prepare delicious food, careful not to treat them poorly. Hence, they were used to eating well.

However, the other homes had larger families, with both old and young, whereas here it was just the four of them in a house that felt incredibly warm and homey.

This made the food even more appealing.

After finishing their meal, the siblings also offered to wash the dishes. Su Meixi wanted to stop them, but Gu Wei smiled and said to let them do it. The instructor also taught them to always help with household chores, no matter where they stayed. In the Military District compound, there were no lazy people; everyone did housework.

Feng City.

Working overtime in the office, Gu Cheng received another call from Li Zhen.

“Ah Cheng, I have something to discuss, can we meet?”

Gu Cheng immediately thought of Zhou Yuan.

He hesitated, “I’m a bit busy at the moment, is it urgent?”

“If you’re busy, never mind, it’s not particularly urgent.” Li Zhen chuckled, then added, “Well, you’re busy, I’ll hang up.”

Gu Cheng continued with his overtime.

Later, it was Assistant Bai who reminded him, “Mr. Gu, it seems Miss Li Zhen is in trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?” Gu Cheng didn’t even look up, his eyes fixed on the computer monitor.

“She posted on Moments, seems to be in the hospital, not sure what happened.” Assistant Bai handed Gu Cheng the Moments post to see.

Li Zhen and Gu Cheng used to date, and Assistant Bai had joined Gu Group during that time, so he knew Li Zhen. Recently, when Li Zhen returned to the country, she had added Assistant Bai on WeChat.

Upon seeing the post, Gu Cheng was taken aback.

Li Zhen had probably called about this same issue.

He quickly called Li Zhen back, “Are you at a hospital? What happened?”

“My daughter, she’s ingested some medicine by mistake.”

Li Zhen’s daughter had autism.
