Chapter 115: A bit desperate?

Brandon finally let out a deep breath and the stiffness in his back had lessened considerably under Dhayun’s effective foot massage, but there were still lingering knots in his lower spine and shoulders.

He flexed his arms forward and started to push himself up from the couch as he straightened up.

"Oof..." he muttered, arching his back slightly as he sat upright, rolling his shoulders.

"Better, but not perfect."

Looking at him, Dhayun tilted her head "Still sore?"

He nodded "Yeah. The part near my lower spine is still tight."

Dhayun gently stepped behind him, knelt onto the couch, and brought her hands gently to his shoulders "Alright. Stay still. I’ll finish the job properly."

Without waiting for further protest, her fingers began to work into his shoulder muscles as her thumbs dug into the base of his neck.

Her touch, though firm, held a gentleness that made it easy to lean into.

With fluid motions, she began kneading his shoulders, tracing the tension lines that had built up along his back.

Brandon closed his eyes again, his body slightly leaning forward as her hands rolled over his shoulder blades, then worked their way downward.

Dhayun adjusted her position, shifting to kneel beside him now, her hands pushing into the muscle between his ribs and spine.

Her hands moved in slow circles now, focused on the lower back.

She used her knuckles in gentle circular pressure, leaning her body forward for leverage, her breath brushing faintly against his ear as she worked deeper into the sore spots.

Brandon hissed softly when she hit a particularly tight knot.

"Yeah... that’s the spot," he muttered.

"Mm. I felt that," Dhayun nodded. "Hold on."

She gently pressed her thumbs inward and then drew her hands up in a smooth arc, stretching the tension away.

Then she tapped his shoulder "Alright. Time for stretches. You need to loosen that spine."

Huh? He looked up at her tiredly "We really need to do that?"

"Yes. Stop whining."

With a firm pull, she pulled his arms back, lifting them above his head.

Brandon winced, but followed her lead.

She knelt behind him again and placed one of her knees just against his lower back for support.

"Alright, deep breath. Arch your back, push your chest forward slowly."

He exhaled shakily. "I feel like an old man..."

"Who told you to sleep like a shrimp?" Now this is what you get for that."

When he bent forward, she braced his shoulders.

When he stretched back, she supported his lower back.

After several minutes of stretching and deep breaths, Brandon straightened up, rolling his arms again.

This time, the tightness was gone.

He flexed his back and twisted from side to side.

"...Huh."

"Better?" she asked, tilting her head.

"Yeah. A lot better, actually," he said, patting his side. "It’s like you reset my whole body."

Smiling, Dhayun walked over to the side and took his shirt and blazer "Come here I will help you put it on."

With a shrug, Brandon stood up and stretched his arms above his head one last time, eliciting a satisfying crack from his spine.

She picked up his dress shirt and helped him slip one arm through the sleeve.

Then the other. She straightened the collar carefully, her fingers brushing against his skin as she smoothed it out across his shoulders.

Her eyes flicked down toward his scar again for a brief moment, but she didn’t comment this time.

She buttoned up the front of his shirt and when she reached the top button, she stopped and looked up into his eyes.

"...You okay now?" she asked softly.

Brandon looked at her for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. Thanks, Dhayun."

She smiled faintly and reached for his blazer next, helping him into it like a devoted assistant dressing a noble heir.

Once it was on, she adjusted the lapel and stepped back to admire her work.

"There," she said with a satisfied nod. "You’re presentable again. Though your face still looks annoying."

Brandon just smiled dryly as he corrected his blazer while she put on her shoes.

Looking at him, she tilted her head as she asked in a quieter voice "Hmm... that reminds me, that girl, Eira Bleaufort, are you guys both a thing?"

Hearing this, he raised hsi gaze to look at her "Well, if you are asking if we are in a relationship... yeah, we are."

Her gaze condensed slightly "How... its been like only three or four weeks since you have been here and already a girlfriend?"

Brandon gave a nod with a smile "Well, everything went well... so it just happened."

She looked at him seriously and spoke in a blunt tone "Idiot. How can you get into a relationship with a girl you’ve known for just three weeks? Do you even understand what kind of family she comes from?"

"She’s from one of the Five Great Houses, Brandon."

"All of them... Bleaufort, Rhiannon, Caeles, Sytheria, and Vernhail—they’re all bound by one principle. Tradition. Authority. Power."

"And that power? It’s wielded exclusively by women. You really think they’ll let a man waltz into their legacy without resistance?"

Seeing her concern, he let out a sigh "Don’t worry... I have already talked with her mother, and she accepted our relationship."

Huh? Dhayun was surprised to hear this "She accepted?"

Brandon let out a faint sigh before nodding his head "Yeah, her mother is a good woman and she accepted."

Dhayun, however, desperately shook her head "No, Brandon... no. That’s not how these families work."

She took a step closer, her voice rising just enough to show how serious she was. "They didn’t accept you because they’re ’good people.’ They accepted you because you’re the first male Ether user."

"You’re unique. A living anomaly in a system that’s been one-sided for centuries."

"They’re not opening their doors to you because of kindness. It’s cold, political strategy. They must have plans for you. Some twisted intention behind those smiles."

"If you are a normal male, they would have killed yo-"

But before she could go on, Brandon gently stepped forward and reached out, gently grasping her wrist "Dhayun..."

She stopped and looked into his soft eyes "Brandon..."

Keeping his smile, he spoke in a warm tone "I know you’re concerned. And I know you’re not saying this out of jealousy or resentment. You’re worried about me... and I get that."

"You’ve always been looking out for me. Even when I’m being reckless or even when I make dumb decisions..."

A small, lopsided smile tugged at his lips. "You’ve always been there."

She looked down at their joined hands, biting her lower lip slightly.

"You don’t have to worry this time.. its all good."

Her lips trembled slightly. "Do you... love her that much?"

Brandon didn’t even hesitate and nodded his head "Yeah. I do."

She looked down again, her shoulders slumping just a bit more.

"...Then I guess there’s nothing I can say to stop you, huh?" she muttered with a weak smile.

Brandon just chuckled, and she hit his chest "You idiot."

Her fingers tightened on his fingers as she muttered "Just... if she ever hurts you, Brandon... I’ll rip her fucking heart out. Bleaufort or not."

Upon hearing this, Brandon let out a chuckle "Haa... you are more reckless than me."

She turned her head away, her eyes shimmering faintly under the light "And if you ever stop being honest with me, I’ll break your knees."

"A little extreme, but I’ll take it," he said with a smile.

Then, with a scoff, she turned around and walked to the lounge door "Let’s leave then.. buy me that coffee."

Brandon looked at her back for a moment ’Does... she love me?’

He is not dense enough not to see through her feelings.

He knew Dhayun better than anyone would.

She had always been there... annoying, loud-mouthed, and merciless when it came to teasing him or beating him.

When he was angry, she listened.

When he was hurt, she didn’t cry, but she would hit the person who hurt him ten times harder.

But he knew that for all the years he spent with her, she has never once looked at him in that romantic way.

She has always been a Big Sister looking after her reckless younger brother.

But today... she seemed a bit different.

’Is it because of Eira?’

When he said he loves Eira, the expression on her face was....

That look in her eyes... like someone who had finally realized something too late.

Or perhaps someone who had known for a long time and only now found the courage to show it, only to watch the opportunity slip away.

’Is she really jealous?’

’Did she only just realize how she feels? Or... has she always known and kept it buried?’

He exhaled slowly, dragging a hand through his hair as he is uncertain how to feel about this.

He didn’t want to hurt Dhayun. She is too important to him.

’And if I asked about this, our current relationship might get awkard... fuck.’

Letting out a deep sigh, he stepped out of the lounge door and looked at Dhayun who was already waiting for him.

"Took you long enough."

Chuckling, he replied "I was just thinking."

She gave him a side-eye "Dangerous thing for you to do."

He just smiled and wrapped his arm around her shoulder "Come on..."
