Love Affairs in Melbourne-Chapter 38 - 37 Whatever You Say is Right
Chapter 38: Chapter 37 Whatever You Say is Right
Yi had finished speaking and continued to pose triumphantly, flaunting Yan Yan’s hand.
Seeing Yan Yan ready to speak, Yi grabbed her other hand too:
"Don’t tell me you only have one hand. Look, both your hands are now firmly in my grasp."
"Do you really have to be like this? You have to leave some room for others to talk. I haven’t even spoken, and you guessed my next line. What’s the point of that?" Yan Yan was slightly frustrated.
Whenever Yi prepared his arguments like he was in a debate, Yan Yan never could gain the upper hand.
"For other things, I may not guess, but for a matter of principle like this, I definitely won’t budge an inch," Yi said, appeasingly looking at Yan Yan.
Yi didn’t want to see Yan Yan looking frustrated, but if it meant she would become his girlfriend, he wouldn’t compromise even a little bit.
"Alright, you’re handsome, whatever you say is right," Yan Yan decided to concede.
For someone who came all the way to Melbourne and was leaving soon, letting him win didn’t cost her anything.
Since high school, Yan Yan had loved watching Yi speak earnestly; his clarity in thought and pleasant voice.
"City Circle Tram will introduce nearby attractions or landmarks at each station. Tell me if you hear something nice, something you want to see, and I’ll take you there," Yan Yan said, taking Yi on the tram.
In the sixties and seventies of the last century, many large cities dismantled their tram tracks, but Melbourne not only retained theirs, but also expanded them.
The City Circle Tram uses the old-fashioned tram cars, similar to those of tram restaurants, particularly vintage.
Besides, other regularly operating trams have already been upgraded to very modern models.
"Thanks, master, for this generous stroll," Yi responded with a smile.
Yi wouldn’t mind letting Yan Yan have the upper hand on non-principal matters.
Besides, they had many more issues to face together in the future.
Before seriously discussing the future, before carefully considering the path ahead, and while they could still joyfully spend time without reservations, they absolutely needed to make the most of every minute.
Yi and Yan Yan were generally rational in matters of the heart.
They weren’t the type to make rash decisions to be together regardless of the consequences, like they did today.
Even if it’s five years, changes happen even to those who are together every day, let alone for Yi and Yan Yan, who haven’t spoken for five years.
And four years without any communication at all.
Human nature is complex, most people are paradoxes in themselves.
The more one considers oneself rational in love, the more likely they are to eventually meet someone who makes them lose all reason.
Rationality is always a relative concept.
...
Yi and Yan Yan, hand in hand, sat on the tram where the free service had many stops, and the announcements almost continuously described important buildings and landmarks along the way.
After each announcement, Yi would ask, "This place sounds nice, have you been there before?"
As they passed landmarks like Parliament House, Federation Square, and Melbourne Aquarium which Yan Yan hadn’t shown Yi yet, he would ask each time.
He asked again when they announced Flinders Street Station and Southern Cross Station, which were major transport hubs. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Even as the tram passed the State Library and Melbourne Central Station, which they had just visited that morning, Yi still had to ask again.
Each time, Yan Yan would give the same two-word response: "Been there."
After hearing this, Yi would then decide, "Then we won’t get off here since you’ve been there before."
Eventually, Yan Yan couldn’t stand it anymore and questioned Yi, "You just said you wanted to see Melbourne’s sights, right? How can you see anything if you’re not even willing to get off the tram?"
"I want to go somewhere you haven’t been, to create a memory in Melbourne that’s just for us," Yi explained his reasoning.
"Why do you suddenly come up with a new rationale every minute?" Yan Yan looked incredulously at Yi, whose mentality seemed childlike.
"I’m handsome, so whatever I say is right," Yi retorted matter-of-factly, using Yan Yan’s earlier taunt against her.
"Uh, I have no comeback for that," Yan Yan, having said the words herself, found it difficult to contradict.
Yi turned to Yan Yan and the hand he was holding, barely concealing his smug expression.
"But Yi, why has your IQ suddenly reset to zero? Couldn’t you have just asked which places I haven’t been to along the way instead of asking one by one? Isn’t that tiring?" Yan Yan asked irritably.
"I just like asking one by one, slowly finding out—is that okay?" Yi’s tone sounded somewhat coquettish.
"It’s fine, but I’ve lived in the city area for so long, don’t you think it’s very likely that there’s no place I haven’t visited? Look, we’ve even reached the end of the line now. Melbourne’s City Circle Tram isn’t really a circular route; they run clockwise and counter-clockwise. Are you planning to ride it again?" Yan Yan seriously answered Yi’s question but slightly missed the point.
Faced with today’s particularly "lively and adorable" Yi, Yan Yan could only respond in a "serious and sincere" manner.
"What are we eating tonight?" Yi quickly shifted to a new topic, making it hard for Yan Yan to continue being serious.
"I don’t know what to eat..." Yan Yan didn’t respond with the excitement Yi had expected.
"Ah? Am I hearing things?" Yi couldn’t quite believe his ears.
Yan Yan’s demeanor was nothing like someone who, for the past two days, lit up at the mention of food.
"You heard right, I didn’t plan to take you anywhere to eat tonight. Bao Bao and Shen Xi said yesterday they’re treating us to dinner tonight to meticulously gauge your character. Then tomorrow, they’d let us two go dine in the tram restaurant to ’conspire together’. But now you’re leaving soon, and I don’t know what to do about dinner." Yan Yan felt it was somewhat inappropriate to have Yi, just about to catch his flight, undergo a "family inspection."
Why must life always face farewells?
If everything were like a fairy tale, summarized with "the prince and princess lived happily ever after"... how wonderful would that be?
