Magus Bloodlines.-Chapter 42: Necromancy Magic
Chapter 42 - Necromancy Magic
Gavin spent the next few weeks deep diving into the principles of advanced magical use. The demonstration by Professor OKeeba opened his mind to all kinds of possibilities. The others didn't see Gavin much during this time. He spent most of his hours away, secluded in the library when class wasn't in session. This served two purposes. It let him research different magical principles, skills, and unique abilities as much as he wanted, with little interruption. He also found some peace and quiet from random students trying to talk to him on campus.
Erza kept by his side when he was in the library. She worked hard to organize his notes and books by subject. She also helped him stay focused on the topics he wanted to research. Gavin set up a cozy spot in the library with the help of a sweet old lady librarian. They could return there each time and continue from where they stopped the night before.
"Hello, Mrs. Dobson," Erza said to the kind lady at the library's main counter, with Gavin standing right behind her. He offered her a friendly smile, happy to see her.
Mrs. Dobson looked up from the computer screen upon hearing Erza's friendly greeting. "Erza, Gavin, welcome back." Her voice was warm and delighted as she greeted the two students. "Your corner remains untouched. Feel free to go back to your project," said Mrs. Dobson.
Gavin waved at her as he said, "Yes, ma'am. We will make sure to stay quiet." Gavin respected the old woman. He didn't want to risk being banned or getting in trouble. Losing access to all the material he was learning was not worth it.
He took Erza's hand and rushed to their back corner. Piles of books, tablets, and scrolls covered several tables. It looked like a chaotic mess, like a hurricane blew through their section of the library. Gavin grinned as he looked at the different piles of topics they had arranged around the area. "Hmm, where to continue today?" Gavin said out loud. Thanks to Veronica, who memorized all the books and materials digitally, Gavin felt less overwhelmed. Without her help, he thought his head might explode from trying to take in all this information so fast.

Veronica, how much room do you still have for recording the information in this library? Gavin asked his AI partner.
Rest assured, Master Gavin. The amount of space you have used so far is comparable to a drop of water in the vast ocean. I can memorize and categorize all the information in this library. I store it for quick access when I need it. Veronica's soothing voice filled his mind and reassured him. Gavin realized in a short time that Veronica had a knack for memorizing books. She could recall the information he needed without delay. This way, he could learn the key information from the books in a short time. He didn't have to struggle to understand every little detail.
Erza chuckled, a quiet sound, while settling into one of the tables. "Your little AI is such a cheat code, wolf boy," Erza whispered to Gavin. He had told her about that little trick when he discovered it. It made the hours of research that much more productive. Gavin already understood the principles behind the second level of magic. The advanced form that Professor Okeeba demonstrated. Conjuring physical manifestations of elemental magic. Tools, weapons, physical objects imbued with the elements to use at will.
Gavin grinned as he looked at her. "I want to explore some forbidden topics," he said, thinking about necromancy magic. Necromancy magic had been stuck in his mind since the first time that he heard about it. It seemed to have so much potential for his goals and mission. Mrs. Dobson's warning played in his head every time he thought about researching that topic. Gavin was sure he understood the first and second principles of magic.
"Are you sure about that?" Erza asked him with a raised eyebrow in surprise. "Mrs. Dobson said that was a forbidden topic for a dangerous reason," she said to him. She focused on helping them gain the strength and power needed for their hunt against the mercenary group and the mission from Koray. But, this was the wrong path for him to take carelessly and without much consideration.
Gavin leaned back in his chair and looked at her. "Yeah, I'm sure. "I think necromancy magic will be useful for our future plans," Gavin said softly as he weighed their choices. The tournament with Daedalus Academy was coming up soon. He wanted to show that his skills had improved a lot and surpassed their expectations.
Erza bit her lip in indecision. She understood the point he was making. But she had a bad feeling in the bottom of her gut that this was not the right path to take. She let out a defeated sigh as she looked at her mate. "There's nothing I can say to change your mind, is there?" She could try all day, but when Gavin set his mind to it, she could never convince him to change the decision.
Gavin let out a wolfish grin at her. "You know me so well, baby," he said to her in a conspiratorial whisper. She sighed in annoyance. Then, she got up and used the organizer system to find all the necromancy magic materials.
They took a few minutes, but soon they had a new pile of books, tablets, and scrolls on the table in their slice of heaven. Erza sat down with a frown next to her boy as he began to open the books and turn on the pads. He was eager to learn all he could about necromancy magic before the tournament started in a week. He had a plan to dominate the competition, and necromancy magic would be a crucial part.
Do you want me to keep cataloging and memorizing all important data about necromancy? Veronica asked Gavin in his mind.
Yes, Veronica. Can you compile some tutorial videos for me so I can learn them in a short amount of time? Gavin asked her as he got an idea in his head. He wasn't sure if this was possible, but it was worth attempting.
Gavin felt an electrified buzz in his mind as Veronica was doing her magic. It was like watching an old cartoon fast-forward in his mind. Images and words rushed through his mind as Veronica's database took in all the information. He quickly understood why necromancy was seen as forbidden magic.
Actual necromancy magic differs from its portrayal in books and TV. It has strict rules and limits that are hard to bypass. Veronica told Gavin that she quickly grasped the information she was adding to her database.
Alright, go on, I'm listening, Gavin replied. He leaned back in his chair and appeared to be taking a nap. He closed his eyes and rested his hands on his lap. Erza realized that this pose meant he was talking to Veronica in his mind. He would focus on their conversation for a bit.
You cannot bring back someone to life who has been dead for more than a few minutes. Once a certain time has passed, even the best necromancy can't bring someone back to life. You also can't guarantee that a specific soul will return to the vessel you want to resurrect and control. Veronica replied in his mind as she went through all the pertinent information.
Go on, Veronica. If I cannot use it to bring back, say, my clan members, then how can I use this type of magic? Gavin asked her as his mind was racing with other possible uses for this specific magic.
This magic is old and powerful. You can use it to bind any random soul into the body of a fallen foe. The body must be in good condition and not damaged by rot and decay. The summoned spirit then forms a contract with the user until the spell is lifted or canceled. You will be their master, so the summoned spirit cannot disobey you or harm you. Veronica replied.
Gavin's mind raced at that particular information. So, he couldn't say take the life of an enemy, then bring them back to question them or force them to do his bidding. He could, however, force a spirit into the enemy's body. That spirit will then be contracted to do his will and be a dependable ally. He could potentially raise an army to fight for him in that regard.
Does the spell to summon and bind a spirit to a corpse keep draining my mana points until I cancel it? Gavin asked her as he considered the possible uses for necromancy magic.
The spell will only use mana points upon initial cast. However, Master Gavin, you should be aware that the time the body lasts will not be for long. The body will still continue to naturally decay and rot with the summoned spirit. The time frame is also dependent on the condition of the body upon death. The better the condition, the longer the summoned spirit will last. Veronica answered his question and then some.
Gavin grinned as he opened his eyes and looked at Erza. "We just hit the mother-load of overpowered magic." He was beyond ecstatic. In any large-scale battle, Gavin would never fight alone. The more bodies he dropped, the greater his allied numbers grew. He explained everything he learned from Veronica to Erza in a quiet hushed whisper.
Erza's eyes grew wide at the thought of what he had access to now. This was a slippery slope for them both. Gavin was focused on gaining power. He wanted to complete the mission for Koray and hunt down the True Lords Army remnants. She was beginning to become concerned about him. This obsession would only lead to trouble for them both, and she didn't want him getting hurt on a hunt for revenge.
"We shouldn't use this magic. I don't like it," Erza said. The thought of forcing a spirit, any spirit, into a body that was already dead and forcing it to fight. It didn't sit well with her. It was wrong on so many moral and ethical grounds.
Gavin's smile faltered as he took note of her tone and concerned look. "I know. It's not pleasant magic to use. It's dark and dangerous. It isn't something I will use willy-nilly." He promised her as he took her hand and gave her a gentle squeeze. He knew this was powerful magic, but what cost did it come with?
"From what I understand, this is something I will only be able to use during large-scale battles. Using the bodies of fallen enemies to attack their own comrades. "It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but I won't turn down power that can keep you and others safe," Gavin said. There was fire in his eyes as he made the promise to her. He would keep it in his back pocket, like an ace up his sleeve. Only use it when the situation is dire enough.
She bit her lip in indecision. She wanted to argue, but now wasn't the time or place for it. He already had knowledge of necromancy. Arguing about anything would be a waste of time. She let out a disgusted sigh, unhappy with the turn of events. "Fine, only in the most dire of circumstances," she conceded.
Gavin nodded as he leaned in to kiss her cheek. He knew she wasn't happy. He had no choice but to chase whatever path to power he could find. "I am still going to look into other avenues of magical study, Erza," Gavin promised her, trying to calm her down. He could feel her concern and irritation radiating off her. The strong set of her jaw, the frown on her face, and the narrowness of her eyes. She wanted to beat him down for being so stubborn.
