Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game-Chapter 42 - 040 Heartache and Reluctance
Chapter 42: 040 Heartache and Reluctance
Daniel Parker held a stack of important documents, having worked on them all morning to get them ready.
With one hand holding the documents, he directly pushed open the door to Atlas Hallow’s office.
As his assistant over the years, he seemed to have gotten used to entering without knocking.
But today, he overlooked a key detail: this executive office area was no longer occupied by just him and Atlas Hallow.
There was an additional person on this floor, and her status was rather special—she was the boss’s woman.
Upon opening the door, he was confronted with this image, his entire mind feeling like it exploded.
The beautiful and enticing lady boss was sitting on the boss’s lap, intimately intertwined as if they were conjoined twins.
Charlotte Miller was even more startled than Daniel, nearly seduced by this man in the office, quickly jumping off Atlas Hallow’s lap, blushing as she hurriedly left the room, her footsteps swift as if being chased.
Looking at the boss’s expression, Daniel knew naturally it wouldn’t be pleasant.
"This can’t be blamed on me; you should have locked the door," he shrugged, not at fault for this incident at all. He was permitted to enter Atlas Hallow’s office without knocking if necessary during work hours; at least lock the door when dealing with personal matters.
And was it that needy?
In his impression, Atlas Hallow shouldn’t be the type to do this.
As the young women in the company said, their president is a perfect ascetic male deity, always radiating an unattainable aura, yet just moments ago he distinctly saw the boss’s eyes that looked like they were about to devour the woman sitting on his lap, almost shooting sparks from his pupils.
This so-called mature and restrained ascetic man might actually be a ravenous Beast, unseen to everyone else but only the boss knows what he truly desires.
"Has the task been completed?" Atlas Hallow asked coldly, his voice soaring in the air, a stark contrast to his almost fiery demeanor just moments ago.
"Yes," Daniel responded, joking aside, his work was unaffected, handing over the stack of documents in his hand to Atlas Hallow.
Returning to her office, Charlotte Miller’s heart was still racing, never experiencing such a feeling despite handling large sums before.
She poured a cup of water and took big gulps, almost burning her tongue in haste—damn...
His scent clung to her clothes, akin to a hypnotic fragrance for her. Standing by the window, Charlotte tried to clear her thoughts.
Everything seemed fine initially, but when their relationship took a step further, everything seemed to change suddenly.
How should she interact with him?
As noon approached, her office door was pushed open by him, the tall and handsome man lingered at the frame, crossing his long legs, extending a hand invitingly: "Let’s go down for lunch."
Accompany him downstairs?
Charlotte shook her head; rumors were already rampant if they appeared together in the restaurant, she would certainly solidify her reputation as the one seducing the president, wouldn’t she?
She didn’t want to become the female arch-enemy of the entire Hallow Clan, so maintaining a professional distance in the workplace was necessary, at least not to be overly intimate in public.
Atlas Hallow entered, sitting on the small gray sofa by her office desk, the originally cozy and refined space now felt cramped with his presence.
"Have them send up two lunches," After making the call, he raised his eyes to Charlotte, extending his hand towards her.
The intention of this gesture was clear; he wanted her by his side.
Charlotte walked over, sitting on the sofa, the space seeming a bit cramped, she bit her lip wanting to speak but kept silent.
How nice it would be if she didn’t have to work with him, at least not so awkward.
They were practically strangers, yet their relationship suddenly evolved; despite any intimacy, they still lacked enough mutual time to hone this abrupt relationship, so no matter how delightful the affair, it was merely an act to her, not love’s harmonious blend.
She hoped to work on what she loved with Ethan Baird, but that appeared impossible.
"Actually, I have work I enjoy, and if two people are always together, doesn’t it lose freshness?" Boldly stating, she felt Atlas Hallow seemed in a good mood, worst-case scenario he’d scold a bit, not trying it felt regretful.
"Work you enjoy?" Atlas Hallow-cross legged stretched out, tone calm, seemingly untroubled.
"What you’ll like from now on can only be me; the work you enjoy should serve me, and the time you like needs to be with me. Forget all those random thoughts in your mind; Charlotte, haven’t I been too good to you, making you so audacious?" Moments ago, he was fine, his change was dauntingly rapid.
The voice spoke like oppressive air on the storm’s edge, invisible yet felt as if a storm drove layers of clouds rolling in across the office.
The dangerous aura began spreading, from the soles towards her chest like creeping vines.
Instinctively biting her lip, Charlotte felt sour and somewhat aggrieved and uncomfortable.
They were unequal from the start, wasn’t it her own fault for forgetting boundaries?
Suddenly the air dropped to freezing, Charlotte lowered her head saying no more, whatever he needed she’d do—next time she’d never foolishly try discussing anything with him, naturally pursuing one’s own interests, one day she would do what she loved, but not now.
Daniel Parker felt himself as the most unfortunate assistant, working for Atlas Hallow was never easy. Now his boss had his own woman around supposedly easing his workload, yet it merely increased the workload.
Now there was even ordering meals for two, internally he grumbled in discontent while carrying two elaborate lunch boxes to Atlas Hallow’s office door.
Before entering this time, sensibly knocked, paused a few seconds before pushing in.
Huh, nobody?
Could they be in Charlotte’s office?
Changed venue for more passion? Spurning the spacious office, choosing the small one, clearly Charlotte held enough allure for his boss.
Reaching Charlotte’s office, he dared not enter directly, knocking twice echoed a woman’s soft tender voice inside: "Come in..."
Daniel pushed the door perceiving something amiss.
A smart assistant here leaves the lunch quickly, not lingering this place was unsuitable for stay, catching sight of boss’s eyes slightly squinted dangerously.
"President Hallow, ma’am, enjoy your meal, I’m off to eat too." Despite his hunger, he’d arranged for them first, swiftly left Charlotte’s office, unsuitable for long stay.
"Let’s eat," Charlotte softly uttered, reaching for her lunch box, opening it to pass to Atlas Hallow.
His heart inexplicably clenched seeing her eyes full of grievance and restraint making him ache subtly, oddly reluctant.
Extremely unhappy yet she still invited him for lunch, unlike usual women throwing fits or leaving, she didn’t tear up for sympathy. She was different from them, invoking some crisis feeling in Atlas Hallow.
Though she was his woman, both in name and body, she felt uncapturable.
Steam arose from the opened lunch box; food’s unique aroma spread into the air, Charlotte opened another and ate mouthful by mouthful.
Nourishment fuels work, fortunately Atlas Hallow’s prepared lunch was genuinely appealing, offering her comfort.
Atlas Hallow observed her eating small bites, today’s menu red-braised beef and rice with some neatly arranged side dishes crowding the special food box. She seemed fond of the marinated cucumbers, consuming them before touching the main meal.
He picked up chopsticks, transferring his crisp, enticing marinated cucumbers into her box.
Charlotte froze for a moment, tears falling, her melancholy intensified.
This moody, compulsively controlling man, what on earth did he want?
