Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space-Chapter 33. Have a clear understanding of a situation
Chapter 33: 33. Have a clear understanding of a situation
Indeed, it was very beautiful. Each pastry was in the shape of a different flower, very delicate, with colors that varied, and they emitted a faint fragrance. They looked delicious without needing a taste.
In the few memories the little girl had, she had eaten pastries before, but she had no impression of anything as exquisite as this. It seemed like it was made at home, indicating that Luo brother’s family was in better financial shape than she had imagined.
Even Hua Chengtian frowned slightly when he saw the pastries, but it was only for a moment.
Once received, there’s no point in overthinking it.
"Dad... tell Mom to make something delicious to give Luo Song brother when going to school."
Jin’er didn’t miss her father’s look and thought briefly before speaking.
"Alright, as Jin’er said," Hua Chengtian nodded. The pastries were indeed excellent, so it was only right to return the gesture. Let the children’s mother think about it.
"Sit tight," Hua Chengtian flicked the whip and the ox cart started moving.
It wasn’t long before the ox cart reached the street, which was much more crowded than before. Luckily, it wasn’t so packed as to impede their walking, and they quickly arrived at their stall, then drove the ox cart behind it.
When Jin’er got off, Granny Hua and Qi were bargaining with a lady who wanted to buy eggs.
The lady indeed wanted them, and eventually, she bought half of the eggs they brought at the price of two wen per egg.
It was evident that the lady was pleased because each of the eggs was large, and although the price remained the same, they gave her an extra one.
The transaction was quickly completed, and Granny Hua carefully put the money into the pouch. She beamed at her eldest granddaughter, signaled her to sit by patting the bench next to her, and started calling out to customers again.
When selling things, one cannot be thin-skinned. If you don’t speak up or smile, who would want to buy your goods?
... No one wants to pay to suffer.
Jin’er found it quite interesting. As big as she had grown, she had never sold anything before, and she was watching attentively.
Grandmother and mother sold eggs and home-grown vegetables; their friendly expressions and amiable smiles made them very approachable and attractive to people.
With a charming little girl like Jin’er there, she drew even more attention.
It’s rare for a rural family to raise such a fair and delicate-looking child, so those who liked children couldn’t help but take another look. And then, under the warm greetings of Granny Hua and Qi, they would buy some things, more or less, which was a nice surprise.
It wasn’t long before they sold all the eggs and vegetables. Even the tubs and tables they brought were sold, except for two wild rabbits which still garnered no interest.
Jin’er looked at the rabbits in the basket anxiously and turned her gaze to her father.
"Dad, why don’t we take the rabbits to the tavern and see?"
Wild rabbits were meat, so naturally, they were pricey. Although there were many people coming and going on the street, not many were willing to eat game meat.
Compared to wild rabbits, people preferred pork with more fat, which could be rendered for lard and still provide meat to eat.
Jin’er quickly figured this out and couldn’t help but remind her father.
Hua Chengtian wasn’t really worried. After all, they weren’t the only ones selling wild game, and it was still early. Selling slowly was normal, but seeing his daughter’s concerned and adorable expression, he nodded.
Visiting the tavern might indeed be worthwhile; if it doesn’t work out, they could just bring them back. After all, it was just a few more steps.
With her father’s agreement, Jin’er immediately perked up and turned to her grandmother and mother. "Grandma, wait for me a while and don’t go to the embroidery workshop yet. I want to go too. Dad and I will be right back."
Fearing her grandmother and mother might not wait for her, Jin’er quickly said in advance.
"Alright, alright, go ahead, no rush," Granny Hua nodded with a smile at her soft and tender granddaughter.
The day was still young, and there was no hurry to visit the embroidery workshop. Granny Hua certainly wouldn’t refuse her granddaughter’s small request.
Besides, children aren’t known for sitting still in one place.
With this, Jin’er felt at ease. She was still keen on selling the wild rabbits and visiting the embroidery workshop to sell patterns.
"Dad, I want to go too," Little Si, always restless, couldn’t resist when he heard his sister was going to sell the rabbits with Dad. He stood up and grabbed his dad’s free hand.
Hua Chengtian glanced at the increasing crowd and said solemnly, "You can go, but you mustn’t let go of my hand and must hold tightly to your sister. Understand?"
"Sure, Dad," Little Si nodded quickly. He was willing to do anything just to go along.
"Chengtian, keep an eye on the kids," Granny Hua urged, not quite reassured, seeing her son pick up the rabbit basket.
"Got it, Mom."
Holding the two kids, Hua Chengtian called out as they moved into the crowd.
This was Jin’er’s first time walking on a street in ancient times. Though the environment was a bit lacking, and she could potentially step on animal dung if not careful, none of this dampened her enthusiasm for shopping.
Their Hua Village was one of the villages under Shanggu Town, spanning a few dozen li, with Shanggu Town being the only town nearby. The hustle and bustle of market days were evident.
The street was filled with men, women, and children, many tightly holding onto their children’s hands like her.
Seeing numerous women and some young maidens on the street, Jin’er surprisingly felt relieved.
It seemed that the treatment of women in this era was not as strict and harsh as she had imagined. Although young maidens wore hats to prevent unwarranted attention, the women were quite free, and there was no sign of foot-binding.
If asked what Jin’er feared most about coming to ancient times, it was definitely foot-binding.
Luckily, no one she saw had bound feet.
As she walked with her father, Jin’er carefully observed the stalls along the street and the clothing of the people.
Especially the clothing, as it related to her ability to earn money in the future. Walking along, Jin’er already had a sense of things and was even more confident.
Although Jin’er wasn’t clear on what period the Ancient Yan Country she was in belonged to, she could tell some things from the clothing. It seemed more akin to the period around the Tang Dynasty, but culinary practices were clearly richer than that era. Jin’er even saw vendors selling chili on the street, which was an unexpected surprise.
There had been no chili at home, making Jin’er, who loved spicy food, mistakenly think there was none here.
If she had money, she would have bought it without hesitation.
Jin’er’s gaze was nearly all on everyone’s clothing.
Perhaps because they had to work the fields in the countryside, they dressed for comfort, making the styles quite uniform.
But in the town, the days seemed visibly better from the clothing, which was more varied and colorful, especially the unmarried girls wearing ru skirts. The skirts swayed in the wind, looking very beautiful.
"Jin’er, once Dad sells these rabbits, I’ll buy you some pretty clothes." Watching his daughter frequently eye the skirts on the little girls, Hua Chengtian calculated whether the money from selling the rabbits would be enough.
Jin’er, realizing her father had misunderstood, quickly shook her head. "Dad, I have clothes to wear, no need."
"Don’t worry about the money, Dad can afford it."
Understanding that his daughter was concerned about the cost, Hua Chengtian was even more eager to provide better for such a considerate child.
"I’m truly not worried, Dad. I’m wearing the new clothes Mom just made. There’s really no need to buy more." Jin’er pulled at her knee-length skirt.
Which little girl in the village has more than a couple of new clothes a year like her? This dress was made not long after she woke up.
A soft yellow, making her one of the few girls in the village with a brightly colored dress.
