Thud!

"What?" Xin Yan paused, startled by seeing the woman suddenly collapsing on the ground.

Noah also stopped, his eyes lowered as a pained expression flashed through his face. "Look at her feet."

Hearing his words, Xin Yan's gaze fell, and she finally realized that the woman had been running through the forest all this time barefoot; there were several cuts and scratches on her feet, but she did not halt her search.

The reason she lost consciousness was not these minor injuries but a small spike of a vine right by her side; it had stabbed deep in her ankle when she turned around suddenly.

"This vine is poisonous." Seeing the dark color of the vine, Xin Yan spoke in panic and appeared beside the woman.

"The detoxification pill will not work on her since she is a mortal." Noah said while scanning the wound on her foot. "Let me try something else."

Walking up to the woman, he crouched down at her feet. His hands glowed in an ethereal radiance above the darkening patch of skin, the same place she was injured by the poisonous plant.

Her skin started to regain its glow while drops of purple liquid seeped out from the wound and slipped down. The tear in the skin started to close on its own within seconds.

Xin Yan looked back at the woman's face, and seeing her complexion returning to normal and her breathing stabilizing, she heaved a sigh of relief.

She did not stay unconscious for long and stirred from her sleep; her eyes fluttered before jerking back up.

She wanted to get up, but seeing the two unknown people right by her side, she became vigilant and backed away. "Are you cultivators?"

Their appearance, transcending the scopes of what she had seen or could define, had already answered what she had asked.

Noah could see a flicker of hope appearing in her eyes before it disappeared without a trace.

"What can this humble servant help immortal master with?" Her head was lowered, and her eyes were on the ground.

"We are not here to ask for help." Noah glanced at Xin Yan, who looked at the woman with complex emotions. His words made the woman tense.

If they did not come to her to ask something, what could she possibly help them with?

Were they after her?

Several dark thoughts flashed through her mind, but she did not once raise her head, but Noah's next words compelled her to.

"We are here to help you."

She looked at him in a trance, without blinking, doubting her own ears.

"Help me?" she repeated, and Xin Yan nodded.

"We saw you roaming through the forest aimlessly, and you seemed troubled. Can you tell us what happened? Maybe we can be of some help." She did not say that they had been following her from the start.

"But I have nothing to offer to the immortal master." The woman muttered with a distant look on her face, "I am but a poor widow who could barely make enough—"

"Stop!" Noah placed his right hand on her shoulder, causing the woman to shudder.

Her first thoughts were that she had somehow offended this powerful immortal, but Noah's firm grip on her shoulder did not allow her to kneel or bow to him.

"We are here to offer our help to you, and we do not need anything." Noah looked in her eyes, expressing his sincere wishes. "Don't think too much about it; just take it as me and my wife having too much time on our hands and deciding to help you out."

His voice grew softer as he continued to speak, but it had a deeper impact on the cold heart of the woman.

Though still hesitant and uncertain about his intentions, she knew she had no other choice; if she wanted to do something about her child, she had to put her trust in the two cultivators in front of her.

She poured her heart out before the two of them; tears followed the words that came out of her mouth. She told them everything that had happened to her and the dark shadow that had been looming over their town.

"People say our town is cursed." The woman had introduced herself as Ah Shi. "12 people, be it kids or adults, have been taken from here, and…"

Her voice croaked, "My kid was the 13th."

Xin Yan hugged the woman from the side, allowing her to cry on her shoulder. "I just want my child back…"

She looked at Noah and then at the woman in her arms, brushing her hair back. "Can you tell us about these kidnappings? Maybe we can find something that can be of help."

She moved away from Xin Yan, giving her an apologetic look. She wiped her tears while recounting everything she knew.

"I don't know much about other kidnappings; I am a widow with a son to take care of… the more I keep to myself, the easier it is for me."

"But… I heard people saying that even the son of the magistrate was kidnapped, and he was a legendary immortal just like yourself." As if recalling something, tears filled her eyes once more. "I don't even understand why someone would take my child?"

"We are poor, and how can someone like him interest someone who kidnapped an immortal cultivator? He was not even in good health."

Her words immediately caught Noah's attention. "Something happened to him?" he asked.

"He had a very high fever for the past few days, and even he could not stop coughing." She clenched the hem of her robes. "I took him to the miracle healer in our town for a checkup. We had to visit her again for another check, but today he went out to play with other kids and never came back, and then…"

She took out the small piece of clothing, the one she got from the older guard, and presented it to Noah. "Please help me find my son… I will do anything for you. Be it my body or soul, I will sacrifice it all. He is the only reason I am even living."

Xin Yan held tightly on to the grieving woman and looked at Noah with a sad look on her own face. She knew better than anyone else how true her words were.

Noah saw the look she was giving him and sighed in his heart, "What can you tell me about this miracle healer?"

"The healer?" Ah Shi? she asked with a confused look before spilling everything she knew.

"Miss Carla is a very loving woman; she treats anyone who goes to her for free!" There was respect and reverence for the woman in her eyes. "She was also treating my son yesterday…"

"She is from this town?" Xin Yan asked, a frown appearing on her face.

"No, Miss Clara came from outside. I do not know where she comes from, but she came to the town a year ago."

By this time even Noah showed some abnormal expression on his face. "When did these disappearances start?"

Ah Shi stopped, her eyes stared at the ground for a few seconds before they widened ever so slightly. "You don't think she had anything to do with this, do you?"

"Although these kidnappings started just before she came to the town, she has nothing to do with this. Why would she do this? She helped us a lot."

Even though she was trying to defend the woman, it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself than Noah and Xin Yan.

Noah did not instantly dissuade her and asked softly, "Why do you believe she is innocent? She seems to be very suspicious to me."

"Because even the magistrate Zhao also said the same thing and sent the guards to search her temple even when the people opposed this.

But Healer Clara was magnanimous enough to cooperate with them, and the guards found no clue related to the kidnappings to her. " Despite her words, Ah Shi felt an ominous feeling gnawing in her chest. 'Could she really be the culprit of all this?'

If it was not her son who was kidnapped, she would not even have thought of something like this. The healer was her benefactor, and how could she point fingers at her benefactor?

What do you think? Noah used telepathy to send Xin Yan a message and instantly got a reply: This healer seems very odd; she is too clean, and she also has the great support of these mortals.

Why do you need to defend yourself when others do it for you, huh? Noah hummed thoughtfully before making a decision. "Where can we find this healer?"

Ah Shi snapped out of the daze and slowly stood up with Xin Yan's help. "She usually stays at the temple; everyone goes there to ask for her help. I can take you there."

Once deciding on their destination, Noah waved his hand, enveloping their bodies with a golden glow before all three of them vanished from sight.
