I Am Tired Of Being A Hero-Chapter 240: John
Chapter 240: John
"You know, you never told me about your boyfriend. Where did you guys meet? When? How much do you know about him?"
Lisa chuckled, "What’s up with you? Why do you want to start acting like some big bro? Our first meeting was magical. I will tell you after the case. We are here, so get down Mr. Investigator Ravi."
It was morning and downtown was even more silent than the Center. The two of them walked along the pavement to the crossroads before stopping at an open-air stall with a plastic tent.
It was a spicy crayfish store. Lisa grinned and walked up to the woman, "Hello..."
"We have nothing to say to the police. We don’t know anything." The woman was middle-aged with a burn scar on her cheeks, she wiped the table down, and her entire body gave off the hostility of not wanting to say anything to them.
"Nothing. Even about a license that has not been renewed for two years or the fake documents used to bypass a town sanitation’s law." Lisa said with a faint smile.
The woman turned fully and stared at her for a few minutes before she signed, "Let us go inside."
Inside was the back of the stall, a small barely can fit space for three people with boxes and other stored cooking items.
"If it is about Rex, everyone is saying that it was Palo who did it."
Rex, Palo? Ravi blinked, what was this woman talking about?
"We are not here for drugs. There is a man who comes here once every three days to order spicy crayfish. He is around 5 ’10, handsome, neat, and claims he is working uptown. Whenever he comes, he would sit at the edge of the tent and watches the nightclub, likes to chat, and asks a lot of questions. He is not rude, unlike people here."
The woman who was initially confused about her question, widened her eyes, "Ah! You mean John. Yes, yes. Very gently, I kept telling him that he should find a house uptown, this kind of place is not good for him, No, No, he would not listen to me. Is he dead?"
Lisa and Ravi looked at each other,
"How long has it been coming here?"
"Five months. He is a good customer. He always pays and sometimes, he even carries home leftovers."
Lisa frowned and then shook the thought off her head.
"Do you have a camera? We would like to see some footage."
The woman shook her head, "No. My camera broke five months ago. I called my daughter to fix it but anytime she fixed it, it would break again. This is a small stall. I don’t have money to buy a new one."
"Then. Can you describe this person for me?" Ravi said as he took out his pencil and a sketch pad.
"Where did you get that from?" Lisa asked, quite sure that he had been empty-handed when they came down.
"The Capital." Ravi said, causing Lisa to roll her eyes before they focused on the woman.
"Which part does not resemble him?’
"His eyes, they are very kind."
That word. Again. This was this killer’s man, he went out of his way to be very kind to people so they could never associate him with his true self.
And the choice of the bright green contacts was probably deliberate as well.
What a tricky person to catch.
They talked with her some more before they decided to visit the second stall but it was not good news either. The second barbecue stall was run by an old man who Ravi was sure was half-senile and should not be let anywhere near the fire.
They walked down for a while before they reached the third and last store, noting that the two stores did not have any cameras, this last store might just be one of their hopes to have footage.
"Lisa. Watch out!"
Lisa paused in time to stop her from bumping her feet against the abandoned statue construction that was dumped in the middle of the street.
Lisa had been extremely quiet, which was very unlike her, and she had been staring at the picture that Ravi drew.
Ravi looked at her and tried his hardest to comfort her, "The next restaurant would have a camera. Three’s the charm."
"There are a lot of guys like this. 5 ’10, slender, gentle demeanor and kind eyes."
Malik was 5’11 but Ravi nodded, "True. We are almost there."
"Police. We have a few questions for you." Lisa approached the owner of the hotpot, there was no smile on her face but her expression and aura made the man hesitate.
"Oh! Okay. What can we do to help?"
"We are looking for this person?" She raised the picture to the man who cleaned his hand with a blue towel and took the sketch pad. He turned his face unsure, he even raised the picture to the sky as if the sun would make him see the picture better.
"He looks familiar, I think he came here yesterday and the day before. He had some hotpot outside."
"Can we see his payment details?"
"Officer, this place is not uptown, we pay with cash."
"This person is a person of interest in our investigation. Can we see the footage of the camera from three days ago?"
The man looked embarrassed and lowered his head, "Our camera is faulty, some days it works but some days, it would become faulty for no reason."
He raised his hand, "I am not hiding him or lying, I swear on my mother’s grave."
Ravi blinked. There was no need for that. They still insisted on seeing the footage and the man hurriedly took them inside.
He had not lied. The images from both yesterday and the day before were all scrambled. Nothing noteworthy could be seen.
"Dad, table 4 is...Ah! That is Brother John. Did something happen to him? Oh no." The person who came in was a young woman of around 16 years with red hair and cute chubby cheeks.
"Brother John?"
"He is our best customer. He is very kind to us. Last week, my dad was not around and I was the only one minding the store. When Aunty Mimi came around to harass me for money, he was the one that defended me."
"What can you tell us about Brother John?"
The girl’s eyes turned sharp, "Did something happen?"
Ravi nodded, "Someone’s life is on the line. Anything you can remember would help."
The girl looked at her father, who nodded at her in encouragement.
