Chapter 17 - 17: The Twelve Bronze Zodiac Shall Reunite!
Zhang Yang followed them down to the first floor. The entrance to the underground vault was hidden inside a room at the end of the corridor.
After Charles and Brant stepped inside, Zhang Yang leaned casually against the doorframe and started counting.
"Fifty-eight... fifty-nine... sixty!"
One minute later, Zhang Yang pulled out a wire, easily picked the lock, and stepped into the room.
By now, Charles and Brant were already in front of the vault door deep inside the underground bunker. As soon as they heard the door creak open, both of them tensed up, ears straining to catch any sound.
Zhang Yang's footsteps echoed through the vault corridor until he appeared right in front of them.
Charles's face darkened, glaring at him. "How did you get in here?"
His brain was clearly fried at this point—asking such a dumb question was perfectly understandable.
Zhang Yang chuckled and stopped a few feet away from them.
"Obviously, you two brought me in yourselves."
Behind Charles and Brant stood the massive vault door. It looked extremely thick and sturdy, with a mechanical locking system that had three separate combination dials—one small, one medium, and one large.
"The Snake Head should be inside here, right?" Zhang Yang asked with a grin.
"You... you're after the Snake Head?!"
Charles looked stunned, not knowing how Zhang Yang had discovered that secret.
But right now, he was absolutely panicking.
Charles turned around to glance at the vault. His expression couldn't have been uglier.
They'd gone through all this trouble, made all these plans to capture Zhang Yang...
And in the end, they were the ones who brought him to the treasure.
"What else would I be after?" Zhang Yang said, smiling faintly as he flicked his wrist.
A fan of ten red playing cards appeared in his hand.
"Of course, I can't just take it without saying thank you. Allow me to show you a magic trick."
He shuffled the cards one-handed, flipping and fanning them skillfully. Then, with a flick of his wrist, the cards flew into the air—transforming into a flurry of crimson petals drifting down like snow.
As Charles and Brant reflexively looked up at the petals, Zhang Yang raised his hand and sprinkled a fine mist of Sleep Powder.
Brant was the first to react, pointing at him with trembling rage. "You're using... using that again..."
But before he could finish his sentence, his knees buckled.
Charles and Brant collapsed at nearly the same time, falling fast asleep on the floor.
Zhang Yang stepped over them and walked straight up to the vault.
There were three combination dials—large, medium, and small.
[Ding!]
[Please begin turning the mechanical dial slowly.]
Zhang Yang placed both hands on the largest dial and started turning it slowly.
A steady clack-clack sound echoed from inside the vault door.
[Ding!]
[Stop turning. Now adjust the second mechanical dial.]
Following the system's prompts, Zhang Yang spun each of the three dials in order.
Then came the code.
[Ding!]
[Vault combination: 193564]
Each dial had two digits, totaling six numbers.
Zhang Yang entered the code, matching each dial to its designated number. A heavy ka-chunk sounded from within the vault.
With a deep groan, the massive steel door slowly opened.
And there it was—placed prominently on the central pedestal—a legendary national treasure from the Dragon Nation: one of the Twelve Bronze Zodiac.
The Snake Head.
Charles knew exactly how valuable the Snake Head was, which is why he had placed it right here—in the most secure room, dead center of the vault.
There were many other artifacts inside, but Zhang Yang didn't even bother to look.
The reason was simple: he was now carrying the name of Kaitō Kid.
So naturally, his methods had to live up to the style of the real Kaitō Kid.
He stashed the Snake Head into his magician's storage space and turned to leave the vault.
Before exiting the bunker, Zhang Yang used his Advanced Disguise Technique to transform into Charles.
And while he was at it, he stripped off Charles's custom-tailored designer suit.
After all, buying an outfit from the system store cost eight hundred points—and here he had a perfectly good one, top-tier and tailor-made, right at his feet.
Once everything was ready, Zhang Yang finally left the underground vault.
Then, with a confident stride, he walked straight out of Swan Lake Castle.
At that moment, Kelly, Carl, and the team of elite security guards were still cluelessly combing the upper floors!
Zhang Yang didn't linger. He quickly left the Swan Lake estate behind.
Even though Zhang Yang was long gone, Kelly, Carl, and Stanley—along with the elite security—were still searching non-stop.
They'd scoured the entire castle for over an hour, going through it at least three times!
Forget Zhang Yang—not even a mouse turned up.
Eventually, Kelly couldn't take it anymore.
"Fuck! What the hell is Kaitō Kid even trying to do?!"
He was so frustrated he was ready to shoot himself just to end it.
They'd been searching nonstop since that afternoon.

At first, they thought the figure on the wall was Kaitō Kid. Kelly fired without hesitation—only to find out it was another damn dummy!
Then they kept searching through the castle, and now he was on the verge of a breakdown.
Carl also realized this wasn't working.
"Let's find Brant. We need a new plan."
Kelly took out his phone and tried calling Brant, but no one picked up.
The underground vault was soundproofed extremely well. Once that door was closed, not even a whisper could get out.
"No one's answering!"
Just then, Stanley walked over with another squad of guards.
Seeing that Kelly and Carl had paused their search, Stanley also stopped beside them to catch his breath for a moment.
"Hey, where's your boss? And Brant?" Kelly asked.
"No idea," Stanley replied, shaking his head.
That was when he realized—he hadn't seen Charles in quite a while either.
His face changed, and he quickly tried calling Charles.
Same result as Kelly. The call went through, but no one answered.
Kelly and Carl exchanged a look. Both their calls going unanswered wasn't a coincidence anymore.
The three of them immediately went downstairs to search. Nothing on the first floor.
Stanley ran outside and grabbed one of the elite guards stationed there. "Where's Mr. Charles?"
Earlier, when Zhang Yang left, he didn't bother avoiding anyone.
So the guard had seen "Charles" walk out.
"Mr. Charles already left the premises," the guard replied.
Stanley frowned. "Left? When did he leave?"
The guard looked down at his watch.
What he'd seen was Zhang Yang in disguise. Meanwhile, Stanley and the others had been focused entirely on the search inside and hadn't paid any attention to what was happening outside.
Kelly stepped forward and asked, "What about Brant?"
The guard shook his head.
"I didn't see Mr. Brant. Just Mr. Charles leaving alone."
"Left alone?"
Stanley was puzzled. Charles always informed him before going anywhere.
Especially now, when they were in the middle of trying to capture Kaitō Kid!
Could something have happened?
Kelly tried calling Brant again. Still no answer.
Now Stanley was getting nervous.
Catching Kaitō Kid didn't matter anymore—finding Charles was the priority.
If Kaitō Kid stole a random artifact from the castle, the worst-case scenario was a scolding.
But if something happened to Charles, Stanley was finished.
He tried calling Charles again. No answer.
Just as he was about to try calling someone else, Kelly reached out to stop him.
"Look at this!"
On Kelly's screen was Zhang Yang's latest post.
"The Twelve Bronze Zodiac shall reunite!"
Attached below was a photo of the Snake Head.
The post had gone up ten minutes ago.
Zhang Yang had already returned home ten minutes ago.
Stanley didn't care what Kaitō Kid had stolen anymore. He just had to find Charles—now—and confirm that he was safe.
Kelly and Carl exchanged another glance and quietly stepped away to call Bob.
