Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 317 - : The Wolf Cub Found on the Road
Chapter 317 -317: The Wolf Cub Found on the Road
“Old Yang, shall we go up and take a look?”
Old Yang glanced at the team members, nodded, and said, “Let’s go, there’s a snow leopard up there, and we need to check it out.”
In this area, there are many more infrared cameras distributed than in the uninhabited area, especially on the mountains close to the road, where infrared cameras are essentially everywhere.
The tiger marmot would approach Chen Ying but wouldn’t come close to anyone else.
When other team members walked past it, the tiger marmot quickly hid away, poking its little head out from a cavern among the rock fissures and silently observing their movement.
“Mr. Chen, what did you say this animal was called again? We’ve never seen it before.”
“This little fellow is called a tiger marmot, other names include flower land dog, smelly dog, and Ma Aihu.”
“Hey, I’ve heard of Aihu.”
“That’s right, we have Ai You here. But they belong to the same family as the tiger marmot, though not the same genus.”
Along the way, Chen Ying educated them about the weasel family, and he sent them some pictures of the weasel family so they could visually differentiate the appearances of the weasels.
“Some who are not very familiar with wild animals might confuse the Ai You and the stone mink. But they really are not the same animal. One is from the weasel family, and the other is from the weasel family, and there are significant differences in their appearances.”
Just as a team member who wasn’t sure if the stone mink was the Ai You shrunk his head, he felt fortunate he hadn’t spoken out in time, otherwise he would have suffered social death right then and there.
As they walked and talked about wildlife, the team members listened seriously.
They also received cultural training, and their unit organized relevant professional skill training for them.
But many times, seeing was feeling entirely different from not seeing.
For example, Chen Ying’s mention of stone minks, Ai You, and tiger marmots. The former two are slightly similar in appearance, while the latter two have similar alternative names.
Without seeing them with their own eyes, all the words floated in their minds, not really making sense.
But a single glance made everything clear.
Especially the distinctive little flower cap on the tiger marmot – such a unique appearance, impossible to mistake!
As they talked, time passed quickly, and it seemed the climb wasn’t so tiring anymore.
“This way, keep going up, just below that cliff is the position of the infrared camera.”
Little Ji was responsible for leading the way and also helping his teammates climb the slope, now he too began to gasp for breath.
“In April this year, we came up here to retrieve a batch, and this spot captured over a hundred photos of snow leopards, along with various other animals. Even blue pheasants, who knows how they got up here.”
No sooner had he finished his sentence than they heard a few deep, angry roars from above.
“Quick, are they fighting, let’s go.”
Old Yang rushed up anxiously, but Chen Ying grabbed him.
“Old Yang, slow down, watch your step, don’t hurt yourself.”
Old Yang paused, then nodded vigorously, trying to calm his excited emotions.
“Little Ji, you and I will go up first to take a look, the rest follow behind, but don’t run too fast, it’s different up here on the mountain than down below.”
Everyone understood, Old Yang had been too excited just a moment ago.
Chen Ying and Little Ji picked up the pace, approaching the deployment site of the infrared camera.
Carefully peeking around a rock, they saw a fight.
But it was three snow leopards pinning down two flower leopards and pummeling them.
The main ones in the fray were Yellow Fur and an unfamiliar snow leopard, while Er Niu bit and scratched on the side, primarily contributing to the fight.
Chen Ying gave Little Ji a hand signal and took out a tranquilizer dart pipe.
At that moment, Er Niu also spotted Chen Ying and was about to come over when she saw Chen Ying take out a long rod aimed at the flower leopard that was fighting with Yellow Fur.
Er Niu’s eyes rolled, and she pounced, fiercely biting the flower leopard’s tail.
The flower leopard howled in pain, turned around, and pounced at Er Niu.
In that split second, Chen Ying fired decisively, a tranquilizer dart firmly sticking into the flower leopard’s neck. The startled flower leopard, attempting to flee, was seized by the nape with a bite from Yellow Fur.
The other flower leopard, seeing the tide turn, dropped its companion and tried to run away.
The snow leopard it was fighting, with a scarred face bleeding from scratches, leapt viciously over and bit into the flower leopard’s shoulder bone, drawing blood instantly.
With a miserable scream, the flower leopard shook off the snow leopard’s hold, fiercely biting at the snow leopard’s forelimb.
Er Niu slapped decisively, sending a paw strike that rolled the flower leopard on the ground and right in front of the rock where Chen Ying was positioned.
“Phew,” the tranquilizer dart hit its target.
This leopard was more ferocious and slightly larger, so to be safe, Chen Ying gave it an additional dart.
The tranquilizer dosage was very small, and one could administer another shot if the initial dose was insufficient.
Moreover, these two flower leopards had to be brought down the mountain for examination to determine what had caused their frenzy.
After felling the two flower leopards, Chen Ying directed the arriving team members to call the nearest group for backup.
It would be quite a task for just a few of them to carry both leopards down the mountain.
The stretcher poles used for carrying leopards were custom-made, composed of titanium alloy, lightweight with high mechanical strength, suitable for rescue operations.
After securely tying the leopards’ limbs and fixing them to the stretcher, it would take four people to carry them down the mountain, with several changes of hands needed along the way.
While the team members were handling the anesthetized Flower Leopard, Chen Ying took out wound treatment medicine from her medical fanny pack to treat the injuries of the unfairly provoked Snow Leopard.
The wound wasn’t particularly deep, but it almost ran across the whole face.
And it was a mere half centimeter from cutting across the eye; it could have very well damaged the eyeball.
The Snow Leopard only allowed Chen Ying to treat its facial wounds; the injuries on its limbs and body were not severe, and it was accustomed to licking its own wounds.
After treating the injuries and when no one was paying attention to them, Chen Ying quickly inquired about the whereabouts of another leopard.
“No idea, they came as a pair.”
The Snow Leopard huffed angrily and said, “These two sneaks came to attack me, luckily I reacted quickly, otherwise they would have succeeded.”
Yellow Fur snorted beside them, causing the Snow Leopard to bare its teeth in a grimace.
Just then, the team tracking up the river valley reported that they found the third Flower Leopard, on the brink of death.
“Judging by the scene, it seems to have fallen from the mountain and took a pretty bad hit. Its limbs are responsive, but there is something abnormal in its abdomen, suspecting severe internal bleeding due to injuries.”
Their path was somewhat easier, and after discovering the leopard, they administered some simple treatment on the spot before swiftly evacuating it with a stretcher.
With that, all three leopards were captured, their mission completed, and it was time to withdraw.
Er Niu and Yellow Fur also followed them down the mountain.
The mountain here wasn’t enjoyable at all, not like their territory where they could eat Rock Sheep or donkey meat whenever they wanted, and there were all sorts of delicious rabbits and mice. Unlike here, where they had to fight tooth and claw for food.
The Snow Leopard perked up its ears to listen to Er Niu and Yellow Fur’s incessant chatter, curious about the place Er Niu mentioned and planned to check it out once its injury healed to see if it was as good as described.
Tourism, after all, is about going from a place one is tired of to another place someone else is tired of; the same logic applies to animals!
Back at the mountain’s base, a transfer vehicle from the Rescue Station that received the message was already waiting on the side of the road.
The two Flower Leopards were carried onto the vehicle separately, and together with the previous convoy, they bustlingly headed towards Qing Province’s Wildlife Rescue and Shelter Center.
Chen Ying didn’t go; she had to return Er Niu and the others first.
Besides, there were already specialists waiting over there; there was no need for her to join the bustle.
However, Qing Ye’s Veterinarian was in contact with her, and the two exchanged messages privately. Chen Ying could learn the detailed findings so long as they could be disclosed.
Back at the Rescue Center, they picked up Jinya, Little Jin, the Snow Leopard Cub, along with the Little Lynx, which showed significant improvement from treatment—a single person, a vehicle full of animals, heading straight for River Source Protection Station.
Little Lynx would undergo a semi-wilderness adaptation test over the winter here.
The main concern was whether its heart function would become hazardous under extreme cold conditions.
Of course, they wouldn’t just toss the Little Lynx out to fend for itself. This semi-wilderness area spanned ten square kilometers, plenty for Little Lynx to go wild.
Even the Snow Leopard Cub had taken a liking to the place. After all, in addition to the naturally growing flora and fauna, the semi-wild area also meticulously prepared a variety of nutritious supplementary meals for Little Lynx and didn’t forget about the equally immature Snow Leopard Cub.
But within a week, it was visibly plumper.
To ensure it got enough exercise, Chen Ying had no choice but to ask Xiao Song to arrange the Little Lynx’s supper and snacks separately.
The first day, the Snow Leopard Cub was a bit confused as it missed out on its extra meal and had to hunt for rabbits to satisfy its hunger.
Still missing out on the second day, and by the third day, the Snow Leopard Cub, upon finding out the Little Lynx had a special treat, began to throw a tantrum, bawling and shouting, all thunder and no rain.
Chen Ying, with a heart of steel, ignored it and turned to install an animal exercise wheel in the semi-wilderness area.
This exercise wheel was modeled after one from a certain online shop and was specially customized by a carpenter, which she then assembled herself.
The material used was very sturdy to avoid breaking after just a few uses.
The installation site was next to the animal shed, which also had an animal shed built over it with wood piled inside and a platform built from several large stones.
The exercise wheel was placed beside the pile of stones.
This new toy had barely been installed when Jinya and Er Niu started squabbling over who got to play on it first.
Jinya’s size allowed her to enjoy it a bit, but the wheel was too strained with Er Niu on it.
Er Niu, unsatisfied, tossed aside a few proverbial beans in frustration.
Chen Ying hurriedly promised to custom-make one for her, but because of the cold, transportation was restricted, so it likely wouldn’t be until spring before she could play with it.
Er Niu, feeling brushed off, turned and ran off; she didn’t come back that whole evening.
Jinya, who was initially excited to have her turn, lost interest in playing and left the little ones to frolic. She discussed with Little Jin whether they should go look for Er Niu.
But the wilderness at night was too cold, and Little Jin, lacking thick fur, couldn’t withstand the dreadful weather.
Even the Lynx could only wander around the wilderness in the early night and at dawn.
During the coldest part of the night, it had to seek shelter from the wind and rain.
Otherwise, the Lynx would turn into an ice sculpture.
“Don’t worry, that Leopard has already gone after her. If we still don’t see her by tomorrow morning, I’ll go with you to look for her,” she reassured.
As soon as she finished speaking, she saw Lynx Sister carrying over a wolf cub in her mouth.
“Did you run off for revenge?”
Jinya leaned in to sniff, concern in her tone.
“If you steal the wolf cub, won’t those wolves come for revenge?”
“They probably won’t; I found this cub on the road.”
Lynx Sister dropped the whining little cub onto the ground and spit out a mouthful.
“That pack of wolves is probably mostly dead by now.”
