Chapter 37: The Hands That Steal, The Hands That Heal

Adam stared at his skeletal hand, the faint traces of lifeforce still swirling around his fingertips like glowing embers caught in a windless space. Over two thousand years... That was the lifespan of the ancient tree he had just reduced to nothing but a withered husk.

"Two thousand seven hundred and thirty-one years... from a single touch."

Adam said, his tone no higher than a common whisper to the ear, his voice having an obvious mixture of both awe and unease. It was one thing to learn about necromantic spells in the Codex Space, but another thing entirely to feel the power firsthand...both literally and figuratively.

"I know Typhon was overpowered based on the information the System got for me after looking through her Archive, but bro... this spell is still in the section where the weakest of abilities are."

Adam said to himself, not that he was complaining of course, but still, it was insane to think about, given how overpowered this basic necromantic spell of Typhon truly is.

"Hmm... the Negative Touch spel truly is busted, given how quickly I drain this tree... I wonder if the same effect would apply to a real person, damn... now I want to go and hunt for something to experiment my magic on."

He said in a curious tone, completely forgetting he was bleeding out, at the mere mention of the topic of magic, a subject he has taken great interest in.

And seeing Negative Touch in action for the first time, the spell was quite the spectacle to witness indeed.

It was a spell that allowed him to transform his arm into that of a High Lich, an undead-type monster with the ability to drain life with a mere touch. It was like an executioner’s tool, a power designed solely to take, to reap, to reduce living things to mere fuel.

But then... Adam curled his skeletal fingers inward.

The power to take life was one thing, but true mastery of necromancy lay in understanding the deeper order of existence itself. The tome describes primordial necromancy as a cycle between life and death, with neither being greater than the other, rather equal in scope, power, and importance.

The best way to describe it was to envision both life and death as nothing more but one wheel that is constantly turning.

Magic, in this case, was not just a simple spell, but rather magic that uses Primordial Necromancy is a magic which by definition taps into the idea of life and death itself with equal measure, being biased and non-bias to both life and death at the same time.

To make the user understand this, the tome gets into details, explaining that all things exist in opposition. Destruction and creation, darkness and light, death and rebirth, each force was not merely a rival to the other, but an inseparable half of a greater whole.

To wield one without knowing the other was ignorance; to understand both was wisdom. As such, the manipulation of the cycle of the subject was allowed.

By learning this, he could use the counterspell for Negative Touch.

"Positive Touch."

By his will, the life force he had taken from the tree began to coil around his fingers, as it began to shift. The eerie glow changed, dark violet hues washing away, replaced with a soft, golden radiance.

The inversion of necrosis was the best way to put this counterbalance spell.

A spell that took the lifeforce stolen through Negative Touch and repurposed it, to heal wounds, restore vitality, to defy death itself by reversing its flow back to that of life.

Life was a fire, Adam realized.

To be alive is to be tethered to the world of the living.

And living by definition is a force that dictates one’s very persistence against the erosion of time. And here he was, holding onto the very embers of another existence, even though it was but a mere tree’s life force, repurposing it for his own means in this very moment.

Thinking about the teaching of the Tome, made him ponder about using a power like this, as weak as it may be to Typhon, it was cheat-like in his hands.

But that was the least of his concerns.

Right now, he needed to heal.

And that was exactly what he was going to do.

From there Adam pressed his skeletal fingers against his chest, near his swollen liver. The moment he did, a rush of warmth spread through his body.

It was subtle at first.

A tingling sensation beneath the skin, then a rising heat that rushes through his entire body, and finally...relief.

The internal injuries that had plagued him, his battered liver, his ruptured blood vessels, the exhaustion pooling in his bones, all of it vanished as if they had never existed. His body reconstructed itself in real time, using the stolen life force to heal his wounds.

The regeneration didn’t stop there.

His left hand, the one missing three fingers began to writhe with new growth. Flesh sprouted, sinew knitted, and bones elongated, like time itself was reversing for his body. Before long, his missing fingers were back, completely restored.

Right after all of that was done, Adam flexed his hand experimentally. freewёbnoνel.com

"Ohhh... good as new... hahaha... I might not have a healing factor but I am one hell of a Doctor for sure."

Adam said out aloud, on that notion however he also felt the lifeforce he collected dwindle a little, as such he had to ask.

"Say System, more or less, how much lifeforce was used to heal this body of its injuries."

He asked, and she responded, saying as such.

『Approximately ten years were expended to fully restore your body』

Said the System, causing Adam to react as such.

"10 years out of two thousand plus... well I ain’t complaining, this means I just have more life force to heal myself, if the need arises."

However, he didn’t want to lament too much on this, as such, he took out the map once more, as he really needed to make his way to the Ultima clan.

"Hmm..."

Adam looked at the map, reading where he was, and where he needed to be, he could reach the clan by tonight if continued to fly, but that was a very bad idea, not when those Aderyn’s were flying in such large numbers.
