Chapter 50: Alex and Mommy (KEY)
Cecilia’s mind was overwhelmed with sadness, completely cutting off what Alex was saying.
Her tears fell heavily onto the carpet as Frank’s last words came through the phone.
"You should have just died back then with your child!"
After speaking, he abruptly hung up, leaving only the beeping sound in the room. frёewebηovel.cѳm
‘Die... with my child?’
Cecilia was deeply shocked, her thoughts drifting back to four years ago when she gave birth.
After Frank had taken her son away, she had weakly pursued him but fainted at the end of the corridor.
When she woke up, she was told she had given birth to twins, and her daughter was still there.
After much hesitation, she chose to take her daughter and go abroad.
She was the one who gave up on her son first.
If she had insisted on staying in the country and finding her son at the time, perhaps he wouldn’t have died.
Her newborn son only had his mother to rely on, yet she selfishly took only her daughter abroad.
It was her fault that he died!
Over the years abroad, she kept trying to find any traces of him, but her attempts always ended with her hands empty. She had even suspected that he might no longer be alive.
Every year on his birthday, she would wake up from nightmares. In those nightmares, she would see a tearful face identical to Emma’s, questioning why she gave up on him.
Still, she always felt some spiritual connection with him, unwilling to think of the worst.
Now, it seemed like she had been too presumptuous.
“My son... I’m sorry... it was your mother who harmed you..."
‘With the mountain wind blowing coldly, did your cries echo throughout it without a response?’
‘As your cries slowly grow weaker, with how painful it must have been to be mauled by beasts then...‘
“You should have died with your child!”
Frank’s words felt like a curse clinging to Cecilia’s mind.
Numbly wiping her tears, she muttered to herself, "I should... have died together..."
Alex had never seen Cecilia like this before, utterly frightened and extremely worried.
"Mommy! Mommy! I am your son! Please look at me!"
As he spoke, his tears involuntarily came out; seeing his mother like this hurt him deeply.
He blamed himself for never revealing his identity, thinking she would have been happy much longer ago if only she knew he was her son.
Making her happy was all he wanted.
"Mommy... I’m sorry, I lied to you, sob..."
Alex’s cry reached Cecilia’s ears, making her notice the little figure who was now sobbing as he stared at her with worry.
Cecilia lightly slapped her forehead.
What was she doing?
Emma was still by her side; how could she have entertained such thoughts?
She softly wiped away Alex’s tears, her voice filled with guilt.
"I’m sorry, Emma, it’s Mommy who..."
Alex quickly interjected. "No, Mommy, you don’t need to apologize. I was the one who lied to you; I am your son."
Cecilia felt even more guilt-ridden. She knew her current state must have influenced Emma; when they lived abroad, Emma would oftentimes pretend to be her brother so she could cheer herself up, dressing up in boy’s clothes and even adopting boyish traits after returning home.
"Emma, it’s Mommy who has been neglecting you lately. You are you, and your brother is your brother; you don’t need to console me like this."
Alex became anxious upon hearing this, eager to prove himself as he pulled Cecilia toward the door.
"I truly am your son. I’m Alex Lawrence, and my daddy is Steven Lawrence. I look exactly like my sister. We’ve been switching places; if you don’t believe me, let’s go upstairs and see!"
Moments ago, Emma had messaged him, saying Steven had decided to stay in the presidential suite at the hotel since it was closer to the hospital and he could monitor Marianne. Due to this, she and Steven were staying there temporarily.
Cecilia, somewhat convinced by Alex’s earnestness, followed him into the elevator leading to the presidential suite.
The elevator required identity verification and facial recognition that only the members of the Lawrence family could use. Alex stood on his tiptoes, bringing his small face up to the camera.
With a beep, the elevator began to move.
"Welcome, Master Alex Lawrence," intoned the elevator.
Master Alex Lawrence?
Cecilia looked at Alex in disbelief, memories flashing through her mind rapidly.
Her ‘daughter’ suddenly lost interest in her beloved cupcakes...
Her ‘daughter’ suddenly developed a liking for math problems...
Her ‘daughter’ suddenly became proficient with the harp...
As she pondered, the elevator arrived, and Alex pointed to Steven’s room.
"My sister is inside," he said before turning to hide by the stairs.
If Steven noticed he had been duped, he would surely be furious. It was best to let Cecilia and Emma meet first.
Although Cecilia was already somewhat convinced that Alex was indeed her son, she needed to see for herself to be sure.
Taking a deep breath, she rang Steven’s doorbell.
The door quickly swung open, revealing Emma, who thought it was Steven and was cheerfully smiling.
"Daddy, is my cupcake here yet?"
Once she recognized the surprised figure before her was Cecilia, she gasped. "Mommy?!"
Cecilia had not even responded yet when Steven’s icy voice resonated behind her.
"What Mommy?"
