Chapter 1324: Chapter 1324: Inquiry

Julius Reed did not leave.

Assassinating the Marshal, eliminating Deep Cold, deterring the underground world, helping The North Sea make enemies.

That was just one of the goals.

There was another matter.

Even more important than all of those combined.

The Marshal had controlled the underground world for many years, holding many resources and secrets in his hands.

One of these secrets, Julius Reed had only recently come to know of.

After the gunfire, Deep Cold’s headquarters castle was in shambles.

Many buildings had collapsed, a small part remained intact.

Some people in the castle died under the gunfire, some followed the Marshal in the front courtyard.

Even more were on the outside of the castle, waiting in strict formation.

So much so that when Julius Reed reached the entrance to the basement, he encountered no resistance.

The door to the basement was still open.

It was very likely that Ragweed King was too hasty with the bombardment and didn’t manage to close it.

But inside it was pitch black.

A fierce wind was sweeping in snowstorms, relentlessly pouring inside.

He walked in for a full two minutes before he started to feel a bit of warmth.

Pitch black.

He guessed that the bombardment inadvertently hit the castle’s power and heating systems, causing not only a power outage in the basement but even the temperature to drop rapidly.

The basement was so dark that he couldn’t see his hand in front of his face.

Julius Reed, by his perception, walked along the corridor inside the basement.

All of a sudden!

He sidestepped to dodge!

Bang!

A bullet whizzed past, hitting right next to him on the wall!

At the moment the gunfire flared, Julius Reed swiftly drew his sword!

He hurled it forward!

The bone sword had no luster, no nether flame; it merged directly into the darkness.

Thud!

Along with the sound of a body being pierced, something heavy fell in the corridor.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Julius Reed rushed forward quickly, and as he passed the corpse, he yanked his right hand fiercely!

Directly grabbing the Hell Sword in his grasp!

The next moment.

Whoosh!

Evil Qi entered the sword!

The Hell Sword flared up like a torch, illuminating what lay ahead.

Not far away, several Assassins were holding guns, their eyes filled with unease.

"Just let us go this once," one of them trembled as he spoke, still aiming his weapon at Julius Reed.

Through the pale blue flame, Julius Reed noticed there were about a dozen people standing in front of him.

"Have you ever killed innocent people?"

He asked aloud.

"No... no," someone spoke up: "We are innocent."

"Innocent?"

Julius Reed chuckled and shook his head: "There isn’t a single innocent person in this castle."

The moment his words fell, the Hell Sword in his hand was fiercely thrown forward!

Suddenly, gunshots rang out in the corridor.

Julius Reed leapt up, his whole body sticking to the top of the corridor.

As the Hell Sword touched the bodies of those people, it immediately burst into raging flames.

In the darkness, burning figures wailed before ultimately quieting down.

The Hell Sword, drained of Evil Qi, became somewhat dim.

"Is Mr. Smith second here?"

Julius Reed picked up the Hell Sword, groping around in the corridor.

Finally, he found a backup power source in a corner.

Click!

The moment the light turned on.

He was stunned!

In front of him, there were cages.

The people inside were staring with wide eyes, looking at themselves.

They were young and old alike.

Oddly shaped, with ugly features.

The majority of them bore scars all over their bodies, their eyes filled with murderous intent!

When the light came on, many of them covered their eyes and, like roaring lions, gripped the sturdy rebars with both hands, bellowing.

These people were all strongmen from the underground world, many of whom had opposed Deep Cold, or been captured, and forced to swear fealty to the Marshal.

Or been imprisoned, confined in this place devoid of sunlight.

Among them, many strongmen were feared not just for their fighting skills, but likely because they held secrets in their mouths.

"Is Mr. Smith second here?"

Julius Reed spoke up once again.

"I am Mr. Smith second." Finally, amidst the roars and curses in various languages,

an elder spoke out.

His voice was faint, but Julius Reed noticed it.

Following the voice, Julius Reed walked up to a cage.

The elder’s cage was visibly smaller than the others’.

And it appeared that the elder didn’t have much longer to live.

He could die at any moment.

"Mr. Smith second? The follower of the Vein Holder who suffered a defeat?" Standing before the cage, Julius Reed looked at the elder who was on his last breath.

"You are..." Hearing the words ’defeated’ the elder’s cloudy eyes suddenly sparked with lucidity!

He abruptly stood up, unable to stop coughing.

"Stay calm, I have something to ask you," Julius Reed spoke indifferently.

Upon hearing this, the elder sat back down in the cell, bitterly smiling, "I foolishly waited for my master to come and save me..."

"You’ll never get that chance."

Julius Reed coldly interrupted him, calmly speaking: "Defeated, has already been hunted by Leander Sylvan, forced into hiding in Swimming City. I’m afraid..."

"Leander Sylvan..." Hearing this name, the elder clenched his fists with all his might, hatred flaming in his eyes!

"Despicable! The woman’s heart is the most poisonous! Leander Sylvan, you will receive your retribution!"

He breathed heavily, his intense emotions triggering another coughing fit.

"I heard you once stayed at Bead Pulse for a while, knowing quite a few secrets." Julius Reed looked at Mr. Smith second, who was clad in tattered white cloth with blood stains, and sighed, "Help me, and I will help you find Defeated."

"Really? You... you’re not one of Leander Sylvan’s?" Mr. Smith second was a bit excited.

His pale beard had grown long; he seemed to have been imprisoned here for a very long time.

"If I were Leander Sylvan’s man, I would have killed you with a sword by now." Julius Reed pointed at the bone sword on his waist: "Yet here I am talking to you."

"How can I help..." Mr. Smith second’s cough grew more severe.

Julius Reed knew medicine and immediately diagnosed the old man’s problem.

"Poisoned?" he asked.

"Correct, the Marshal poisoned me to pry my mouth open..." Mr. Smith second waved his hand and moved wearily to the front of the cell, smiling bitterly, "My time is short, please speak quickly. But how can a man on his deathbed help you?"

"I ask, you answer!"

Julius Reed took a deep breath and said: "When did Leander Sylvan return to Bead Pulse?"

"Four years ago."

Mr. Smith second began, "Is that your question?"

He thought the other party would ask for some secret.

"Good, second question, has Leander Sylvan ever been at Thunderpeak Hall?"

Julius Reed asked again.

His heart suddenly started racing.

For an ancient being that had lived countless times, this was simply inconceivable.

Perhaps these four years of ordinary life had made him a bit...

"Leander Sylvan... she had a brief stay at Thunderpeak Hall, but later, she was always in the mountains. There lies the true location of Bead Pulse, and also where countless sects converge." Mr. Smith second answered truthfully.

"Good! I’ll ask you one last question!"

Julius Reed’s fists clenched unnaturally, then slowly unfurled.

"I ask you... four years ago, did Thunderpeak Hall try to kill Leander Sylvan..."

He recalled a conversation he had with Armand Carmichael in the capital.

This old man had witnessed Leander Sylvan hiding in a garbage truck to evade Thunderpeak Hall’s pursuit!

If...

Leander Sylvan was coerced...

"Yes." Mr. Smith second said with some astonishment, "How did you know?"

"Was it Thunderpeak Hall that coerced Leander Sylvan? Otherwise, why would Leander Sylvan be hunted? Thunderpeak Hall is Bead Pulse’s own!" Julius Reed exhaled relievedly.

Isabella Warm might not have betrayed him after all.

"Back then, Thunderpeak Hall was still under the Imperial Pulse... It was the Imperial Pulse that ordered the pursuit of Leander Sylvan." After Mr. Smith second finished speaking, Julius Reed felt a bit dizzy.

He looked up at the light.

How come the light, too, had dimmed?
