Chapter 20: 018 Who is scheming against people’s hearts?
Because the CEO had the shrimp fried rice, it suddenly became a sensation, and everyone wanted to try the CEO’s taste, so much so that the other delicacies in the restaurant were almost completely ignored.
Fortunately, he left as soon as he finished the fried rice without lingering or saying anything more.
However, a whispered comment from the CEO to the restaurant server undoubtedly made her the center of attention, and she figured that no men would dare to flirt with her anymore. This man, upon appearing, had slashed all her potential suitors away, leaving her no chance to chat with the department heads or gain any information.
The work hours were somewhat long but relatively easy, and she received a call from Ethan Baird after work.
"Sweetheart, guess where I am?" The man on the phone sounded cheerful. In fact, Ethan Baird was rarely unhappy in front of her.
"You’re back?" She could guess it because their sudden marriage had greatly affected both of them. Some plans had been indefinitely postponed and restarting seemed quite daunting.
"Nothing can be hidden from you. Can we meet? Surely you can still go out even after getting married?" Ethan Baird was partly concerned about whether Charlotte Miller marrying into the Hallow Family would be dangerous, and partly because he missed her. After more than two years together, they had become like extensions of each other, so her absence was something Ethan Baird found hard to adjust to.
"Not entirely, but I’ll give it a try..." She needed her own social circle. Just because she married into the Hallow Family didn’t mean she sold herself to them. Would Atlas Hallow care about such a thing? It was just a normal meeting between friends, but thinking of having to mention it to Atlas Hallow made her somewhat timid.
It was almost time to leave work and just as she changed and picked up the phone to call Atlas Hallow, he called her first.
"Have you changed clothes?" His deep and pleasant voice came from the other end, making Charlotte Miller instinctively bite her lip and respond softly, "Yeah..."
Their breaths pulsed through the airwaves...
"Is something up?" Charlotte Miller wondered if he would get off work on time, given that a man like him would often work overtime, right?
"I have to work late, you go home first." Atlas Hallow looked out the window with deep eyes. The autumn wind rolled the clouds, casting a golden hue on the streets below. People came and went, cars flowed like water, everything was gilded with gold but none of it reached into his heart.
Today, he had nothing; it was she who likely had something.
"Can I go shopping? I didn’t bring much clothing when I returned." This excuse was the best. She returned with only three outfits, so after meeting Ethan Baird she could buy a couple of outfits as well. Her speed at buying clothes matched her speed at changing them, and she could buy a set in a few minutes if money wasn’t a concern.
"Come upstairs first." Atlas Hallow’s eyes twinkled, breaking the previous gloom and darkness. He spoke softly with slightly parted lips.
"Alright." Charlotte Miller was a bit baffled why he wanted her to go up to the CEO’s office. Was he asking her to accompany him while he worked overtime?
The scent of coffee permeated the office, making Daniel Parker a bit curious. Atlas Hallow was ready to leave, yet stayed behind; did he need to work overtime?
Charlotte Miller took a deep breath in front of his office and told herself, this is your husband, not a monster, he won’t eat you, what’s there to fear? Just go in...
Standing outside, she made a cheering gesture to herself and as she was about to enter, the door opened. She was still holding her fist up when she saw Atlas Hallow sitting upright with a mischievous smile at the corner of his lips.
"Am I that scary that you need this to meet me?" Atlas Hallow couldn’t help but find it amusing watching Charlotte Miller enter. He stood up, took her hand, and led her to sit on the sofa, brushing his fingers gently across her face, a face he found himself quite enamored with, its texture indescribably appealing.
"Do you need me to accompany you shopping?" He wanted to test if she truly intended to go shopping today because her tone on the phone just now was a bit different, her breathing faster than usual, indicating that what she was about to do made her nervous.
"No need, shopping with a woman is too boring." It seemed inappropriate for Atlas Hallow, a man who could shake the business world, to spend time shopping with a woman.
Watching Atlas Hallow remain silent, feeling the subtle sting and numbness as his fingers brushed her face, his presence enveloped her like a surging tide. Charlotte Miller unconsciously bit her lip, "Am I too modest?" It felt as if a woman refusing her husband to shop with her was rather ungracious.
"Let’s let you be modest today, take this, buy whatever you like." He pulled out a black wallet, void of any logos, simply designed, containing cash and several neatly arranged cards. He took out one of them and handed it to Charlotte Miller. The black card made a striking visual contrast against her fair hand.
Luna Miller had said that over ninety-nine percent of men’s wallets might contain a condom, perhaps even two, but Atlas Hallow clearly wasn’t among that ninety-nine percent.
Charlotte Miller accepted the card. Refusing it would certainly displease Atlas Hallow, and she wanted to avoid any conflicts, so why provoke unhappiness over a little money? It was just for buying a couple of outfits, after all.
"Then I’ll go first." She was a bit anxious. Ethan Baird was rather impatient; if she didn’t reply soon, he might call again. If he did so in front of Atlas Hallow, should she answer or not? Better to leave quickly, just to be safe.
"In such a hurry?" Just as she was about to stand up, she found herself caught by a powerful force, falling into a warm and firm embrace, overwhelmed by a storm of masculine energy...
