Chapter 28: Enjoying your company (1)

Since the visit to see his parents was short, Xavier tried to collect a few things Selene might need since she only had a trunk full of what she thought she would need. When his presence was noticed a small crowd gathered to make conversation with him, Xavier left and ended up at his friend’s house.

"Isaac," Xavier greeted the man out of the blue.

"Fucking hell," Isaac cursed, his hand slipping to ruin the art he was close to finishing. "Of course it is you. It is always you who shows up unannounced in my home like you own it. Haven’t you heard of knocking?"

"I thought I was always welcomed here. I have allowed you to enter my estate when you like. This is a good bottle of wine carefully mixed with blood. Is there something to celebrate?" Xavier asked, picking up the unopened bottle.

Isaac gave up on his art and took the bottle from Xavier’s hands. "Yes. You said you were going into a deep slumber so I thought I should celebrate with this. Why are you still awake? Came to say goodbye for some strange reason?"

"I am not going to sleep anymore-" freewēbnoveℓ.com

"Why the hell not?" Isaac asked, his plans suddenly ruined. He coughed to clear his throat after the look he received from Xavier. "Well, you are bored of the town. I’d hate for you to stay bored. Sleeping will be good."

"I will be getting married in a few days and while the wedding will be small, it would be good to have at least one guest. That guest is you. It will be hard but please, find a way to make yourself presentable," said Xavier.

Isaac had enough of Xavier commenting on his appearance. "Nothing is wrong with the way I look."

"My eyes are better than your eyes," Xavier replied, seeing himself as kind to let Isaac know of how he looked.

"This is why I hate your visits. I would rather you lie to me sometimes. These are the clothes I wear when I paint. Three hours to do that painting and it is ruined in a second you arrive yet you don’t see why I don’t like your visits," Isaac said, knowing Xavier did it on purpose.

Why did he have to be the one Xavier always bothered?

"I feel my life loses a year whenever you come around. I will say that your jokes are getting a little better. I almost laughed when you said you were getting married," said Isaac, chuckling now that he thought about it.

"Why would I make a joke about getting married? I will send you an invitation but I thought to tell you in person as well. You should feel special," Xavier said since he wouldn’t do this for anyone else.

Isaac didn’t believe Xavier. "You are getting married? To a woman?"

"Who else would I get married to if not a woman? I am in somewhat of a foul mood already so I advise you not to say anything else that is foolish. Is this the newest attack?" Xavier questioned, inspecting a board Isaac had in the room.

"You are getting married? Who has convinced you to get married? It’s certainly not your mother or father. Tell me, who is it that wields some kind of magic?" Isaac asked, wanting to be friends with that person.

Maybe they could use their skill to make Xavier stop coming around him.

"It is not important who I am getting married to. You will know when I send the invitation. This was done by humans?" Xavier asked, more interested in the case Isaac was working on. "The court is a bit slow in putting an end to this."

"It is not simple. The attacks are slowly starting to grow. Vampires attack humans who do not sell their blood and humans go after vampires who have not hurt anyone. The king should take your advice to punish the vampires taking blood from those who do not sell. The humans wouldn’t sit quietly forever," Isaac said, knowing a big problem was brewing.

"He still thinks we are untouchable. They have killed some of our kind before. The mixed-bloods will be uneasy since they take longer to heal. This could be dealt with now but the man we’ve placed to act as king is a fool. Suggest that all the families gather," Xavier advised Isaac.

"That has been done already. The king isn’t so thrilled about it and the court must act with the king. I am one of the few placed to put an end to this and it is not as simple as the king sees it. There are ways to kill us and if this gets more out of hand, humans will be bold," said Isaac.

"I would love for them to go right for his head first. I’m sure you will find a way to stop this. I am counting on you," Xavier patted Isaac’s shoulder.

"You will not help me?" Isaac asked, seeing Xavier as the person to fix this. "You can speak to the king or gather the other families to have a vote."

"Why would I get involved? The court is around to deal with these matters and the king should know what’s best for the kingdom. I am not in the court nor am I the king. I have a married life to focus on. Are you asking that I abandon my wife to do your work so early on in our marriage?" Xavier questioned, finding amusement in Isaac’s facial expression.

"If this becomes something bigger than it is now, you will be affected by it. Your wife will be affected by it. You should help us now," said Isaac.

"If it comes to war again, all I need to do is protect my wife and mother. If I must step in then it means there are too many fools in the palace. I know the king is a fool. Is the court filled with fools Isaac?" Xavier asked.

"It is not," Isaac sighed. "I should have known better than to think you would help us. It would be wrong to take a man about to get married from his wife. That is if you are getting married. I will be there," he decided. "I want to see if this wedding is true or if it is an excuse to get out of going to the palace."

"I don’t need an excuse to stay away from the palace. I simply do not go. You have little experience when it comes to women but I need your help. What else will they need aside from the obvious things like dresses or shoes?" Xavier asked, hoping to not miss anything.

"I do have experience with women, you bastard. If this woman exists, why don’t you ask her what she needs or wants? Get out," Isaac shooed Xavier away. "You shouldn’t be away from her long. What if she misses you?"

"She hasn’t yet. I told her to send a servant if she does but I have not seen one come to me. Still, I should get back to her. You are useful after all," Xavier said, glad he made the right choice with Isaac. "Do not bother yourself to find us a gift since your taste does not match mine. I will come again soon."

"Don’t," Isaac muttered but Xavier vanished into thin air too fast to hear it. "That poor woman."

Still, Isaac preferred there was someone else for Xavier to bother.
