Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 92: Thunderstrike
Chapter 92: Thunderstrike
After a few hours, they woke up feeling refreshed. The first thing Elena did was check the situation outside. The howling wind had intensified, and heavy rain continued to pour down, accompanied by the roar of thunder.
She noticed that the water level had begun to rise in some low-lying areas and realized that the building lobby would likely be flooded within a few hours if the rain continued to worsen.
She then checked her watch and saw that it was still late afternoon, but the gloomy sky made it feel like evening. The electricity was still working, and her phone signal had been restored.
She wondered if the government had issued any announcements regarding the situation. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
She then checked her phone messages and found a text, not from the government, but from the military, warning citizens to stock up on essential food supplies as the typhoon was expected to be severe.
Additionally, everyone was advised to stay in their homes or evacuate to higher ground.
"The military sent a warning message to everyone," Elena said, handing her phone to her husband so he could read it.
"They probably believe this typhoon poses a serious threat. I just wonder if people will listen or if this warning comes too late for them to take action."
Elena was deep in thought. In her past life, even when the government urged people to hoard food supplies, many still chose to ignore the warnings.
’If they won’t listen, that’s their choice. As long as they don’t end up regretting it.’
Afterward, they reviewed the modifications and confirmed that the waterproofing measures—such as a waterproof membrane, sealant around the edges, and drainage mats—had been effectively applied to the balcony.
They also ensured that the seals were reinforced, the drainage systems were clear, and loose items were secured to prevent water damage and leaks.
After confirming that proper waterproofing had been effectively completed, they next verified if the unit was equipped with adequate insulation for extreme weather and had electric heating and cooling systems for effective temperature control, regardless of external conditions.
’It was working well; the temperature was maintained according to our preferences,’ Elena thought.
In addition, a backup power system had been set up to ensure continuous operation even without electricity.
Well, her space was equipped with numerous solar panels that harnessed energy, so electricity was not a problem for them.
Then, they also checked to ensure that pest-proofing measures had been properly implemented to prevent any insects from entering the unit.
They decided to close off the comfort room for good and would only use the space or cat litter if absolutely necessary. The only open fixture was the kitchen sink, as Elena was planning to cook food during this disaster.
After checking the unit, they reviewed the CCTV footage on a tablet that they had secretly installed on the lower floors. There, they saw people loitering around the stairs.
"So, we have a vision on the 15th and 20th floor?"
"Hmpp, Xander installed it covertly for extra protection."
"Well done."
In her past life, when food became scarce, the people around her became sinister and calculating. It’s better to know your enemy so you’re prepared when times get tough.
"With this kind of setup, I believe many would beg to live in this unit," Elena said, admiring the extensive modifications.
"I agree. Let’s go to Grandpa Caldwell and check on them," Ethan replied.
"Okay, wait a moment while I get dressed."
Ethan waited while watching the raging storm outside. Afterward, they left and knocked on unit 3002.
Butler Aki opened the door and gestured for them to enter.
"Butler Aki, how are you?" Elena asked.
"I’m doing fine, mistress," Butler Aki replied. "Aside from the loud noise of the rain and thunder that prevented us from sleeping peacefully, everything is great here. I’m just afraid that the rain won’t stop and may cause flooding."
"I suggest you get used to it, Butler Aki; this rain will not stop anytime soon. Have you received the text from the military?" Elena asked.
Butler Aki acknowledged Elena’s comment and asked curiously.
"Is the signal available now?"
"Yes, just a while ago," Elena confirmed.
"Then, I will excuse myself, mistress. I will check the news on social media," Butler Aki said excitedly, as he was a fan of browsing the internet for news and updates.
For the past few days, when the connection was unavailable, the only source of information he had was the radio. Now that the connection is back online, he is eager to check the news.
Elena nodded. They then entered and looked for Grandpa Caldwell but found the lively little Mia sitting in the living room, watching her favorite princess cartoon on the tablet, a stark contrast to her earlier crying moments in the RV.
Upon seeing her Sis Ele, Little Mia quickly ran over happily. Elena was confused, so she asked, "Little Mia, are you not afraid anymore?"
"I’m still afraid, Sis Ewe," Little Mia replied, "but Mom told me I have to be bwave, or else the thunder will eat me. I have to fight back," she added, clenching her fist proudly."
Elena laughed at Little Mia’s cute expression.
"I’m happy for your bravery! By the way, where is Grandfather?"
"Gwandpa is sleeping in bed," Little Mia replied
But before she could ask Little Mia why she was here alone, the bedroom door opened, and Grandpa Caldwell walked into the room.
"Ethan, Elena, you’re here! Have you already eaten?" he asked.
Seeing that Grandpa Caldwell was beaming with energy, they breathed a sigh of relief.
"We’re about to eat, Grandpa. Let’s have dinner together so we can finally introduce each other officially."
"Okay, then let’s call them."
"Well, you can wait here, Grandpa; we’ll go downstairs since we want to visit Ramon as well," Ethan said.
Grandpa nodded. They were about to go out when a loud thunder roared, followed by a flash of lightning striking a nearby area.
BOOM!
Stunned, they immediately looked out the windows to see what had happened. There, they saw smoke rising from a building in the distance. Ethan grabbed his telescope to get a better look and saw the burned part of the structure.
"This..." Grandpa Caldwell said, feeling uneasy.
No matter how prepared they were, they would still be powerless against nature’s fury.
"A lightning struck one of the buildings in the distance, causing damage to the part of it," Ethan informed them while scanning the area.
Little Mia was overwhelmed by the sudden thunder, but this time, she didn’t cry; instead, she hugged her sis Ele tightly.
"Good girl, don’t be afraid," Elena said, gently patting Little Mia on the back.
Afterward, a knock was heard at the door. Butler Aki quickly opened it to find Oslo and Xander, along with his siblings. He gestured for them to enter.
"Chief, I think I saw lightning strike a building," Oslo said.
"Hmph, you’re right. It did strike a building," Ethan replied, handing them the telescope so they could see clearly.
While the adults were busy discussing the disaster that had just occurred, little Mia noticed a boy who was looking at her with curiosity.
In the past few days, she hadn’t seen anyone her age except for little Lucy, who was still sleeping soundly in Paradise Hospital.
She quickly slipped out of Elena’s embrace and went to greet Angela and little Koby.
"Hewwo," little Mia said.
Little Koby was shy and hid behind his sister, so Angela replied for him.
"Hi! You’re so cute. What’s your name?" Angela asked, holding little Mia’s hands.
"I’m Little Mia. What about you?" Little Mia responded excitedly.
"I’m Angela, and this is my brother, Koby." Angela smiled and then looked at her brother disapprovingly.
"Stop hiding behind me. Can’t you see Little Mia is talking to us?"
"Hello, I’m Koby. Let’s be friends," little Koby said, holding his toy gun.
"Yay, okay! Come on; I’ll show you my pwincess doll," Little Mia said, beaming with joy at having new friends.
Seeing the children getting along, Elena couldn’t help but smile. She then told them to play on the sofa before joining the adults’ discussion.
"Chief, do you mean this rain won’t stop?" Oslo asked.
"It will, but it will take a long time. We must remain vigilant, as this disaster may strike when we least expect it. Got it?"
"Yes, Chief."
But before they could finish their conversation, a lightning bolt struck another building in the distance again.
BOOM!
The kids quickly ran toward the adults, seeking comfort.
Elena was shocked by the sudden event. She looked through the telescope and saw that the building was on fire amidst the raging storm. Thankfully, the heavy rain quickly extinguished the flames.
’I can’t seem to recall there being a thunderstrike at the beginning of a natural disaster. As far I remember, it was rain and fog,’ Elena thought, wondering if the events had changed.
She felt uneasy that the future she knew was changing in a bad direction.
