Chapter 57: Destiny’s Hand In Action
Dimitri and Lily stayed to watch Lady Kyoka’s condition which was steadily on the mend. Lily was sure they could leave in a day or two. The lady is a tough dragon, stronger than Lily thought possible since the wound she sustained should have killed her. But she was on the mend and Trinee was aware and would keep the dragon moss growing while she was away.
Lily was still having a hard time figuring out why they attacked the temple. It wasn’t an important landmark and it was in a remote location away from the city. There had to be something here they were after if nothing else. She wondered what could be hidden here that would be valuable to the darkling dragons.
Dimitri had also looked through the wreckage, but it seemed like he was looking for something specific. He didn’t say what he was searching for, but Lily had a feeling it had something to do with the massacred village. She had always wondered why Dimitri and his squad were at that village to begin with.
Walking over to him as he stood up wiping the dust from his hands, looking over the damage. "Any thoughts about why they attacked?" Lily was hoping he was willing to talk about whatever he was hiding. "Its not that simple. Only a few people knew what my mother was guarding here." "Guarding?"
Dimitri turned to her sighing as he found the words to tell her about his mother. "Just like you, I have had many secrets to keep and protect, this is one of them. Come with me." He took her hand leading her to part of the tower that hadn’t been destroyed. There on the far side was a door that didn’t look like anything she had ever seen before.
Walking up to it, Dimitri places his hand on the door letting his energy flow into his hand as the door unlocks and then opens slightly. Pulling the door open Dimitri leads her down a long staircase with depictions of dragons on the walls. The door closed on its own behind them as she looked at the images that told a story of two dragons that looked to be flying over mountains and fields similar to what she had seen when flying with Dimitri.
However, the further she went down the stairs the more violent the images became. At some point the people on the ground were firing things into the sky at the dragons. This must have been before the Clans had been formed. The history of each Clan was always bloody, but this seemed so sad. The Dragons didn’t look to be attacking the people, but the people were so many with weapons pointing at them.
What had happened for the people to want to harm their own gods? They reached the bottom turning to the right and going down a long corridor. Dimitri grabbed a torch lighting it with his breath as they neared a large door. Placing his hand on it like the first door, it opened revealing a temple decorated with various gold and blue silks, and lamps lit up as they walked by to the end where a depiction of two dragons.
They looked to be resting on clouds in the sky, one looked like her father’s dragon while she had never seen the magenta before. "While I may not have known your father was a god, I do know that each Clan had two gods, a male and female, to guide their people. And when the time was right a pair of children would be born to them to take over for the old gods."
Lily knew this from her history classes, but there seemed to be more than what was being said. "Yeah, but this seems to be more detailed. What am I missing here?" Dimitri walked to a platform with a stand holding a book turning the pages he gestured for her to walk over. As she got close she could feel a pull towards the book like nothing she had ever felt setting her hands on it.
Suddenly in her mind’s eye, she could see the stories of the past playing out the dragons happy and flourishing protecting their lands. Then one day a huge army attacked wounding the blue dragon causing him to flee. This must have been the moment he met her mother. The wounds he sustained did look similar to the darkling dragon wounds she had seen so far.
Watching the rest was painful because it was from the perspective of the magenta dragon who longed for her other half. She cried out in agonizing pain shocking the army into retreating as the dragon raged at them burning half the army to the ground. Landing after burning the army to the ground the woman, the dragon changed into was none other than Lady Kyoka.
She then retreated to this temple never leaving it setting a barrier around for her protection isolating herself from the world around her. Losing her mate hit her hard until one day she finds the Dragon King wounded in the forest. Lily had heard this story before, but seeing it was something else.
Coming back to reality she stepped back as the book snapped shut looking at her mate. He must have suspected this when her father revealed himself. In a way it was destiny they met and mated each other. Both of them had gone through different hardship and came out a better person for it.
"We were always destined to find each other. Not even Vestis could stop it, and I’m betting he had no idea either." Dimitri released a breath he didn’t know he was holding reaching for his mate and wrapping his arms around her. "I didn’t know how to tell you, but then that went out of my hands when the temple was attacked. And your father came forward or rather your mother told you and you pulled the truth out of him." He was glad she wasn’t mad at him for keeping this secret from her.
"Not that he made it all that hard. From everything that was shown to me, I think I know how the darkling dragons arrived."
