America 1919-Chapter 916 - 313, Returning Home with the Beauty in Arms
"Why can’t I go in? I am a noble British Earl!"
As Donnie’s car arrived at the entrance of the Rothschild family’s estate, he saw a silver Rolls-Royce parked by the gate. Outside the car stood a man in his forties, dressed in a black tailcoat, arguing angrily with the gatekeeper.
"Earl Bock, I’m terribly sorry, but your name is not on our guest list!"
The gatekeeper politely replied.
Donnie, sitting in his car, noticed the driver inside the Rolls-Royce showing an impatient expression, which was not typical for a professional driver.
"There must be a mistake. I am certain Mr. Rothschild would have invited me!"
Earl Bock exclaimed loudly.
The gatekeeper maintained his composure and said, "Earl Bock, there is no mistake. We hope you don’t make this situation difficult for us. If you disrupt the esteemed guests behind you, it could harm your reputation as well!"
Earl Bock appeared somewhat embarrassed.
"Sir, I believe there has been a misunderstanding. Perhaps Mr. Rothschild simply forgot to notify the staff about Earl Bock’s name. Allow me to escort Earl Bock inside, and if there’s an issue, I will personally discuss it with Mr. Rothschild."
Donnie spoke through the car window.
The gatekeeper recognized Donnie and knew that tonight’s ball was specially hosted by his employer to honor Donnie Block.
Since Donnie had spoken, the gatekeeper couldn’t say much more.
"Since Mr. Block has said so, Earl Bock may enter."
Earl Bock immediately flashed a triumphant smile, graciously thanked Donnie, then returned to his car and drove into the Rothschild family’s estate.
When Janine Woburg entered the hall arm-in-arm with Donnie, the pair instantly became the center of attention.
It wasn’t only because Donnie and Janine were the youngest, most handsome, and beautiful couple at the ball, but also because everyone knew the star of tonight’s event was Donnie Block!
However, this didn’t mean that everyone rushed to engage with Donnie right away.
As mentioned previously, the British are proud and aloof.
The Rothschild family’s ball naturally attracted prominent British figures—some were tycoons, others were nobles. Even though many of them couldn’t match Donnie’s wealth, to them, Donnie still resembled a nouveau riche.
So, they watched him from the sidelines.
Of course, Donnie also had friends here; one of them was Winston Churchill, who had returned to England and received an invitation.
Upon seeing Donnie, Winston Churchill went out of his way to greet him.
"I didn’t expect you to have business dealings with the Rothschild family!"
Although Winston Churchill didn’t know the specifics of Donnie’s relationship with the Rothschild family, the fact that the Rothschilds had organized a ball specifically for Donnie indicated that their collaboration was remarkable!
Donnie smiled and said, "Your funds are ready. They’ve been deposited into the dedicated account via the Birmingham Commercial Trade Company. You can access them anytime."
Donnie’s words immediately elicited a serious expression of gratitude from Winston Churchill, who forgot to probe further about Donnie’s business ties with the Rothschild family.
It was then that the three Rothschild brothers appeared in the hall. They personally approached Donnie and warmly welcomed him with great enthusiasm.
The obvious display of hospitality from the Rothschild family left many guests, including Winston Churchill, speculating about the nature of Donnie’s dealings with the family.
But no matter how much the guests probed indirectly, neither Donnie nor the three Rothschild brothers revealed any details.
Even though the ball was hosted by the Rothschild family, in essence, it was not much different from a typical ball.
The only difference was the caliber of the attendees and the extravagance of the event.
After entertaining several irrelevant individuals, Donnie found himself back with Winston Churchill. At that moment, Donnie noticed Earl Bock—the very man he had encountered at the entrance earlier.
Now, Earl Bock was fervently trying to make himself noticeable to those around him. However, it was clear that no one here paid him any heed.
They only exchanged a few perfunctory words before losing interest in interacting with him further.
"What’s the story with this Earl Bock?"
Donnie asked Winston Churchill.
Winston Churchill glanced at Earl Bock and chuckled indifferently, "Him? As you’ve seen, he’s one of the fallen nobles of the British Empire…."
Through Winston Churchill’s introduction, Donnie learned about Earl Bock’s background.
It turned out Earl Bock’s ancestor was the illegitimate child of King Charles II. Like Charles II’s other illegitimate children, he was made a duke. However, after his ancestor’s death, their family’s rank was downgraded to earls.
Despite being granted the title of duke, Earl Bock’s ancestor didn’t gain substantial assets or large estates—just a few manors. Over several centuries, the Bock family had sporadically produced a few strong figures who led the family to temporary peaks, but such individuals were far too rare.
