I Am Tired Of Being A Hero-Chapter 208: Going back to work
Chapter 208: Going back to work
Malik took a few more bites. The porridge was soft and melted without chewing. It was a bit bland with only a bit of sesame oil for flavor. This kind of porridge was the kind you had to stand by the stove and constantly stir so it would neither have lumps nor end up mashed up.
The emotions of worry and concern wafting from this person were addicting warm. Malik was not in the habit of lying to himself. He knew as long as this person was in this place, he would reconnect back here. He would always come back to Harlem.
It was funny, turns out he was also as simple as the same people he looked down on.
Ravi was sitting down on the sofa next to him, there was no smile on his face, after Malik finished drinking the small bowl of porridge, he passed him another bowl, "Have some steamed eggs."
Malik obediently took the small white bowl, the egg was smooth and flat with a bit of green onion sprinkled on top. It jiggled when his spoon touched shattering, the steamed egg inside was warm, just the right temperature. He tasted it, it was tender and subtly delicious, very light. You did not need to chew carefully, it easily slid down the throat to the stomach."
When he was done, Ravi took the bowl and gave him a bottle of water, he drank a bit.
Seeing that he had finished eating, Ravi opened his mouth but before he could speak, Malik interrupted him, "That was very reckless of me. I should have had a hot shower, changed into dry clothes and had a cup of ginger tea before going to sleep. As an adult, I have responsibilities, number one of them is taking care of myself so as not to worry those under my care. I should care more about my body."
Ravi felt as if the words were taken out of his mouth and he glared at Malik who smiled gently at him. Lana and Asher had already gone to school and he was already dressed for work when Sage had run to him, telling him that Malik was sick. Thankfully, it was just a cold from yesterday.
"As long as you know."
Malik coughed, wrapped in blankets, he looked even more fragile, like an exquisite doll that can shatter with one touch.
"You can go to work. I will be fine."
"Of course, I can trust you." Ravi bit back, not making any attempt to get up.
Malik chuckled before closing his eyes, his breathing stabilizing. Ten minutes later, A dark purple hole appeared in the room and Sage stepped out with a man in his late seventies.
It was the healer that Malik had asked him to bring. Seeing that everything was in order and the man had already started healing Malik, Ravi checked the time, It was 9 a.m. An hour late from work. He nodded at Sage, asking him to call him if there was any problem before he left.
When he arrived at the Davenport Police Bureau, it was twenty minutes after 9. He sighed and went in.
"Ravi!" Lisa who had been taking down so many statements left the person, rushing to wrap her arms around Ravi.
"You are late. Sergeant, don’t forget to deduct 100 dollars from his salary. He had already used up all of the sick days the Chief gave him." Draco called out from where he was seated.
"It is amazing how some people’s bodies can breathe and function when they do not have a heart." Lisa was half hugging Ravi and half turning so she could see and insult Draco even better.
"Hey! If two of you start, Ravi might not just run home and never come back." Sergeant Tom said as he patted Ravi on the back, "Welcome Back. How are you doing?"
"I am great. Lisa, we saw each other four days ago, could you stop hugging me so tightly? I can barely breathe."
"So cold." Lisa mumbled and Sarah chuckled, "Welcome back. Officer West. Here." She was carrying a bunch of files.
Ravi blinked, "Eh?"
Lisa chuckled, "We have been keeping your workload for you. We are the best, aren’t we?" fгeewebnovёl.com
Ravi rolled his eyes and all the sweet feelings that he had been having in his chest for these co-workers of his vanished into thin air. He pulled away from Lisa’s hug and took the files, "The very best." The words were forced from gritted teeth, causing Sarah to lower her head to hide her chuckle.
Draco did not bother to hide his laughter.
Ravi carried the files to his desk. There was no dust, he pulled the drawer and he saw a bunch of get-well cards. His lips twitched and he closed the drawers back.
The files were not of any huge case either. Mostly parking tickets and some pickpockets. Now, this was the slow-paced work that Ravi loved the most about this place. Aside from the Phantom and the Arson Avenger, nothing ever happened in this small town of his, which suited him perfectly.
"You have been keeping secrets from me, Ravi. Partners are meant to be even closer than lovers and yet you do not even trust me to keep your secrets." After the witness left, she leaned over so that she could whisper to him.
Ravi’s heart sounded pounded and he instinctively looked at the empty Captain’ ’s officer, "What are you talking about?"
Lisa frowned, "About your cute nephew. He is so cute. You did not even tell us you had gotten custody of a child. I can understand that you love your privacy very much but isn’t that a little too much, Ravi? I am your partner and you know everything about me and yet, I don’t know anything about you. I was a little hurt when the Captain brought him over that night. I can’t believe I did not know."
She looked genuinely upset.
Ravi took a deep breath, ’About that. I am sorry. His name is Asher and he is 13 years old."
