Chapter 92: Not waking up

When Rohan arrived at his castle that night, the first thing he did was to enquire about his wife, and when he was told she had gone to sleep, he gave a thoughtful look and then nodded his head, deciding to allow her sleep. He would go to her in the morning when she most likely would be feeling much better about everything that had happened. As much as he would have liked to console her, he had no words for it and knew he might end up making her feel much worse for her trust issues rather than better.

He wasn’t the right company to her tonight, Rohan thought, as he handed the heart of the witch to Rav, who was regarding him with a question at the sight of the blood on his face and the state of his attire.

"I died and came back to life," was all he said to Rav, and Rav made an oh sound and then took the heart and walked to go and put it away. It wasn’t the first time of something like this happening. He had become used to that phrase of dying and coming back to life.

Once Rav was gone and had said he would send someone to fix his bath, Rohan did not go to his chamber. He retraced his steps and made his way to the dead garden outside. The rain had stopped, but it was still drizzling. He used his wings to get there faster and dropped straight where his plant had once been under the large apple tree.

He had not thrown the soil away and had gathered it into another flowerpot with the hopes that his plant would regrow again, even though he knew it was a one-time chance, but as he had expected, it did not grow. He retrieved the little bottle in his pocket and uncapped it with his thumb, and then turned it down on the pot.

He emptied the green liquid into the soil, and immediately it began to bring out smoke and make sizzling sounds like something was burning. Rohan watched it without blinking, waiting for the plant to revive itself, but to his absolute disappointment, the soil began to dry up and turn small and black, like the remains of burnt fabric inside the pot.

"No, no, no, damnit!!" He gritted in anger as he looked down at the pot.

His plant did not sprout out. His fingers slowly began to clench into fists, and with an angry swing of his arm, he sent the pot hurling across the garden and crashing into another tree in the distance with a loud impact.

He punched his fist against the big apple tree repeatedly until the tree bent and was in the process of breaking out of its root. His face was throbbing with angry dark veins as he closed his eyes to rein in his rage, his face turned skyward with the little drops of rain falling on his heated, enraged face.

His rage had always been his undoing since his childhood, and it was one of the main reasons he was called mad. Now, to control it and stop himself from destroying a garden he had worked his hardest to plant—all of Kuhn’s favorite snacks to keep the creature occupied with eating apples and oranges when Rohan wasn’t around—he was able to calm his mind faster than he had ever been as he thought of beautiful hazel eyes and the sound of his wife’s melodic voice.

Her flushed face when she became shy and embarrassed by his teasing and caressing made the dark veins on his face slowly begin to disappear, and the savage urge to destroy everything around him began to settle.

And with that gone, he felt the unbearable urge to go to her, lay beside her, listen to her heartbeat—or even do something much more fun. Like kissing those lips that had begun to learn to return his strokes, and to touch her tongue with his and caress her rounded full breasts that filled his palms. He wanted to taste the heat of her warmth and stroke it with his tongue until she whimpered and shuddered with pleasure...

Rohan groaned deep in his throat as he realized how the thought of all that had made his trousers strain and made his muscles tense. His rage was gone, and now it was replaced with intense arousal, which he knew he had no way of tending to at the moment.

He wasn’t going to go to his wife tonight because if he dared try to watch her while in his state as she slept, there was no telling he wouldn’t wake her and then have his way with her on that bed. There was no telling he wouldn’t actually couple and slide his erection into her warmth until he found that release he had not gotten in days.

Rohan left the garden, not allowing himself to think about the plant nor his wife tonight. Instead of going into the castle, he went to hunt for his night dessert in the human town.

---

The next morning, Rohan, who had bathed early and dressed had asked Rav to prepare a large breakfast of everything he noticed his wife loved to eat, but he was greeted with bad news the moment he walked into the hall.

"Something is wrong with the lady, my Lord. Gwen tried to wake her but she isn’t moving, and I went to check myself—no matter how much I called and shook her, she remained still and—My Lord!" Rav called as Rohan brushed past him and made his way to her chamber to see for himself what was wrong with his woman.

He leaped up the stairs five at a time and yanked her door open to see Gwen hovering over her and trying to shake her awake.

"Step aside!" Rohan warned the head maid as he reached his wife’s bed and sat at the edge, with one leg bent on the bed to reach for her shoulders.

"Sweetheart?" He gently shook her as he pulled her into a sitting position and brought her to lean against his chest.

"Isa?" he called again, this time louder, but she did not move nor make any indication that she heard him.

If it wasn’t for the faint beating of her heart and her hollow breathing, Rohan would have thought she was dead. But something was utterly wrong with her.

He moved her gently back to inspect her face and was greeted with her deadly pale complexion and lips. She had on a serene sleeping face with her lashes resting peacefully against her cheeks. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was as pale as a ghost and still as the dead, he would have thought she was actually sleeping.

"What did she do last night before she slept?" he questioned the two people in the room with him as he laid her back down on the bed and touched his fingers to her forehead that was cold. She did not have a fever, which was a relief but something else was wrong.

It was Gwen who stepped forward to reply, with her head bowed.

"I knew something wasn’t right with the lady since last night. Sir Rav ordered me to check and make sure to help her bathe and change, my Lord," she reported and then continued to explain when Rohan’s deadly eyes shot towards her.

"I came to help her bathe, but she had already done that with cold water and changed herself. I had expected to find her crying about everything that had happened, but she stood by the balcony, staring outside at the sky. I cautioned her about catching a cold, and she told me to leave her alone and leave the room. When I came to check on her later, I found her sleeping already, so I did not bother her... but this morning when I came to help her prepare, she isn’t waking up..."

Rohan was going to part his lips to accuse both Rav and Gwen for not letting him know that she hadn’t been crying last night but had acted that way—when he noticed Belle’s lips moved, and a moan escaped from her, then stopped. If it wasn’t for his sharp hearing, he would have missed the sound.

He leaned down and touched her cold cheek with his gloved hand while calling gently, "Isa? Can you hear me?"

Silence. She did not make a sound again.

As much as he wanted not to think of it, he had a feeling what was wrong, and it became utterly clear when he smelled the scent of her blood that wafted to his nose.

He did not have to look around her body to find where the blood was coming from. His eyes fell on her wrist, where a cut was slowly forming and the blood was oozing out. It was a fresh cut that seemed like it was spiritually happening at the moment.

Rohan looked around the chamber. "Kuhn," he gritted as he realized the creature was nowhere in sight, when he had been sticking around her for the past few days like a tail.

"I hope you are with her," Rohan muttered as he ordered for a cloth and a bowl of water to be brought for him. "Immediately!"

Gwen ran to get it, while Rav moved closer to see Rohan pressing his handkerchief against the blood oozing out from her wrist.

"My Lord, do you have any idea what is wrong with her?" he asked, curious and worried, as he had never seen anything like this before—for someone to sleep like the dead and a cut to be forming on their hand when there was no one cutting them. He had witnessed many unusual things living with his Lordship, but this was the very first time he’d seen something like this. Especially with a human.

"She is in the in-between," Rohan remarked gravelly.
