Chapter 113: Chapter 112: Please Help

Xu Xiuxiu and her son’s cold war had finally ended. As Song Chengguang’s younger aunt, Xu Jingjing had been very anxious these past few days; now that she saw the mother and son reconciling in an instant, Xu Jingjing gave her brother-in-law a radiant smile, "Brother-in-law." Xu Jingjing greeted politely.

"Siya, you’re in Z city now? How long have you been here?" Song Yuanhuan’s stern expression softened as he looked away from Xu Xiuxiu and her son, addressing his sister-in-law Xu Jingjing. He had been busy with Military District matters lately, and since Xu Xiuxiu had been living in the city, he wasn’t aware Xu Jingjing had come to Z city.

"I’ve been here for quite a few days. I’m currently working as a waitress in my sister’s shop. Today is my day off, so she brought me to the Military District to see the world." Xu Jingjing squinted her eyes and replied excitedly to Song Yuanhuan’s question, "Brother-in-law, you’re really awe-inspiring now, even a Lieutenant Colonel, that’s so impressive!" All along the way as she walked in, many people saluted her sister, and standing beside her, there was a sense of shared glory, which was just too cool.

"Mhm." Song Yuanhuan simply nodded, not disagreeing with Xu Jingjing’s praise.

Seeing her brother-in-law’s indifferent demeanor, Xu Jingjing didn’t mind and turned around to start flipping through the channels on the living room TV, settling in to watch with enthusiasm.

These days, Song Yuanhuan had been somewhat busy and hadn’t seen his son and daughter-in-law for half a month. He might have wanted to have a warm chat with Xu Xiuxiu, but it didn’t seem appropriate in front of his nephew and sister-in-law—a meal was had at noontime, and after glancing at Xu Xiuxiu, he left in a hurry.

After the lunch was over, Xu Xiuxiu began cleaning up in the kitchen.

Xu Jingjing, having finished her lunch, took Song Chengguang to sit on the sofa and watch TV, but the current programs were few and far between. After watching for some time and growing bored, she began to glance at Xu Xiuxiu now and then.

"Alright, stop looking at me. The sun’s not too strong now; I’ll take you out for a walk around the military wives’ base." Xu Xiuxiu, having dealt with the household chores, picked up a newly printed genuine copy of Dream of the Red Chamber to read, but couldn’t focus with Xu Jingjing throwing pitifully bored glances at her from time to time, so she decided to take Xu Jingjing for a walk around the military wives’ base.

"Yay!" Xu Jingjing immediately stood up from the sofa and picked up little Chen Guang who was sitting beside her: "Come on, Chen Guang, your aunt will put a coat on you. Although it’s noon, it’s still cold outside, right?" Although it was already spring and the season of rebirth for all living things, Z city was still chilly and even carried a dampness.

"Thank you, Auntie." Song Chengguang politely thanked her: "Don’t forget to put on my duck hat." Song Chengguang didn’t like wearing hats, but earlier in the year, Xu Xiuxiu was worried that the little lad might freeze his ears, so she bought him several hats to keep warm. However, he had not worn them for even a day until recently when he had a haircut, and he himself dug out the hats.

"Of course, I won’t forget!" Xu Jingjing replied as she took the little hat and properly placed it on the little guy: "Oh my, my little Chen Guang is so handsome." Xu Jingjing looked at the neatly dressed Song Chengguang and complimented him.

"Auntie!" Song Chengguang, embarrassed by the praise, grabbed the hat on his head and shyly looked down, then both the elder and the younger exchanged glances and giggled together.

After all three of them were appropriately dressed, Xu Xiuxiu locked the house door. Even though they were on a military base and security was not a major concern, since they had keys and door locks, Xu Xiuxiu felt more at ease locking the door.

On the concrete path leading to the military wives’ headquarters, Xu Xiuxiu and Xu Jingjing stood on either side, with Song Chengguang in the middle, each holding a small hand and strolling contently.

"Si Ya, look, over there is the training ground for Company One, and even further away, I’ve heard there’s a shooting range." Although Xu Xiuxiu had never been to those places, she knew roughly what facilities were nearby. This military base was indeed a captivating place for some hot-blooded men.

Take Song Yuanhuan, for example. Even though he never said anything, every time Xu Xiuxiu saw him in his neat military uniform, she couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of pride, and to her, Song Yuanhuan in uniform also looked exceptionally handsome.

"A shooting range? So that’s like a firing range, right? Big sis, do they have real guns there?" Xu Jingjing’s eyes shone with a mix of fear and curiosity. Guns, oh! She had never seen one and was afraid of those lethal weapons. Back in the old village, she’d heard stories from some of the old revolutionaries and Red Army soldiers, which filled Xu Jingjing with curiosity about the military.

"They should have them!" Xu Xiuxiu actually didn’t understand much about it, but this was a military base. Although the shooting range mostly used blanks, real live fire exercises would occasionally take place, which was essential training. Otherwise, what would be the point of only knowing how to shoot blanks?

"Wow! If there’s a chance, big sis, could you have brother-in-law take me to see it? I really want to see what a real gun looks like." Xu Jingjing was so excited she was almost howling.

"If there’s a chance, I’ll ask your brother-in-law," Xu Xiuxiu said. She didn’t really like asking Song Yuanhuan to break the rules, but she could try to satisfy Xu Jingjing’s sincere desire, provided Song Yuanhuan agreed it wasn’t an issue.

"Thank you, big sis." Xu Jingjing let go of her little nephew’s hand, turned, and wrapped her arms around Xu Xiuxiu’s left arm, shaking it back and forth.

"I only said I would ask for you; I didn’t promise anything," Xu Xiuxiu said, unable to stand Xu Jingjing’s enthusiasm and worried the young girl might have misunderstood.

"I know, I know," Xu Jingjing said, nodding with a goofy smile.

Xu Xiuxiu didn’t say anything else and let Xu Jingjing hang off her arm as they continued walking. However, just as they were about to arrive at the military wives’ headquarters, Xiuxiu and the others were suddenly intercepted by the bizarre Lu Xiangxiang.

"Xu Xiuxiu, there’s something I need to talk to you about," Lu Xiangxiang said with a serious look.

"If you have something to say, then say it!" Xu Xiuxiu actually felt extremely uncomfortable every time she saw Lu Xiangxiang. The fact that she was entangled with this annoying person as soon as she returned to the Military District was simply bad luck. Xu Xiuxiu really found Lu Xiangxiang as disgusting as a buzzing mosquito that you couldn’t kill, but kept whining in your ear. If Xu Xiuxiu had the chance, she definitely wanted to squash this disgusting fly.

"Xu Xiuxiu, could you do me a favor?" Lu Xiangxiang asked gently.

A favor? Lu Xiangxiang actually wanted her help? Xu Xiuxiu didn’t believe in this nonsense: "First tell me what favor you want?" Lu Xiangxiang was such an oddball, asking her, Xu Xiuxiu, for a favor; it must be some sort of weird request!
