Chapter 55: Chapter 47 Husband and Wife Quarrel_1

Thankfully, there was no need to worry about crossing the lines or driving illegally. The heavy trucks were all manual, so there wouldn’t be any problems of not being able to drive due to failed signal transmission.

He drove carefully at first, and eventually found the groove of it, trickling out the streets and heading towards the community at a slow pace.

“Hummm…”

The red heavy truck cruised along the roads. Li Ming had never drove such a heavy vehicle before, hence he took it slow and was extremely cautious on his way back to the community.

Upon reaching the entrance to the residential area, he thought for a while, didn’t rush in, but continued to drive to a gas station. He took a gas can and filled up the fuel tank, then managed to find a spare fuel canister in the auxiliary compartment, and filled that one up too. Only then, satisfied, did he turn back to the community.

Luckily, he had cleaned up the zombies on the way before, so even though he was driving slowly, he didn’t encounter any obstacles. He soon arrived at the outside of the residential area and parked his truck under his home building under his command.

Switching off the engine and taking off the keys, the truck was parked securely on the ground floor. Li Ming dashed straight up to the fifth floor.

Upon reaching the door, he intended to enter directly, but suddenly heard some noises. He was all ears, a wrinkle crossing his brows. After some thought, he didn’t rush to open the door, but instead slowly placed his ear against it.

The summer room was extremely stuffy. Faint sounds of a man and a woman arguing could be heard from the firmly shut door.

“Zhang Yuan, don’t you understand that we’re husband and wife? I am your husband and you are my wife! Now that he’s in danger and wants to bail, you’re actually planning to run off with him? Aren’t you afraid he’d get killed out there, and lead to your death too?”

Peng Zhi looked at his wife, who was sweating heavily from moving stuff for Li Ming. His face turned pale, “He gave us so much food, enough to last ten more days. It’s been half a month since the apocalypse began, you don’t think we could wait for a rescue?”

“Why are you following him so faithfully? Do you have any idea of the dangerous vibration? Do you know how scary it is?”

“Even though we met through blind dates, we’ve been married for two years. I gave a dowry of 180,000 yuan. He only gave some food, how can he compare to me? You should stay with me, right?”

Peng Zhi was staring hard at the woman in front of him, his voice trembling with the excitement.

When the earthquake started, it wasn’t just Li Ming who was scared and worried, but him as well.

He was still asleep when the sudden vibrations and the horrifying roars of the undead scared him out of his wits. Waves of fear uncontrollably seeped into his mind. By the time he came to his senses, he saw his wife helping Li Ming pack, perspiring heavily but still persisting.

It was only on asking that he found out his wife wanted to go away with Li Ming, to leave this place!

The very thought of his wife leaving, and him being left alone to face all this, filled him with an indefinable dread. Therefore, Peng Zhi decided, he must win his wife back!

What Peng Zhi said sounded reasonable, but would it make any difference anymore?

“Huh, keep dreaming. Don’t you know that we haven’t been rescued for over half a month? So, you think another ten days of waiting would bring the rescue? As for the danger, do you have any idea how many zombies had my husband killed every time he went out? The tip of his gun was covered with dirty blood, he sweated more than the water you drink.”

“Do you assume my husband is as feeble as you who can’t even lift a bucket of water and all you do is shivering at home lying on the bed doing nothing? You don’t even have the guts to step outside; you’re just like a good-for-nothing, daydreaming all the time. You don’t know how strong he is.”

By then, Zhang Yuan’s fair ear lobes started to turn a little red. Undoubtedly, she was well aware of Li Ming’s strength, her tone unwavering.

“I am your husband! I told you before, I am your husband, we have a marriage certificate, we had a wedding, we took wedding photos, I gave you a dowry, you told me that you loved me, I love you too!”

His wife was calling another man her husband in his face; Peng Zhi couldn’t take it anymore, so he yelled loudly as if trying to turn the tide of the argument.

“Huh, then why don’t you return all the food to my dear husband? Would you like me to ask him to go outside and get a bundle of banknotes to throw in your face? Then he could carry me away from your bed again.”

Zhang Yuan scoffed, staring at Peng Zhi and teasing him.

“You! The food I have is what Li Ming gave me on my own. Why should I return it!”

Peng Zhi gritted his teeth, his tone firm.

“Oh, on what merit did you get it, ha! Through my husband’s pity on you huh? If not for my husband taking care of my feelings, you wouldn’t even get a single grain of rice.”

Zhang Yuan was amused, she shifted her position and said coldly looking at Peng Zhi.

“You… Alright, even if we don’t consider the money now, we still have feelings. We shared a bed for two years, feelings developed over time. Don’t you have any feelings for me?”

Peng Zhi’s expression changed and he snorted, speaking through gritted teeth.

“You’re really spineless. You swap your woman for food, and now you want your woman back. You don’t even dare to ask for a refund. I was blind to marry you because of what a matchmaker said.”

Zhang Yuan was amused, then she looked at Peng Zhi and chuckled, suddenly speaking in a soft voice:

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder, you’re right about that,” she said.

“But how can you compare him to that!”

Zhang Yuan’s voice was gentle, feeling somewhat embarrassed to say these things. As she spoke, it’s as if she was recalling a particular instance, her cheeks flushing from ear to earlobe.

Peng Zhi, in front of her, was bewildered by his wife’s incessant chatter.

Each sentence was like a hammer pounding into Peng Zhi’s mind. He usually refrained from such indulgences!

No, absolutely not, she never used to complain, she must be under some spell right now.

No, I must reclaim my dignity!

Peng Zhi’s breathing became faster, heavier, his eyes were fixed ahead on his slender, stunning wife.

The same wife that he had spent hundreds of thousands to marry.

“Zhang Yuan, you-!”

Peng Zhi stiffened, his face a startling picture of loathing, his cheeks and neck flush with blood.

Zhang Yuan, witnessing his state, knitted her brows, her heart grew cold. Damn it, she thought, Li Ming isn’t here, and she’d agitated him too much.

Just as she contemplated what to do, there came a dull sound from the door.

“Thud…”

Li Ming flung the door open, it slammed into the wall with a thunderous noise. A startled Zhang Yuan and an infuriated Peng Zhi instinctively turned their gaze in his direction.

Li Ming, gun in hand, calmly walked over to Peng Zhi, gazing into his eyes, “What were you about to say?”

“Huff, huff…”

Peng Zhi, looking at the stern-faced Li Ming, took deep, uneven breaths, gritting his teeth, he replied, “I said…be careful out there.”

After he finished speaking, Peng Zhi managed to conjure up a smile, too scared to gaze at Li Ming’s muscular figure, or his gun stained with dried blood. He quickly turned and hurried back into his room.

“Thud…”

After closing the door, Peng Zhi slumped to the ground, panting and recalling the terrifying image of Li Ming, he breathes a sigh of relief.

“Thank goodness, he didn’t attack…”

Outside the door.

Watching as the previously furious and panting Peng Zhi hastily retreat after just a few words, Li Ming couldn’t help but chuckle softly, “This guy does have some comic potential.”

“That’s because he’s spineless, shouting at me, a woman! He wouldn’t dare say a thing when you’re there.”

Zhang Yuan was equally speechless, but visibly relieved. She went to Li Ming’s side, wrapping her long legs in tight blue jeans around his waist, wiping his sweat. “Thank you for coming, he might have pulled off something reckless. He completely scared me.”

“Don’t worry, he won’t have a chance to do so in the future.”

Li Ming patted Zhang Yuan’s butt, squeezing it a little, and laughed.

“Mm, from now on, I’ll be with you, listening to you every day. Sticking close to you, staying as far away from him as possible, so he won’t have a chance.”

Zhang Yuan pouted, responding. After Li Ming lightly pecked her, she managed to calm herself.

She was irritated with Peng Zhi’s nonsensical babbling, every bit of her disgusted with him. It was only after being comforted by Li Ming that she could finally let out a breath of relief.

At this moment, she caught the gleam in Li Ming’s eyes.

He wants to…
