FLASH MARRIAGE; CHARMED BY THE RUTHLESS BILLIONAIRE CEO-Chapter 336: Trusted Blindly
Rufus felt helpless and at a loss for words as he watched the senator succumb to his overwhelming emotions. He thought of the right words to say to cheer his boss up without overstepping his boundaries.
"Sir, are we still going to Madam Amelia's house as earlier planned?" Rufus asked calmly, knowing how the mention of the senator's daughter's name always brought warmth to his face.
"Yes..." Senator Gregory replied in a raspy voice. He brought out his handkerchief and wiped his face while clearing his clogged airway.
"Take me to my daughter's house."
"Okay, senator." Rufus signalled the chauffeur to get moving.
A deafening silence hung inside the moving car for a few minutes before the Senator hoarse voice came up again.
"What about that animal?"
"My men dropped him off at the gate to his Fort bungalow, where his wife and children picked him up and took him inside."
Gregory's gaze darkened at the thought of Lilian getting involved with Matt all over again when she swore never to return to him.
"Have you found out the reason behind his wife's return?"
"Not yet senator. I have already deployed men who are currently at the countryside where she and her children have been residing for the past six months plus. I'll let you know once they give me feedback."
"Get more trustworthy men and have them stationed around that bungalow. I need to know everything he does and everyone who visits to the very last detail."
"Yes, Senator." Rufus hesitated a little before notifying the angry senator about Gwen's return, which only intensified his rage.
As if on cue, Gwen call came into the Senator's phone at that same time.
The senator spared one disgusted glance at his phone screen and completely ignored it, hissing. "Bastards. I will deal with every one of you." He swore under his fiery breath.
The phone kept ringing over the next few minutes before it completely stopped. It beeped twice, indicating that the senator had just received a text message.
However, when he saw that the message was also from Gwen, he didn't bother to read it as he deleted it immediately.
When the senator finally arrived at the Anderson's mansion, he was distraught to see Judith's eyes swollen and reddened from excessive crying.
Henry and Judith's husband were seated next to her, trying to console her.
However, the moment she laid eyes on him, she went berserk with rage.
"Judith..."
"Don't you dare mention my name again." Judith abruptly stood up, pointing menacingly at him as if he were Matt.
"I swear I didn't know." Senator Gregory stretched both his hands forward pleadingly.
"Don't give me that stupid excuse," Judith shouted at the top of her voice, ignoring Henry's and Hillary's attempts to calm her down.
"How could you not know? She was your wife for goodness' sake. You should have seen the signs. You should have read her mood. How could you let that dog touch her? How could you have been so gullible all these years?"
Senator Gregory fell on his knees before Judith, ignoring his social status. "I failed, Fiona. I agree that I am a big failure. But I swear, I never knew. I trusted blindly."
"That is the problem," Judith screamed at the top of her voice. "You have always been as blind as a bat and as stubborn as a donkey. In your eyes, your brothers are saints. They can never do wrong. Even when they tried to kill your own daughter, my niece, you still believed them despite the evidences against them. You disappointed my sister. You disappointed your own daughter. And for what, so that your family can remain unified? How is that working for you now?"
"I'm sorry." Senator Gregory's shoulder shook with overwhelming grief as he lowered his head, wishing he could go back in time and correct his wrong.
Henry shook her head, completely disappointed in Amelia's weak father.
Judith returned to her seat, cupping her face and crying her heart out.
"It's okay, sweetheart." Hilary soothed his wife tenderly. "Remember, we came here to encourage Amelia. If she wakes up and finds you like this, she'll be more heartbroken."
"If only Fiona had listened to me, she would still be alive today." Judith's voice trembled as she met her husband's pleading gaze.
"I know." Hilary nodded, wiping her eyes.
"All she did was love that man." Judith pointed accusingly at the senator. "She gave up everything just to be with him against our parents' wish. I always knew she was unhappy after her marriage, but she wouldn't confide in me. She always told me everything was fine, even when I caught her on a few occasions crying herself to sleep."
Judith hiccuped and blew her nose noisily into the handkerchief her husband gave her before continuing.
"I begged Fiona to divorce Greg after he cheated on her with that slut he now calls his wife. But she adamantly refused. Rather than divorcing him, she took in the bastard child under her roof like her own daughter. Now look at how everything turned out. She never lived to see her daughter turn into a woman. Her leukaemia worsened under Greg's watch. If Matt had been able to rape and silent her because she rejected him, how am I sure he didn't also kill her for her wealth?"
Judith's last statement hit the senator like a bullet. He held his chest with both hands, his moist eyes twitching and his mind flashing back to the dark day before Fiona's death.
"Could it be..." Senator Gregory muttered under his breath as he recalled something which he didn't take into account back then. "...no....no....my God...no..."
Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps, followed by muffled discussion, forced everyone to stand up.
Doctor Vanessa, holding her medical bag, came into view. She had a crease on her forehead and a disappointed look in her eyes as she spoke softly to Maria, who was looking equally distressed.
"Doctor, how is my niece?" Judith came forward. "Please tell me she's alright."
