Carl had set up a sniper rifle on the top floor of an abandoned high-rise, adjusted the scope, still with that same casual and unbridled demeanor. A constant stream of urgent voices came through his communicator, “Scavenger 13, the target is in the bridge tunnel, prepare to shoot.”
Fifteen minutes earlier, he had received an urgent mission from Scavenger, claiming they had located the long-missing target through spiritual power positioning.
Chewing gum, Carl aligned his scope with the distant bridge tunnel, searched for a few seconds, and a young man appeared in his view, currently talking to another person with his back turned towards Carl.
“Copy. Target sighted.”
As Carl replied and was about to pull the trigger, he suddenly saw the youth’s figure tilt, revealing the other person’s face. Carl’s hand trembled, he abruptly looked up towards the direction of the bridge tunnel, then quickly returned his nervous gaze through the scope.
Qiao Suisui and Anubis stood together, shoulder to shoulder, intending to walk out of the bridge tunnel. They seemed to be discussing something, but Anubis was doing most of the talking, with Qiao Suisui only occasionally responding. Carl could see the anxious and worried expression on the youth’s face, arguing with reason, while Qiao Suisui appeared resolute.
The voice in the communicator rose again, more urgent, “Scavenger 13, there’s not much time left, shoot now!”
Carl’s finger was on the trigger but did not pull. His gaze locked tightly on Qiao Suisui as he confirmed over and over that his eyes were not deceiving him.
Just then, it seemed Qiao Suisui had grown impatient with the youth’s nagging. She suddenly hooked his belt and pulled him in front of her, then stood on tiptoe, stopping just millimeters from Anubis’s lips.
At that moment, time seemed to freeze, Carl’s heart clenched tightly, his finger stiff on the trigger.
“Scavenger 13! What are you doing? Shoot!” the voice in the communicator was almost exploding.
However, Carl was as if oblivious, fixated on the scene within his scope, frozen in place.
Inside the bridge tunnel.
Anubis’s body shook violently, his back stiffening. His heart pounded fiercely, his cheeks visibly reddening, his breathing quickened.
His hands hung in mid-air as if embracing her in the void. He felt his face heating up, the words he wanted to say forgotten, his mind blank, filled only with an indescribable throbbing and the softness that was just a head tilt away.
Qiao Suisui’s hair, lifted by the wind, brushed against his chest; she lowered herself back to her heels, let go of his belt, then looked up at the stunned youth and threatened, “I’ve decided to find evidence to prove the Rebel Army’s innocence. Keep dissuading me, and I’ll kiss you.”
Anubis had been trying to convince her to stay out of the Rebel Army’s affairs; he feared she’d get implicated and end up in danger.
Anubis’s heart felt as though it was about to burst from his chest, he desperately tried to calm himself, but the blush on his face betrayed his inner turmoil and excitement.
“You can’t do this,” he said.
Teasing him, Qiao Suisui asked, “Do what?”
Anubis’s chest heaved, he frowned at her, serious, “Would you use this tactic to compromise anyone else…?” He stopped, feeling as if his heart, which had been immersed in honey, had just dropped into boiling oil.
Struggling to contain her laughter, Qiao Suisui teased, “Yeah, it’s quite effective, isn’t it? Look, you can’t even speak now.”
Anubis dropped his gaze, looking intently at her, his burning eyes wandering over her lips. “Have you done this with anyone else before?”
Qiao Suisui said with a smile, “This trick… only works on you… hmm!”
Before she could finish, her jaw was gently cradled by the youth’s powerful hand, her lips softly sealed.
Anubis closed his eyes, bowed his head, and tenderly sucked on her lips, seemingly not satisfied, he licked her tongue tip like a puppy. His movements were clearly inexperienced and shy, but they were filled with possessiveness and protectiveness, as he used his lips and teeth to grind against hers.
Qiao Suisui didn’t expect him to be serious, and her legs grew weak from the kiss. She tried to push him away with her hands on his solid chest but found herself powerless to do so. Sensing her feeble attempts to resist, Anubis immediately let her go and carefully studied her expression, worried that she might be upset.
Right at the moment when they parted, ‘Bang’, a bullet whizzed by.
However, the bullet’s aim was slightly off, grazing Anubis’s neck and drawing a strand of blood, but it was not fatal.
Anubis’s first instinct was to shield Qiao Suisui behind him. He quickly looked in the direction from which the bullet came, which was the top floor of a distant building.
“They’re here,” Anubis said, gripping her hand tightly and quickly finding cover for them.
He had Qiao Suisui crouch behind an abandoned aluminum can, a blind spot for the sniper.
“They’re after me. I’ll draw them away; you take the chance to make a quick escape.”
Qiao Suisui clutched his wrist and said, “Come with me to the Auslan Imperial Court, it’s at least safe there.”
Anubis shook his head. “I’ve been exposed. If I go to the Imperial Court with you, it will bring trouble for you.”
She wanted to say more, but her mouth was swiftly sealed with another kiss from Anubis.
“Qiao, I like you. I’ve liked you since you pretended to be male,” he confessed.
The sudden declaration left Qiao Suisui frozen in place.
“Listen to me this time, okay?” He gently caressed her cheek, his eyes filled with tenderness. “Trust me, it’s safer for you this way.”
Facing Anubis’s earnest gaze, Qiao Suisui couldn’t help but nod. “Then we’ll meet on the Southern Battlefield.”
Anubis didn’t want her to go to the Southern Battlefield, but it was clear that there was no time for further discussion. He took a long look at her before reaching into his pants pocket and placing something in her hand, giving her hand a tight squeeze. Then he turned and ran out of the tunnel with great speed.
It was only when his figure was nowhere to be seen that Qiao Suisui turned her attention back. She opened her palm to find a Wolf Tooth Necklace, woven with a rainbow of colors.
She touched the Wolf Tooth, lost in thoughts, when suddenly, a shadow loomed over her from above.
On alert, Qiao Suisui raised her head, only to pause in surprise upon seeing the person. “Carl, what are you doing here?”
The man was dressed in a black shirt, an X-shaped gun harness tightly pressed against him, highlighting his chest, making him look particularly handsome and upright. He had a somber look, biting off his gloves with his mouth to reveal his slender, powerful hands, then took the Wolf Tooth right out of her hand.
Carl sneered, playing with the Wolf Tooth Necklace on one finger, his face as dark as the bottom of a pot. He stared at Qiao Suisui and asked, “He even gave you this thing. It looks like you two have known each other for more than just a day or two, huh?”
Qiao Suisui was puzzled. “Is this a valuable thing?”
In the Interstellar, Wolf Beastmen were not a prolific species, even on the brink of extinction. It was exactly to carry the spirit of the Wolf Clan that they continued the traditional rite of kingship. Whoever defeated the Wolf King would become the new leader of the clan. And the Wolf Tooth was a proof of status.
The outside world only knew Dante Connor as brave, a former captain of the Federation’s elite forces, and the rebel leader with formidable strength. They didn’t know that he had already been defeated by his son, whom he had personally trained. Following tradition, he gave Anubis the sharpest tooth from his Beast Form, signifying his abdication and symbolizing the succession of the new Wolf King.
By giving Qiao Suisui the symbol of his status as Wolf King, Anubis was making a recognition.
A Wolf is loyal to only one partner in its lifetime.
Carl was very aware of the significance of this Wolf Tooth, but he didn’t want to say anything to Qiao Suisui.
