Chapter 33: Unwelcomed guests (1)
Xavier parted from Selene and went outside to where all the noise came from. He allowed them to comment on his engagement but right now, he didn’t want to hear more about it from them. freёwebnoѵel.com
Xavier took his time walking to the gates which further enraged his father. "Who raised the two of you? Acting like fools outside someone’s gates. I’m a little embarrassed."
"Xavier, it is outrageous that you refused to let us in. We came here to speak about this wedding you have suddenly thrown upon us. I didn’t come here to fight," said Josephinem speaking for herself.
She was honest that she wasn’t here to fight but Josephine couldn’t say the same for Nathaniel.
"You," Nathaniel stepped forward to speak. "Tell your guards to stand down. Have you forgotten who you inherited everything from? Just as I gave it to you, I can take it away."
"As I remember, it wasn’t only your decision that I become lord of this land but if you want to take away the tiring work that I must sometimes do then go ahead. Try to get it from me," Xavier urged his father.
Once again, Josephine tried to be the voice of reason. "Do not fight. I did not come here to see you two fight. I only want to talk, Xavier. I will support this marriage-"
"Josephine," Nathaniel spoke over his wife.
"Do not interrupt me," Josephine said, greatly annoyed by his behaviour. She wanted to come alone to avoid this. Had she come alone, she could have settled what happened today. "We cannot be so quick to judge without seeing Selene first. She was never terrible as a little girl so I hope she has remained the same way."
Xavier had found himself a pureblood woman to marry which was the most important here but Selene’s family background was a flaw.
"I am willing to overlook what her parents did. We cannot fault her for that," said Josephine.
"Have you gone mad woman?" Nathaniel questioned, angry that Josephine had given in so easily. "This isn’t acceptable."
"What isn’t acceptable is having to watch my husband fight guards as he attempts to intrude on my son’s estate. I told you not to come here with me but you forced yourself into the carriage. After what we have created out here, it might be best for me to come again to see Selene. Would you allow me to visit tomorrow? If I come alone?" Josephine quickly added to sway Xavier. "I will try."
"If you come alone, I will consider it. We are planning a small private wedding so I would like neither of you upset her. Next time, I will tell my guards to kill you," Xavier said, looking directly at his father as he spoke.
"This isn’t how you should speak to your father. I don’t know what has gotten into your mother at the moment but I stand on the fact you cannot marry that woman. I’ve called upon the other relatives for us to gather-"
"You and all the others can gather to go to hell," Xavier interjected. "Would you like to borrow one of my carriages to get there?"
"You," Nathaniel started to draw closer to Xavier but the sight of the guards showing up stopped him. "I have only ever asked that you marry a woman from the other families to strengthen our bloodline. Your marriage to this woman will create tension between us and everyone else."
"Her name is Selene. Address her properly since she will be my wife in a few days. Mother is not from one of the other families. If strengthening our bloodline was so important, why didn’t you do it when you had the chance? No offense mother," said Xavier.
Why did he have to be the one bothered when his father skipped marrying one of those women?
Nathaniel didn’t see the need to answer Xavier. His marriage was already done so it was time for Xavier to pick right. "Send that woman away before it gets out. It is fine for you to have your little fun but not to marry her."
"If you refer to her as this or that woman, my mother might become a widow tonight. Call whoever you wish but Selene will be my wife. Just as you do what you must to protect your wife, I will protect mine. I do not care for you to go out of my way to marry Selene simply to upset you. I am marrying her because I want to," Xavier said.
Hearing this, Josephine wished to see the pair even more. She had brought up marriage time and time again but Xavier dismissed it. Now he spoke so much about getting married to Selene.
Josephine tried to think back to the times Xavier and Selene were around each other when they were younger. Were there signs she missed that the pair had once liked each other? Josephine needed to learn more about how Selene came to live with Xavier during the time she was leaving Gabriel.
Nathaniel shook his head. Xavier was a fool and never saw it. This marriage was going to bring trouble and when it did, Nathaniel would not help. Xavier needed to be left alone sometimes when he failed to have him see that he needed his family.
"I know that look. If you are planning to either stop my wedding or do something to my bride, I advise you to find something better to do with your time. Now, if you would excuse me. I have a woman waiting for me inside. Harold,’ Xavier called to the butler. "See them off for me."
"Are you happy now?" Josephine questioned her husband. "I travelled all this way only for you to ruin my plans. I am leaving," she said, heading back to the carriage.
How were they to get a better understanding of Xavier’s engagement if Nathaniel blew up before they got inside to see Selene?
Josephine walked back to the carriage and got in without Nathaniel’s help.
Before leaving with Josephine, Nathaniel looked at the butler. He was one of the servants loyal to the Blackthorns. "Keep an eye on that woman. Her intentions might not be as they seem."
"I’m sorry. I serve Lord Xavier Blackthorn. I do not take orders from anyone else. Please leave before the guards rise to attack you. Please be safe on your travels,’ Harold said, doing only as Xavier ordered him to do.
Nathaniel’s dislike of this servant grew. "Your family has been loyal to mine for decades. You are to do as I say."
"My brother serves your home while I serve Lord Blackthorn. I am most loyal to Xavier Blackthorn. You should be on your way," Harold said, ignoring the usual lecture for not serving Nathaniel. His loyalty to Xavier could not be paid to be broken.
Nathaniel gritted his teeth, his fangs almost piercing his tongue. He angrily turned away to go back to his carriage. He was going to make it inside the estate whether Xavier welcomed him or not. There was plenty of time to end whatever Selene and Xavier thought was between them.
When Nathaniel entered the carriage, it wasn’t a surprise that Josephine didn’t look his way.
"I am curious about your answer to what Xavier said. If it is so important to strengthen your bloodline, what have you thought about me and our marriage?" Josephine asked. She wasn’t what Nathaniel wanted for Xavier.
"Not now with this woman," Nathaniel sighed.
Josephine faced Nathaniel. "Unless you want me to claw out your eyes, now is the time to speak on it."
