Chapter 24 - The buzz cut is gone

The wild boar remained in its previous position, but for some inexplicable reason, An Nan had ended up positioned slightly forward, now riding on the boar's back.

Furious, the wild boar bucked and twisted, trying to shake her off.

She clung tightly to its round, muscular body. If she were thrown off and collided with the ground, her ribs would surely snap.

But staying mounted on it wasn't an option either...

An Nan, embarrassed, suddenly understood the meaning of the saying "riding a tiger is hard to get off."

The boar, becoming more enraged by the fact that a two-legged creature dared to ride it, jumped even harder.

In a desperate move, An Nan raised the trident knife and drove it into the boar's eye.

The boar screamed in pain, thrashing wildly as it shook its body.

An Nan was thrown off, quickly rolling to the side to avoid the boar's rampage. She glanced over and saw the trident still lodged in its eye, unmoved.

Blinded, relying on its sense of smell and instincts, the boar charged straight for An Nan.

Without hesitation, she retrieved an Uzi submachine gun from her space and unleashed a barrage of bullets.

As the wild boar neared her feet, it collapsed with a thunderous crash, convulsing for a moment before it finally stopped moving.

An Nan let out a sigh of relief and pulled Fu Gui out of the space.

As soon as Fu Gui emerged, it rushed to An Nan, licking her hands and wagging its tail in relief. Then, it turned its attention to the fallen boar.

Another round of starry-eyed admiration: "Sis, you're amazing!"

An Nan laughed, patting Fu Gui's head as she stood up. As she began to dissect the wild boar, she reflected, "This thing really has tough skin and dense meat—most knives couldn't even pierce it."

Without the submachine gun, it would have been a fierce battle. There would certainly have been injuries. How could she have escaped so easily and unscathed?

Once again, she silently thanked the unknown benefactor who had provided her with such powerful weapons!

Skinning the wild boar was no easy task, and An Nan spent a while before the meat was properly prepared. Unlike domesticated pigs, this wild boar had firm muscles and very little fat.

Once she got home, she'd check if there were any special ways to cook it.

After finishing the boar, she returned to the unfinished sheep carcasses.

Out of the two hundred sheep, she had only processed a few dozen, and with nightfall approaching, she decided to rest and continue tomorrow.

The next few days were spent with An Nan and Fu Gui thoroughly exploring the mountain.

They found four donkeys, which would be perfect for making donkey meat dumplings, and thirty deliciously crispy roasted ducks—well, thirty adorable little ducks.

Along the way, they encountered another wild boar, which she dealt with as usual using the submachine gun.

Aside from that, they encountered little danger, likely due to the proximity to the city, where there were no large predators like lions or tigers, just some dangerous snakes. But with the arsenic powder she had applied, the snakes kept their distance.

For four full days, An Nan and Fu Gui stayed on the mountain, collecting two hundred and sixteen sheep, thirty-eight cattle, four donkeys, eighteen chickens, thirty-three ducks, forty-two rabbits, and two wild boars.

Without Fu Gui's keen sense of smell, An Nan would never have been able to gather so many animals.

Almost everything was stored in her space, except for a few foxes and weasels. She had never eaten such exotic meats and respected the folklore surrounding them. More importantly, the amount of meat in her space was more than enough to keep her and Fu Gui well-fed for a lifetime.

Who needed to hunt those creatures when she had so much meat already?

In case one of them suddenly stood up and asked, "Am I human or divine?" What would she do?

In the past, she never believed in such things, but after the apocalypse and her rebirth, she knew strange things could happen at any time.

Someone could tell her that the world she was living in was actually a novel, and she would believe it.

The world was vast and full of wonders.

Having processed most of the livestock, An Nan realized there were still over a hundred sheep to be dealt with. However, she decided it was time to head home.

There were no more valuable resources in the mountains, and staying out too long could lead to her neighbors raiding her home.

So, on the fourth afternoon, she called Fu Gui and prepared to descend the mountain.

Fu Gui had enjoyed the freedom of the mountains so much over the past few days, but now that they were leaving, it hesitated, standing still and gazing at An Nan.

An Nan laughed at it. "Did you sleep well these last few days? Don't you miss your warm and cozy bed at home?"

Fu Gui blinked, suddenly remembering its soft, comfy bed at home, and its little pink nest.

With a serious expression, it immediately darted down the mountain.

Home! No treasure is more valuable than a dog's bed. I haven't slept in days!

Together, they quickly descended the mountain and started the inflatable boat to leave.

A group of foxes on the mountain quietly watched as they disappeared into the distance.

Finally, those two bandits were leaving.

If they didn't leave soon, they might clear out the whole mountain!

Once outside Guangcheng District, An Nan stowed Fu Gui back in her backpack.

Passing through Zhongguan District's office buildings, she saw that the once-glorious area was now in ruins. Half the buildings were submerged, and almost every window had been violently shattered.

At a glance, the city appeared as a wasteland.

Once-important business secrets and contract documents were now floating on the water's surface like discarded paper.

Gone were the well-dressed office workers, walking around with iced Americanos.

There were no more KPIs, no more UGCs, no more digital economies.

Only the cold floodwaters remained, along with people driven mad by hunger.

As night fell, An Nan quickened her pace to return home. In these turbulent times, darkness brought even more danger.

When she arrived home, her neighbors had just returned and were crowded in the hallway.

She stopped outside. After several days, they had lost even more weight.

Their faces were grim.

"How pitiful. She's pregnant, and now her husband's gone. How will she survive?"

"She has no one to blame but herself. So proud and competitive, collecting all those supplies. She didn't even know her husband drowned in the flood."

"Shh, don't say anything. She looks like she's about to snap."

A group of people whispered among themselves, their eyes frequently flicking toward the last person left—Chu Peipei.

From outside the window, An Nan overheard their conversation, realizing who they were talking about.

It was the buzz cut.

She couldn't help but glance toward Sun Peng, the man who had been caught revealing his wife's murder secret.

Sun Peng, hiding among the crowd, initially said nothing. Then, he approached Chu Peipei with a face full of false sympathy.

"Little sister, death cannot be undone. Be strong, alright?"
