Mated To The Cruel Prince-Chapter 35: Playing The Spy
Chapter 35: Playing The Spy
A child in a pub would have seemed conspicuous, but with Remy beside him, it would look no other than an unruly mother influencing her child negatively by bringing him here.
However, they were not alone, and seated across from him was Issac, the Fae he sent away to meet his father has finally returned. Aldric had sensed Maximus’ summoning since the early morning but could not respond and had pushed the thought to Remy’s mind instead; they needed to get out. And the opportunity presented itself to them.
Islinda would look for them and would not find them. That was exactly why they were here, away from prying eyes and limiting the chances of bumping into Islinda in her search for them. Islinda knew the market well, but so did Remy and she suggested this place to talk.
It was game over for Adric if Islinda found him with Issac, already she was beginning to suspect him and that made things fun. But it was not the time for her to know the entire truth yet, there were still some things he had to put in place. And he has been getting a lot of ideas today.
"Your Highness?"
He saw the conflict in Issac’s eyes and Aldric knew why. Not every Fae had the ability to glamor himself, nor could everyone see through the magic either. Issac had only been able to see him because he took on a younger version of himself, and was recognizable. Not to mention, his favorite horse shifter led him here.
"Forgive my appearance, Issac, you would find out that I’m in the human realm and they have a profound affection for children," He smiled at the memory of Islinda ruffling his hair playfully.
"Nor did I currently have a cloak my adult size," Aldric hinted at the fact that Issac was wearing a cloak to hide his appearance.
Issac pressed his lips together and did not say anything, however, his gaze roved to the human seated with them, concerned as well.
"You need not worry about her," Aldric reached and stroked her hair, a rapt glint in his eyes like a creator staring down at his creation, "She has been a useful device to her stay here."
"You took over her mind," Issac blanched, flinching as if the prince committed the worst crime.
"Of course, she’s not a wraith." Aldric’s lips pulled back to reveal glittering teeth, "I merely got into her mind and made her susceptible to my suggestion, making my stay here easy. She will return to herself once I leave."
"Hopefully soon." Issac didn’t realize that he had blurted out the thought out loud until Aldric raised a brow at him. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
"I like your brashness but I wonder if that would lead to your death."
Issac swallowed when he recognized the threat in his tone but Aldric downplayed it by saying,
"Don’t worry, I love that you’re opined considering I don’t do well with backstabbers. I tell you, Issac, you’re one of my own now and I take care of my people." He said so seriously that Issac almost believed him.
There was no way the prince was saying the truth, right? Not when he keeps putting him in dangerous situations. But then, why do his words sound convincing?
Aldric leaned closer," Now, any news from my dearest father?"
"The king said you can have a few days bonding with your brother,"
"Sweet. I didn’t realize my father is capable of such loving emotion."
"However...."
"However?" Aldric looked at him expectantly, waiting for the catch, everything was too real to be good.
"His Majesty wants his highness, Prince Valerie returned to the Fae realm unharmed." He announced, waiting for the prince’s response.
Issac expected many reactions but not the wide fiendish grin that split his features.
"Of course, I would return my brother unharmed," Adric said with emphasis and for that reason alone, Issac’s stomach sank. He hadn’t been with the dark prince long enough but he knew those words didn’t sound sincere at all.
"Your Highness," He wanted to make the prince realize how serious this was, "His Majesty, the King, would not take it lightly if anything were to happen to -"
"His favorite son," His features were strained, cold, "You think I don’t know that since the day I was born. I am aware of that, Issac. I never trusted to live a long life but I’m not stupid enough to bring a great wrath upon myself by harming the future king of Astaria." He said it with so much disdain that Isaac could finally understand Queen Maeve’s wariness to leave both brothers together.
Both of them were fire and ice and could never mix. But on the bright side, the prince understood the repercussion of his actions or so he thought because the dark prince added, "However, some harms do not come physically."
The malevolence surrounding him made the breath catch in his throat. Whatever the dark prince was planning, whatever games the dark prince had in store for his Highness Valerie, Issac had a feeling that it was not going to end here and there was more to it. Aldric was not telling him everything and how was this human connection to him? In what way, was she helping his stay in the human realm?
"Now, I want you to run along to your prince," Aldric started, cutting him off from his thought, "tell my brother dearest that he’s free to roam the human realm for a few days. But make no mention of me and under no circumstances should he realize I’m in the human realm with him."
Issac clenched his jaw, he hated playing the spy, not when Valerie was the future king and his future was already doomed the instant he was given to Aldric. Valerie would never forgive him once he uncovers all of this.
"Do you understand me, Issac?"
"Yes, my prince." He gave in. Aldric was his master now, there was no going back.
"Good."
