Chapter 85: What Happens When You Have Best of Both Worlds?

"More incoming, Clara."

Adam said from behind her, as the remaining Antmen from the previous wave, alongside another wave of them, followed suit.

Trampling even their injured brothers.

Clara didn’t blink.

Instead, she inhaled slowly and steadily. And then exhaled through her nose.

"I see. This is easier than I thought; telekinesis appears... straightforward. I need only direct my gaze upon the object, then apply force...psychic in nature, precisely where I wish to exert influence."

"Hmm, Oui... I want to try that next."

Said Clara, as she raised her forearms, and soon it tensed as muscle began to twitch and spasm, and beneath her sleeves, her skin shifted. A faint ripple passed down her arms, and in seconds, curved bone-like blades pushed their way out from her wrists.

Meanwhile, her feathered blade floated behind her.

Without hesitation.

Her form blurred through the air, bone-blades slicing outward in elegant arcs. One Antman lunged, she turned sideways mid-glide, letting its claw scrape harmlessly past her, then slashed upward. The blade tore through its thorax, severing it clean in half.

"Mon Dieu... These blades are far sharper than they appear at first glance."

Clara said, looking down at the severed corpse, but she didn’t have time to observe for too long.

Because soon after, another charged her flank.

She didn’t turn...or rather, she didn’t need to.

As soon as it tried to attack her, she began to use her self-mutation once more as flesh along her back rippled, then sprouted a jagged spike of bone...instantaneous. It launched backward like a harpoon, skewering the creature behind her straight through the face.

Its legs twitched.

Then it dropped.

From there, Clara also landed, knees bent, eyes glowing crimson. The cavern floor trembled with the footfalls of more incoming Antmen.

As she began to walk slowly to the horde of them.

Her veins began to darken as the flesh around her torso started to pulse and wiggle.

Soon, two additional arms sprouted from beneath her ribcage, distorted and angular, each wielding a shorter blade formed from her own mutated bone.

Three Antmen near her pounced with great speed.

But Clara met them halfway.

Combining her natural swordmanship with her vampiric abilities, truly it was the best of both worlds.

What her humanity lacked to make the Moreau swordmanship shine, her inhumanity compensated in the best way possible.

As such...Clara said nothing more.

Instead, she stepped forward, slowly, deliberately, toward the horde barreling toward her. The air around her seemed to bend ever so slightly, like heat rippling off stone. The light in the cavern didn’t shift. But somehow... the space around her did... no reality around her was distorting, until everything within a finit radius of 50 meters became incomprensible.

She raised her wrist blades, its tip aligned in a strange angle...neither forward nor back, as if it ignored the idea of direction. Her additional arms moved in unison, a quartet of blades held in unnatural stillness.

"The flaw in my family’s swordsmanship...

She murmured softly, her own voice almost drowned by the rising shrieks of the Antmen.

"...has always been the body."

Her tone was calm.

Detached even...but her eyes were set on the enemies before her.

"Our style was crafted to strike not from the hand... but from perspective. From a point that does not exist in this world, yet hovers close to it... we call it, Imaginery Axis or Phantom blade."

Her front foot slid forward. The horde was seconds away.

"Within a finite radius, every angle becomes possible. Every line of attack, accessible."

The world around her shivered as the distortion flooded all things into a pool of various colors.

Then Clara moved.... NO! Rather, she unfolded her strikes upon the distorted pool, her perspective of the enemy coming from a higher 3rd dimensional point of view, like zooming out to and actualizing everything within reach of sight.

In one instant, she stood at the front of the mob. The next, the air exploded with a chorus of shearing bone, shrieking monsters, and a sound like cloth tearing reality.

Her body remained in place, but her blades...all of them, they extended mercilessly into the space around her, whipping out in impossible trajectories.

Lines of striking force rage everywhere. Each stroke carved from an angle no eye could follow.

An arc of death, in every direction from her point of view, she can comprehend the motion of attack, but to her enemies, they did not see any attack, for they could not understand the imaginary patterns behind it.

One attack for her was like 100 random slices appearing out of nowhere for them all at the same time from a different angle altogether.

But even as the Antmen push forward to reach her.

They all died mid-charge.

Not by her stepping into their path, but by walking into the radius of her intent. Limbs dropped. Heads twisted clean from necks. Some collapsed mid-leap, bodies slashed apart by something they hadn’t seen coming. Her blades never touched all of them directly. They didn’t need to.

One fell as if cut vertically... from the side.

Another split in half, not diagonally, not across the middle, but along a spiraling plane that shouldn’t be real... In layman’s terms, she was like a walking shredder.

Adam, however, blinked from a distance, watching with a mix of awe and secondhand vertigo.

He had a surprised Pikachu face at this moment as he looked on at this one-sided massacre.

"What the hell am I looking at here? She is not even moving her hands, and they are somehow being sliced apart."

Said Adam in pure shocked at Clara’s presentation.

When looking at this, Adam could not help but question.

"Hey, System, how exactly is Clara attacking without moving?"

Hearing this question, the system began to investigate, and as soon as she found an answer, she replied saying as such.

『Well, Master, from the info I gathered in my archive, the Moreau family’s sword style works by using something called an imaginary axis. It’s like seeing the battlefield from a hidden angle...one that exists next to normal space but can’t be seen or touched by normal people』

『Inside a small area around the user, attacks don’t just come from where the sword swings. They come from every direction at once because the user is viewing space differently, like they’re standing just outside of it, looking in』

『So, when Clara attacks, she is not just swinging once; she is hitting from all sides in the same moment. It looks like one move, but it lands as many. Unless someone can see space the same way she does to an outsider, she just looks like she is not moving; as for her enemies, though, they won’t understand what is happening...or how to block it』

Explained the System, causing Adam to respond to this with a dumbfounded tone.

"Haha... Just when I thought this world could not get any weirder."
