Julia explained, her voice measured, as though every single second spent talking was being counted.

"To keep the world stable, they need us—the cardholders—to maintain the balance, so the negative energy doesn’t become too much to seep into our world... We’re given great luck and power; in return, we have to keep their energy house for them."

Listening to her, Caleb finally had a deeper understanding of what Group X was.

They destroyed people’s dreams, kept them from achieving what they wished to, gathered up the well of negative energy, and stored them.

The cardholders were now left to act as storekeepers.

They had to maintain the balance of the negative energy and positive energy.

The cardholders were simply the pillars to their world.

And with them there, Group X could keep shattering more dreams and destroying more futures.

The air grew heavier the more she explained.

Caleb didn’t seem to care about this as he continued.

"X—they’re coming after you! Make sure you stay away from any mirrored surface... They transport through the mirror," Caleb warned, his voice filled with unusual urgency and fright.

Like one afraid to lose something precious.

Naya felt her heart flutter hearing him.

It was a warning.

But she felt delighted, knowing that he cared about her so much.

She felt so happy.

She shook her head momentarily, quickly dashing into action.

Without warning, she smashed her room window...

Closed the curtains, turned off the lights.

Thankfully, her room was completely coated in white, barely having any other colour.

"Naya!" Caleb yelled from the other end. He heard the sound of glass shattering and immediately thought she had already been attacked.

Fear gripped him.

Naya’s heart jumped with glee as she heard his voice filled with so much care and love.

She wanted to reply, but a cold smile crossed her face.

’Now it’s my turn to play,’ she thought, pressing the phone to her ear without uttering a word.

"Naya! Naya! Are you there?"

She let his voice fill the room, enjoying every moment of it with a smile on her face.

Caleb clenched his fist on the other end.

He had never felt so guilty.

’Was it my fault?’ he couldn’t help but ask himself...

Everything, he had planned it—to get Naya... And in the process, the only thing he could consider good that he had done for her plunged her into even bigger trouble.

He felt guilty for that.

Julia, as well, could feel the depth of anger and guilt in his voice. But she could only watch silently from the side.

"Naya!" he shouted one more time before dropping the phone.
