Chapter 99: 098 Three Obsession Antiques (4000)_1
Honk…
The Fortune Car honked gently as it turned into the street, its pale yellow light casting an oblique glow on one side of the road, causing a glaring reflection off a trash can.
With a soft splutter, the car wheels crushed a newspaper on the ground as the block-like black vehicle sped past.
In the passenger seat to the right, a fierce-faced youth sported a cigarette in his mouth, a handgun rested between his legs.
He exhaled a puff of smoke, his eyes slightly narrowed. This antique transportation task was important; any suspicious entities approaching the moving Fortune Car would be swiftly exterminated by the man.
“Huh?!”
In the driver’s seat, the man’s eyes suddenly widened.
Two massive headlights on the Fortune Car projected a large circle of yellow light, illuminating the darkness ahead.
At some unknown point, a tall silhouette had taken position right at the center of the zebra crossing, standing still as if a sculpture.
The car’s headlights cast a long, angled shadow of the figure, which squirmed and morphed as the light approached.
“Idiot!”
The man floored the accelerator, and the car roared forward. He picked up the handgun resting on his thigh, cocking the firearm.
Boom!!! Crash!!!
The man quickly raised his head, only to see a massive, pitch-black iron fist shattering the glass, enlarging rapidly in front of his eyes like an incoming shell.
Boom! Crash…
A head burst apart, spraying red and white brain matter, forming a fan shape that splattered against the back of the car, coating the recliner with a thick layer of the gruesome ‘sauce’.
Thud. The man collapsed onto the driver’s seat. He had no head left. The right hand he had just been trying to lift fell back down, the handgun dropped between his legs with a clatter.
“Are two men missing?”
Casio suddenly appeared out of the darkness, shaking his arm to get rid of the nauseating tomato sauce. Striding forward, he appeared instantaneously on the rear roof of the Fortune Car, pulling back the curtain with a stretch of his hand.
It was a vacant space, and there was no one guarding either side. On the truck’s floor were an array of antiques covered by a black cloth.
“Ran away?”
Casio quickly turned his head to look behind him. Beika Street was completely deserted. There were no pedestrians, not even the stray cat that had been sleeping on the trash can was there. It had run off. Confused, he walked back to the front of the vehicle, opened the car door, and threw the corpse of the Sand Dust Organization member to the side. Afterward, he started the vehicle and drove it into a secluded alleyway.
“Buzz buzz buzz…”
A Fortune Car with severe front hood damage came to a halt.
At the front of the car, a long, deep dent had resulted in a deformation of the metal. The positioning of the two headlights was a bit askew.
Click.
The driver’s door opened, and Casio strolled down from it. He glanced at his sturdy right leg; his muscles and skin were intact, but the pants from the knee to the root of his leg was tattered.
“Gonna need a new pair of casual pants tomorrow…”
Thinking this to himself, Casio then switched off the car lights.
He pulled back the curtain and made his way into the roof-top compartment of the Fortune Car.
Turning on a small flashlight, he lifted all the black cloth off the antiques. Immediately, a bitter taste suffused his mouth.
Casio’s eyes lit up, and a faint smile curled at the corners of his mouth. He extended his hand to touch and examine each of the antiques.
Soon, Casio found what he was looking for: three items in total — a large brass hanging clock, a landscape painting, and a miniature porcelain vase. An icy stream of energy slowly flowed into his arm, spreading throughout his body, making him feel like he was immersed in steam.
In the top right corner, the numbers began to jump.
‘Obsession Energy: 0.8→0.9→1.0…’
Although slow, its rise was steady. When Casio’s arm started to feel slightly stiff from the cold, the jumping of the Obsession Energy stooped. Casio looked again at the upper right corner of the car.
‘Obsession Energy: 2.4’
It had jumped by 1.6! Quite satisfying.

If Casio remembered correctly, just before the second retrospective occurred his Obsession Energy was at 2.3, now it was 0.1 higher. This might be sufficient for the third retrospective to occur, but there was a risk it could fail.
But considering the recent increase, it shouldn’t be far from the necessary number. Casio estimated that the energy required for the third retrospective was probably between 2.0 and 2.5.
It couldn’t be more than 2.5, that would be too high.
Exhaling a slow breath, Casio surveyed the numerous antiques within the vehicle, and suddenly he felt something was off. Where was the pocket watch? Wasn’t it inside? He promptly fetched the antiques catalogue from his pocket, comparing the objects in the vehicle with the ones in the book.
He quickly noticed that at least half the antiques were missing. This particular Fortune Car was only carrying half of them.
Connecting this to the information he had previously acquired, supposedly there were three people from the Sand Dust Organization transporting the antiques, but only one appeared.
Could it be that killing the Black Flame Gang leader yesterday had alarmed the snake — forcing the Sands Dust Organization to change their plan at the last minute?
Casio furrowed his brow. He wasn’t fond of digging deep into the relationships between events – he preferred to solve problems bluntly.
Immediately, a phrase jumped out in his mind.
“The Black Flame Gang.”
The Black Flame Gang had been secretly taken over by the Sand Dust Organization. If there was a change in the Organization, there was a high probability they would notify the Black Flame Gang. Even further, if the Black Flame Gang was the only underground force the Sand Dust Organization controlled in Baichuan City…
Perhaps the remaining antiques were with the Black Flame Gang.
Pian on Baichuan City belonged to the Black Spade in theory, so the Sand Dust Organization didn’t dare send too many members in openly; that would risk being discovered. Hence, the Black Flame Gang had become their white glove – or, more accurately, their black glove.
