Glamour and Sass: A Rejected Bride's Revenge-Chapter 68: Looking for Lilian
Chapter 68: Looking for Lilian
Cecilia looked at the phone screen where the name "Doris Clark" was flashing. She cleared her throat before answering the call.
"Miss Clark."
Doris was Lilian’s vocal teacher back then, with the latter being her last student. Unfortunately, Lilian passed away early, but Doris still attended the funeral despite being bedridden.
A voice, elderly yet clear and melodious, came from the other end of the line.
"Cecilia, the Whitmore family is looking for your mother to perform ’The Wind Stops’ again. Please be careful."
Cecilia was surprised that the Whitmore family was looking for Lilian. This news was really out of the blue.
She was familiar with "The Wind Stops," a song Lilian had kept private that Cecilia often heard her sing when she was little.
However, Lilian had already passed away. The Whitmore family might be disappointed.
"Okay, thank you for letting me know, Miss Clark. How’s your health?"
She wasn’t very close with Doris, but on her mother’s funeral day, Doris was the only one who took her aside to scold her.
That day, while sitting in a wheelchair, she showed Cecilia her frail legs and sternly told her that she must rely on herself.
At that moment, Cecilia was so overwhelmed with grief that she forgot to cry, but she finally broke down in front of Doris and cried.
When Doris left, she gave Cecilia her number.
"Remember, this will be the last time you cry."
This very sentence had motivated her all along—no matter how difficult things seemed to get, she had always marched through.
Deep down, Cecilia truly appreciated her.
"... I’m sturdy enough, so don’t worry about it."
With that, Doris hung up, as strong-willed as ever.
The next morning, Cecilia had a rare chance to sleep in, completely unaware that Emma had already quietly gotten out of bed.
Emma stood in front of a small mirror, putting on a stylish little hat before scribbling a few wobbly large letters on a piece of paper.
"Mommy, I went out to play~"
Then, she tiptoed out of the room.
She had an important date with Ethan today to play chess.
He had always teased her, saying she resembled a foreign doll and she wasn’t as cute as other girls. How could she tolerate that? Thus, they agreed to meet at the park’s chess tables for a three-hundred-round showdown.
As soon as Emma arrived at the park, she saw Ethan excitedly gesturing at the chessboard behind an elderly player.
"Ah, you should have placed it here!"
Emma tiptoed behind Ethan and softly called out.
"Uncle~" freёnovelkiss.com
Ethan looked behind him, his heart melting when he saw Emma’s adorable little face.
Indeed, she was the cutest little girl in the world.
He had told her she wasn’t as cute as other girls on purpose just to bring out her competitive spirit. That way, she would agree to come out and play with him.
Alex, who was at school now, was the one who had taught him this tactic. In the end, it worked like a charm.
"Uncle, is this the chess you were talking about?"
Ethan picked Emma up so she could see the whole chessboard.
"Learn a bit first, so you won’t say I bullied you later."
After watching two rounds of the chess game, Emma patted Ethan’s shoulder.
"I’ve learned it. Let’s compete."
Ethan widened his eyes in disbelief.
"You only saw two games, but you’re ready to go? Didn’t your mommy teach you not to brag?"
She jumped to the ground and sat at the adjacent chessboard.
"Let’s start!"
He skeptically placed the first piece.
Ten minutes later, he couldn’t help but think as he gazed over his devastating defeat.
‘Is this little devil really four? How is she so good?!’
"No way, let’s go again. I was being too careless."
Five minutes later.
"Uncle, you lost again."
At some point, a crowd had gathered around them as they were all exclaiming in surprise. Moreover, some had even started recording videos.
"This little girl is amazing..."
Embarrassed, Ethan suggested continuing.
However, they stopped the game since Emma said she was feeling hungry.
In reality, she just didn’t want Ethan to embarrass himself any further...
Over at the Whitmore family, Thomas had woken up but was still bedridden.
Wynne stayed by his side, looking worried.
Thomas reassured him, "I know my situation. You shouldn’t blame yourself too much."
Wynne’s nose felt a bit sour, quickly turning his face away.
"Turn on the TV; I want to watch a chess game."
In his old age, the only thing he was interested in left was chess because he had learned it from Lilian.
As soon as the TV came on, it played a news segment.
"Today at New District Park, a young chess prodigy brought us a thrilling chess match. Unfortunately, the audience did not capture her appearance, but only her unique chess moves..."
Watching the chess patterns on screen, Thomas found them very familiar. The strategy the girl used here was remarkably similar to Lilian’s!
He used to joke that this strategy was unique to Lilia, yet someone else was using it, too.
At the thought, his mood lightened up a little.
At that moment, Steven happened to arrive at the restaurant where Ethan and Emma were eating.
Ethan was so unreliable that he even managed to switch Alex’s school uniform by mistake and couldn’t be contacted.
Steven planned to see what Ethan had been up to every day!
With this in mind, he pushed the restaurant door open forcefully and walked toward Ethan, who was happily eating steak.
