Chapter 75: 074. Who are you talking to?_1
Watching Lu Ban’s vomit, Cui Siter at first couldn’t relate his next two sentences.
“Those two people have no heartbeat.”
Lu Ban took out a piece of paper from his pocket, wiped the corner of his mouth, and then explained.
“They are just like those monsters that look like fish—no heartbeat, no breath, nothing but walking corpses.”
“What about the servant?”
Thinking of how the three people were dressed almost identically, Cui Siter asked again.
“The servant has a heartbeat, albeit a strange rhythm, but he is alive,”
Lu Ban replied.
If the servant had no heartbeat, then Lu Ban would have noticed it when he saw the man last night, not just now when he informed Cui Siter.
“The ingredients of those meals are normal, but the taste is awful, as if made by someone who has no clue how to cook. The chef of this house is probably not human either.”
He added another line.
“So you asked for dinner to confirm all of this?”
Cui Siter suddenly felt that the man before him, apart from being a bit neurotic and having a peculiar way of thinking, was also quite bold and detail-oriented.
“No, I was really hungry,”
Lu Ban answered promptly.
He returned to the room, took out compressed rations from his bag, and devoured them with the mineral water he brought, eating ravenously.
“Man is iron, food is steel; how can one handle tomorrow’s wedding without a full stomach.”
“…As long as you’re happy,”
Cui Siter sat down on a chair and meticulously checked his revolver before sliding it back into its holster.
“Let’s summarize the current situation,”
“This town suffered from monster attacks many years ago, after which the monsters were sealed and there was peace for a while. But as the seal weakened, the monsters emerged to plague the world again, until the Hai Family arrived, and the monsters vanished without a trace.”
“The Black Queen Mother may be some higher being beyond humans, sealed within Hei Tower in the yard of the Hai Family, and her power can seep out, enticing others to release her.”
“In that case, could the Black Queen Mother be that monster that terrorized the seas before and is now sealed by the Hai Family People?”
“We shouldn’t concern ourselves too much with the Black Queen Mother; our target is the wedding. But now there seems to be a problem with the Hai Family People—their master is dead while the servant is still barely alive.”
He contemplated as he gently stroked his pipe.
Suddenly, Cui Siter realized that Lu Ban was gone.
The whole room fell into silence, with even his own breathing sounding clear.
“Lu Ban?”
Cui Siter called out, on alert.
There was no response.
He stood up and walked inside the house.
No lights were on in the room, and it was pitch black. Moonlight filtered through the tree shadows, casting an eerie gloom.
Cui Siter spotted a mirror; it stood in a strange place, directly opposite the folding screen as if meant to reveal every person entering the room.

He saw his own figure in the blurry mirror.
A very strange feeling.
Cui Siter sensed something different about his reflection in the mirror;
he crept closer, trying to get a clearer view.
That was when Cui Siter noticed his reflection’s pale face, with lips unusually red, just like the already deceased master of the Hai Family!
In the moment of realization, blood streamed from the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears of Cui Siter’s reflection in the mirror.
Cui Siter hastily retreated, only to see that behind his reflection in the mirror, stood a person.
The woman clad in a red wedding dress!
This time, the woman didn’t cover her face with red cloth but had lifted her veil.
One could see her delicate, pale face devoid of any color, and her deep red eyes, void of any whites, shedding bloody tears that complemented her crimson lips.
“Don’t go…”
A murmur rose close to his ear, and Cui Siter swiftly turned around, but found his revolver shot miss.
There was no one behind him.
Cold sweat seeped from Cui Siter’s forehead, and without noticing, the space around him became confined and dim, as if even the moonlight were being devoured.
Those vague, ambiguous shadows of trees, like figures twisted in posture, poised to strike in the corners.
“Save me…”
With this faint whisper, Cui Siter felt a chill at the back of his neck, as a moist, ice-cold breath carrying the metallic stench hit his neck, causing goosebumps all over his body.
He spun around, ready to fire his gun, but his fingers squeezed the trigger and it wouldn’t budge.
The trigger was as though frozen, immovable.
Cui Siter looked down to see a hand clutching his own that held the gun, fingers blocking the trigger from moving.
“Wake up.”
The voice of Lu Ban came from beside him, snapping Cui Siter to his senses.
Only then did he realize that his gun was pointed at his own head, and Lu Ban had reached out to block the trigger, preventing Cui Siter from ending his life.
“What did you see?”
Lu Ban gently took the handgun from Cui Siter’s hands, placing it on the table, and asked patiently.
“I saw her, the woman in red, just now in the room…”
Cui Siter’s voice was weak.
“No, you’ve been sitting here, motionless, until you grabbed the gun and aimed it at your own head.”
Lu Ban still held the half-eaten compressed ration in his hand.
“You must be starved. Eat some rations to calm down.”
Lu Ban passed his half-eaten rations to Cui Siter.
Cui Siter blankly accepted the rations, seemingly still immersed in what he had just experienced, until he took a couple of bites and realized something was amiss, and then he quickly looked at Lu Ban.
“This is what you’ve eaten!”
“It’s fine, I don’t mind.”
Lu Ban patted his chest.
“This house has serious problems. I suspect that woman is the Black Queen Mother. She subtly influences the consciousness of those around her, driving them insane.”
Cui Siter said fearfully.
“The Hai Family have lived with the Black Queen Mother for so long, they are probably not normal anymore…”
Cui Siter suspected that the mere sight of the bride and groom during the wedding they witnessed could be enough to lose control of one’s sanity.
“These people have either turned into the monsters walking like dead men in last night’s fog, or into the monsters with fish-headed human bodies; even that servant might be a disguise, controlling the Hai Family’s master and mistress to receive us.”
To the Hai Family People, hosting the wedding was all that mattered. As for Lu Ban and Cui Siter, they were likely just unstable elements that needed to be handled appropriately, nothing more.
“If we stay here tonight, even if the Hai Family People don’t plan to harm us, the will of the Black Queen Mother will influence us.”
Cui Siter felt their situation was extremely dangerous.
“She says it’s okay.”
But suddenly, Ke Luban spoke up.
“What did you say?”
Cui Siter felt a strange sense of eeriness as Lu Ban’s gaze was not on him, but rather on the empty chair beside them.
“She says she won’t harm us.”
Lu Ban repeated.
“Who are you talking to…”
The hairs on Cui Siter’s back stood up. He didn’t dare to make any sudden moves, just shifting slightly to the side.
“The bride.”
Lu Ban pointed to the empty chair.
At that moment, in the chair, in Lu Ban’s view, sat a woman in a red wedding dress.
Her complexion was pale, her lips a deep red, her eyes saturated with blood without a hint of white, with streams of blood tears running down her cheeks from her eyes.
She just sat there as if she had been there for hundreds of years.
