Chapter 902: Chapter 854: Making Acquaintances Driven by Interests

The black car turned onto Wilshire Boulevard; the man driving glanced at the distant Ritz-Carlton Hotel and seemed dubious about his girlfriend in the passenger seat. He asked, “How did you get to know Martin Davis? He’s interested in the script you wrote?”

Greta Gerwig turned to face her boyfriend Noah and, with a smile, replied, “What, you don’t trust me?”

“That’s not what I mean.” The traffic light ahead turned red and Noah gradually slowed down. “I just feel like…”

Greta cut him off, “Let me guess, I’m an actress and a screenwriter who only directed an experimental film in 2008 that didn’t even make it to theaters. So how could I possibly impress Martin Davis, right?”

Noah, somewhat embarrassed, gave a small laugh. “It’s just that this morning you told me Martin was interested in your script and asked me to come along with you. I was completely unprepared. It’s all so sudden.”

Greta and her boyfriend had always had a good relationship. She explained, “Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve any sleeping around or messing about. Ever since we got serious, I’ve barely acted and have completely transitioned to being a screenwriter, as you know why.”

Noah quickly replied, “That’s not what I meant.”

“Just hear me out.” Greta briefly reminisced and then elaborated, “You know Mandy Moore, and I’m friends with her. Over a year ago, Mandy joined Martin’s ‘La La Land’ project as a dance designer. One day when I went to Disney Studio to see Mandy, I saw her training Silsa Ronan.”

Noah remarked, “Silsa shares your interests and is a good friend, a close one.”

However, Greta shook her head, laughing, “Shares my interests? I specifically befriended her, and she, well, is quite an interesting girl. She probably found me useful and so accepted my offer of friendship.”

Compared to his girlfriend, Noah, who was intensely focused on writing, was relatively straightforward. He said, “It sounds complicated.”

Greta commented, “It’s actually very simple. I suspect that besides being Martin Davis’s student, Silsa is likely also his lover. There are many actresses in Hollywood who are prettier and more talented than Silsa, so why did Martin Davis choose her?”

She laughed, “Dear, you know, I’ve had creative ideas for my script for a long time and have always wanted to direct, but without support from film companies and bigwigs, who would let a woman, especially one who’s only directed an experimental film, direct a project?”

Noah didn’t respond and simply played the listener.

Greta continued, “I didn’t know Martin, but I met Silsa through Mandy Moore, and I thought that was an opportunity. Later, the possibility that I could become one of the main screenwriters for ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ which Silsa heard about, probably from Martin, since Davis Studio was one of the investors. So naturally, Silsa and I became good friends.”

Noah sighed, “I thought you two were just simple friends.”

Greta spoke quietly, “There is no pure friendship among adults, it’s more about connections driven by interests.”

Her tone shifted, “Of course, Silsa is a good person. As long as you don’t cross her interests, she can be a very good friend, especially since she’s backed by Martin Davis!”

Noah drove through the intersection and arrived at the entrance of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. He parked the car and said, “This is as far as I go, my dear. Good luck.”

Greta picked up her briefcase, leaned in to kiss Noah, then got out of the car and headed straight into the hotel.

Silsa Ronan was waiting in the hotel lobby.

Seeing her, Greta walked briskly over and said, “Hey, Silsa, you could have just waited in your room.”

Silsa came up to hug Greta and responded, “Martin’s busy with work. I had nothing to do staying up there.”

She led the way, saying, “This way.”

As Greta followed, she glanced at Silsa and commented, “You look even fitter than before.”

Silsa smiled, “Maybe I’ve been dancing a lot these past two years.”

Greta, like a best friend, whispered, “For Martin, right?”

Silsa didn’t deny it: “I always need to excel in something unique that others can’t, to maintain my appeal.”

Greta understood, “Dancing increases your flexibility. Use the splits, and men will go crazy.”

“Right, you and Noah have been together since 2010,” Silsa humbly asked for advice, “How do you keep sparking Noah’s interest?”

Greta responded, “You have to keep surprising him, giving him new stimulations every once in a while.”

Silsa sighed internally, regretting unlocking this topic so quickly.

Fortunately, she was prepared in other ways.

Upon entering the private elevator, Greta returned to the main topic, “The script…Has Martin seen it?”

Silsa replied, “He has glanced over it, that’s why he wanted you to come talk about it.” She displayed a sisterly affection, “According to Martin’s habits, he will have you shoot a short film. You must agree to it. Only if the short film is well done will you possibly get the director’s position.”

Greta patted her bag, “I’ve already shot the short film.”

Silsa was a bit surprised, “You’re fast?”

“Women wanting to be directors need to put in more effort, be more persuasive,” Greta said with a deep sense of resignation, “At least Martin is willing to have a deep conversation with me. I have to thank you for that, Silsa. Without your recommendation, it would have been difficult to get this opportunity.”

She shrugged, “You know? Even though I’m the screenwriter for ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ when I talked to Disney Studios about preparing to write and direct a film on a women’s subject, they weren’t even interested in discussing it with me.”
