Sunday, 5:30 PM, inside the apartment rented by Luo An Greenwood.

The voice on the phone was very familiar to Luo An; it was the voice of Group Leader Owen, with whom Luo An had previously worked on the "First Lady Bombing Case" (Chapter 225).

When he first arrived in Los Angeles, Luo An had greeted Group Leader Owen and received a lot of help from him while handling the "Eight Teenagers' Corpses Case."

Having recently cooperated, Group Leader Owen was very friendly towards Luo An, extending multiple invitations to have dinner at his home.

Thus, hearing the sound of gunfire over the phone and Group Leader Owen asking for help, Luo An did not hesitate to immediately rise from the couch and quickly run out of the apartment:

"Where are you? I'll call for backup right now!"

Bang!

Before Group Leader Owen could answer his question, another gunshot followed by the sound of the phone dropping to the ground, and someone collapsing, came from the other side of the call.

"Fu-k!"

Luo An's expression changed instantly, and he slapped the SUV hard, but his voice was low as he cursed because the call hadn't been disconnected; the movements of the murderer could perhaps still be heard.

Inside the unnaturally silent SUV, Luo An was solemn and listened carefully to the noises coming from the other end of the phone.

A rustling of footsteps, followed by the sound of searching a body, then the phone was picked up, paused for a few seconds, and was abruptly disconnected.

Hearing the busy tone on the phone, a cold light flickered in Luo An's eyes.

There were only footsteps of one person on the phone, yet the previous gunshots were certainly not made by a single shooter.

Plus, the hesitation before the phone was hung up suggested that the person who picked it up was asking their accomplice what to do, indicating that at least two people were involved in murdering Group Leader Owen.

Driving the SUV rapidly through the streets, Luo An briefly pondered amidst the traffic ahead, a glint of brilliance flickered in his eyes, and he switched the phone screen to call his supervisor, Potante Byrne.

The call was connected quickly:

"This is Potante Byrne."

"Chief, it's me, Luo An."

Luo An spoke gravely:

"I fear that Group Leader Owen from the Special Investigation Team number two may have been murdered."

"What did you say? Are you sure?"

Startled by the news, Potante Byrne urgently asked:

"When? Where?"

"Group Leader Owen just called me, and there were sounds of gunfire over the phone."

Luo An briefly described the recent events and spoke sternly:

"The event just happened, and the location is still unknown."

"Son of a bitch!"

Potante Byrne, furious, directly said:

"I'm contacting the LAPD right now, and we will locate Group Leader Owen in the shortest possible time!"

As soon as he finished talking, without waiting for a reply from Luo An, Potante Byrne hung up the phone.

Hearing the busy tone, Luo An licked his lips, seemingly lost in thought, then after a moment, called Mona.

Mona and Reesi had gone shopping on the streets of Los Angeles this afternoon and hadn't returned yet.

"It's me, Mona."

The call was quickly answered; Mona, carrying a bunch of newly purchased clothes, asked with a smile:

"What's up? Luo An, do you want me to bring you something to eat on my way back?"

"Sorry, Mona, an emergency has occurred."

Luo An maneuvered the steering wheel to overtake several cars and spoke seriously:

"Group Leader Owen from the Special Investigation Team number two was likely just killed. You and Reesi hurry back to the Special Investigation Team and try to secretly get a copy of the most recent work content from Group Leader Owen."

"What?"

Mona's pupils contracted as she was filled with shock, but she immediately agreed:

"No problem, we'll head back right away."

"And don't forget to call Michelle."

Luo An furrowed his brow and added:

"She might be able to offer you some help."

"OK."

————

6 PM, a certain dock in the southwest of Los Angeles.

Luo An wasn't the first to arrive at the scene. By the time he drove here, the police tape had already been erected, and nearly ten LAPD patrol officers were controlling the area.

Pulling out his FBI gold badge to show his identity, Luo An lifted the police tape to enter the inner area and started observing the crime scene.

A silver Camry was parked next to a container; Luo An recognized the car as Group Leader Owen's personal vehicle.

Group Leader Owen was lying outside the driver's seat door, with the passenger door open. Luo An walked over to his side and found Group Leader Owen with a bullet wound in his right temple; the sight was too gruesome to bear.

"Hello, I'm Chief James."

As Luo An bent down, preparing to look for further details at the scene, a middle-aged white man with a big beard suddenly approached.

Seeing the hand extended towards him, Luo An stopped what he was doing and reached out to shake hands:

"Luo An Greenwood."

"I know you, the deputy leader of the FBI Special Investigation Team."

After shaking hands with Luo An, Chief James went straight to the point:

"The LAPD chief just called me and requested we cooperate with you."

The murder of an FBI team leader was a major case that hadn't occurred in Los Angeles for a long time, and Chief James really couldn't fathom who would be bold enough to do this.

"Thank you."

Luo An, upon hearing this, didn't waste words and immediately asked:

"Have you canvassed the nearby area?"

"One of the dock's security guards heard the gunshot."

Chief James took a deep breath, turned around, and led Luo An to a place nearby, saying:

"But the chief asked us to cooperate with you, so we have paused our questioning."

Luo An glanced at Chief James without saying anything and walked over to the dock security guard to inquire:

"Can you tell me what you saw?"

The dock security guard was a very thin white man, looked to be in his fifties, with a service pistol strapped to his waist.

Upon hearing Luo An's question, he answered:

"I was patrolling the other side of the dock at the time. I rushed here as soon as I heard the gunshot, but I didn't see anyone." fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Luo An frowned slightly and continued to inquire:

"What about the dock's surveillance?"

"It's been broken for half a year."

The security guard made a face:

"Some homeless people come here to steal things, and they always damage the surveillance equipment.

After it was broken for the umpteenth time, the Los Angeles government stopped sending people to fix it. It's just me patrolling at night.

I'm doing the work of four people by myself, and yet they don't give me a raise..."

Luo An continued to ask the security guard several questions, but didn't obtain any useful leads, and then temporarily let him leave.

At this time, the agents from the trace evidence department and the second investigation team arrived at the scene; Luo An shook hands with the lead agent and handed over the crime scene to them.

The faces of the agents from the second investigation team were all very grim, with several female agents covering their mouths and weeping.

Just then, Luo An's phone suddenly rang. Pulling out his phone, he saw that it was a call from Reesi.

"It's me, Luo An, have you found any leads?"

"Mona just made contact with Group Leader Owen's wife."

Reesi on the other end of the phone said:

"I've already sent an agent to meet her. She will arrive at our office area in twenty minutes. Do you want to come back and ask her some questions?"

"OK, I'll head back right now."

With the scene in the hands of the evidence technicians, there wasn't much for Luo An to do, so it was better to head back to the office.

Fifteen minutes later, Luo An returned to the Special Investigation Team office area.

Mona, Reesi, and Michelle were busy at their respective computers.

"You're back just in time, Luo An."

Seeing Luo An push the door and enter the office area, Mona immediately raised her hand to greet him:

"I've discovered a small situation over here."
