Chapter 39: Bulgae I

Adam kept moving.

His shoes pressed against the damp forest floor, his strides casual, but his senses were razor-sharp. His wings twitched, ready to move at a moment’s notice, and his fingers flexed as he controlled the barrier of air buried beneath the soil.

His stalkers were patient.

No sudden attacks.

No reckless lunges.

They were just by all means of the word, hunting him.

And as time went on, his unease grew, but he tried to remain calm, and not to show it.

『They’re maintaining a steady distance, but their formation is shifting Master』

Said the System, as she continued by saying.

『Two are circling ahead, likely to cut off your route. The others are adjusting their positions, boxing you in』

Adam smirked slightly.

"So they’re not just mindless beasts, huh?"

"...Well, whatever they are that is."

He muttered.

That made things interesting at the very least, although this was a dangerous situation, however, one thing he could agree on was the fact that the battle experience would be very much appreciated.

On that note, however.

The tension in the air thickened... He could feel it approaching, any moment now, whatever was hunting him would strike.

And so said, so done.

That’s when he felt it or rather heard bushes rustling around and above him.

"Yeah, this isn’t good."

Adam whispered to himself.

And soon a shadow blurred past him at insane speed.

A blur of black and red streaked through the trees, too fast for an ordinary eye to catch.

On top of that, a warning from the System came.

『Master above you』

At those words, Adam jumps, propelling his body backward.

BOOOOOM!

The ground erupted, torn apart by an unseen force as something massive lunged from the treetops and crashed down on the ground below

RUMMMBLLE!!...

The sound of the crash echoed in the area, debris flying as a result of the impact, however, at that moment, Adam hardened his wings to match them to the likes of steel, as he protected his body from the flying stones, and sticks.

"Tsk...

Adam hist at the situation, and after the creature landed from above, and the dirt cloud cleared, that was when he saw the thing that was hunting him in silence.

Then came a low growl.

Causing him to look forward, his guard all the way up to max.

"Sniff...Sniff... is it me or is that the smell of sulfur?"

He said to himself, and it didn’t take long to see where the smell was coming from.

His blue eyes flicked forward, locking onto the figure emerging from the crater from the ground.

THUD! THUD! THUD! THUD!

Its footstep was heavy as the damned beast made its way to Adam.

A beast...no, a monster was a better word for this thing.

It was massive.

A towering wolf, no rather, it lacked the elegance of such, rather it was a dog.

The dog-like creature was three meters tall, with a flaming skull for a head. Its skeletal maw burned with an eerie, unnatural fire, crimson and violet flames licking the edges of its bony jaw as it exhaled. The heat it radiated was enough to distort the air around it, causing the scenery behind it to waver like a mirage.

Its skin...if it could be called that, shifted colors, blending with the tree bark before settling into an inky black shade, like it had been drenched in pure darkness. Its elongated limbs were tipped with razor-sharp claws, easily the size of short swords.

And then...

More of them appeared.

At least fifteen smaller versions of the first monster began emerging from the surrounding trees and underbrush, forming a loose circle around Adam. Each one carried the same flaming skull for a head, though their bodies were smaller, around two meters tall instead of three.

Their growls merged into a deep, guttural chorus, reverberating through the air like the growling of a hellish choir.

The largest one, clearly the alpha lowered its stance slightly, its burning sockets staring Adam down, as if sizing him up.

Adam stood there, completely still.

Then, he sighed.

Rubbing the back of his head, he muttered.

"Man... I was kinda hoping for a nice, quiet night walk, ya know?"

He cracked his neck before slowly lowering his hand, his other hand lazily resting at his side.

"But nah... of course, I get jumped by a bunch of overgrown barbecue mutts."

He said to himself, as if accepting his fate, and then said out aloud for all to hear.

"Alright, then.... Let’s make this quick...

At this invitation, the giant Alpha Mutt began to step forward.

As he responded, with a snarl, its blazing maw widening as embers flickered from between its skeletal fangs.

Then...without hesitation.

It lunged.

A streak of black, violet, and crimson fire rushed toward him, fangs bared, claws slicing through the air with the force of a falling guillotine.

Adam barely had time to react before he went into the defensive.

CLANG!

The beast’s claw sank into his wings, despite its hardness it showed no resistance against both the great forces, and blazing heat that began to burn away at its feathers. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Inevitably though the force of the monster attack overpowered Adam in that moment.

"AHHH SHITSHITSHIT!... I am being push back."

He said gritting his teeth, as he attempted to defend against the beast.

But alas, that was but a temporary struggle.

Because soon thereafter.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

A loud shockwave was heard, as the force of the beast’s body rammed into him and clawed him.

Blasting him backward, the sheer impact launched him forwards, as he crashed through one of the massive trees behind him, bark and splinters tearing into his flesh as he tumbled across the forest floor.

『Master! You took severe damage...

However, before the System could warn Adam, he shut her up by saying.

"Yeah, no shit!"

However, he barely got the word out before another beast was already on him.

Its flaming jaws snapped inches from his throat.

Of course, Adam’s tiny body reacted before his mind did, he twisted at the last second, narrowly avoiding decapitation. But the flames coming from the beast’s skull touched his skin, and the smell of burning flesh hit his nose before the pain did.

Instinct took over.

He snapped his finger upward. In that instant, the air itself twisted, compressing into an invisible spear beneath the beast’s feet... The ground cracked... The earth detonated...and then.

Shhk!!!

The flaming hound was impaled from below, its body rocketing skyward, skewered clean through.

It shrieked, limbs convulsing, blood spraying in wild arcs as it was lifted twenty meters into the air.

Suspended, writhing, like a grotesque warning banner for the others watching.

There was no visible weapon...just an unseen force pinning the mangled beast aloft, its life draining, and innard spilling and draining out in messy streams.
