Extra's Path To Demon King-Chapter 42: The One’s Behind
Chapter 42: The One’s Behind
It’s been one month since he first visited the chambers of Detective Malric. Within the first week, he had killed everyone in Jerome’s gang while getting all their hidden supplies and money. In the second week, Axel cleared out all 5 gangs in Delmar City.
In the third week, He cleared out many bandit groups that operated on the periphery of the city, who robbed unprotected wagons. In the infrastructure of human society, there was corruption at every single corner, which exploited the weak ones who were at the bottom of the barrel.
He wasn’t too surprised by it, it was common even in his old world. Even back on Earth, where only people ruled other people, corruption was overflowing underneath, even in the most powerful countries. Let alone this world, where individuals who were powerful enough to make a nuclear bomb look like a joke lived.
Such a society was even prone to corruption, since the voice of the general public did not matter. Only the whims of the powerful were the law. But Axel himself didn’t have anything against it. His life as Ashborn did not make him generate hate in this world or society.
Even though this world was likely fake, it was a projection of truth. Perhaps a probability from a different timeline or a different world, he did not know. Since the world was ruled by the powerful ones, it only meant that someone who would keep the good of the general people had to take the throne of power.
One didn’t need to be a saint or forsake their own profit to build a good society, they only needed to keep the thought of stability in their mind. Axel sighed to himself as he thought of what he did on the 4th week.
He was looking for the traces, the traces of the noble who was behind it all. Only the low-ranking nobles could use such methods to gather money or operate underground activities. The high-ranking ones couldn’t be bothered since their wealth surpasses the imagination of the common people.
He finally found the trace of them, it was not just one noble but 2 viscounts and a merchant company together that was in it. But the problem, he couldn’t rob them fully, as it would set off a chain reaction of infuriating those who are behind these nobles. But that would lead to unforeseen circumstances that he won’t be able to handle.
But the detective and he came up with a plan, something that would give him enough money to take the entrance test. Axel decided to blackmail them. The detective had collected all the hard evidence necessary for them to publish it. While the opinion of the general public did not have much power. The noble authorities that ruled the empire still needed to keep their facade up front.
The facade that they always had good of the general public in mind. They could use that information in exchange for not interfering with their operations anymore. And handing over the evidence they gathered against them. They actually hid their tracks quite well, but Malric was truly like a cheap Sherlock Holmes. The guy’s intelligence was off the charts.
Too bad, only knowledge can’t help you become powerful in this world. The detective also knew how he would be used if he joined some organization or became the underling of some noble, and he didn’t like that scenario. The guy liked to be free and do his own things within the dark alleyways of the city.
Axel was currently sitting in the office of the detective, sipping tea calmly. He was wearing neat and fine clothes. He seemed unrecognizable compared to before. He looked like a well-groomed heir of a noble household. Slightly long and styled gray hair, sharp brown pupils.
An incomparably profound confidence surrounded him. Detective Malric looked at him speechlessly. He couldn’t help but say it out loud, "Don’t you think you’ve changed a bit too much compared to a month ago?"
"So, is everything ready?" asked Axel without commenting on what Malric said.
The detective sighed and said, "Yes, everything is ready. I think we can do it tonight."
Axel nodded and stood up, while Malric handed him a file with many documents in it. He walked away, taking that, before leaving, he said one last thing, "Let’s meet in the night."
The old assistant of the detective was standing on the sidelines all this time, and after Axel left did he moved his body a bit and started breathing loudly. The detective shook his head at that sight and stated, "Old man, relax, the boy isn’t as scary as you think."
The old man looked at his boss as if he were looking at a fool, he said, "A 9-year-old brat cleaned up all the junk of the entire city in mere 1 month. And the way he killed them is,,,,,,"
He couldn’t finish as the words got stuck in his throat, but he still continued, "If you still think that the boy is not ’dangerous’, then your intelligence has clearly dropped, boss."
The detective’s mouth twitched, but he couldn’t find words to refute the old man. He sighed and got up. He needed to make some preparations of his own for the operation.
The evidence he gathered against the three was indeed solid, but there’s no telling what they might do after the exchange is over. No matter how well an oath is made between two parties, for intelligent people, there are always loopholes that can be used.
Night arrived, while the bustling city grew quiet. Stores closed one after another. Under a certain mall. Things became louder and louder. It was a gambling den filled with many rich nobles or influential people screaming at their wins or cursing at their losses. While almost naked ladies were sitting on the laps of those rich men or serving food.
Some of the men were directly groping their melons right in the open. While some couldn’t hold their urges as they dragged some women to private chambers to get their deed done. But none of that mattered. In a certain room, 3 old men were sitting on a sofa side by side. But no women were in that room as they were having a serious discussion on some important things.
"So, there is still no information on the party involved?" stated one of them.
"Obviously no," added another person.
"Only a few passengers saw a few things while passing by the area of the last remaining gang. But those wretches say the same thing again and again. That it was a little boy covered in black clothes, responsible for all this," explained the remaining one.
These three were the ones behind the underground activities and the bosses of all the local thugs and their groups. Viscount Frank, Viscount Zeke, and Merchant Han. In just one month, all of their people in charge of various underground activities were killed without exception.
By the time they realized how serious the situation was, it was already too late. The money gathered by their underlings through exploiting all the beggars or commoners was not their concern, but the reason they took control of all the small criminals and made such an underground system was due to a greater reason.
Such channels could actually be used for various politically implicated affairs. Underground deals between official and unofficial organizations. Secret alliances, or creating a hidden force. Countless more services, including money laundering, could be done through these underground channels.
They had to invest a lot of time to have complete control over all the underground activities. But some no-name bastard came and destroyed everything in barely a month. They couldn’t accept it. Nor could they find the ones that did it. Since the other party was leaving no clues behind.
"So, that’s it? And no other plans or anything?" stated Merchant Han angrily.
But the viscount Frank and Zeke did not simply react to the apparent outburst of their companion, they seemed to be used to it.
Eventually, Viscount Zeke said, "I think we can consider the probability that our enemies are actively trying to suppress us, not wanting us to take control of that section of the city."
Viscount Frank added, "That’s possible, but there is something unusual about this whole situation. It doesn’t seem like their style of doing things in any way."
Merchant Han chimed in, "Since this is not going anywhere, we should wait for a while this time and make enough preparations, set an inescapable trap that can’t be escaped."
As they were continuing in their discussion. Someone slowly walked inside the room in calm steps. The figure was covered in black clothes, but what was surprising was the stature of the person.
It was a kid wrapped up in black clothes, only leaving his eyes open through the mask.
It was Axel, obviously in the body of Ash. He sat down on the sofa and continued to listen to their discussions. Simply waiting to be noticed by them calmly.
