Chapter 47: Get Rid Of Her

Ouch.

Islinda woke up on the ground again and this time her body hurt like hell. Did she fall from the bed? Was this becoming a daily occurrence? At least she was covered with the duvet this time and not sprawled far away like the last time. Did Eli do this? Islinda had complicated feelings about it.

But that was until she looked at the bed, there was no sign of Eli and the window was opened, revealing the morning sun. Oh no, Islinda’s stomach churned when she realized what that meant. She was late to make breakfast. Not that she hasn’t seen that coming after sleeping in. But she had somehow hoped her body would adjust to the change, but that obviously wasn’t the case here.

Islinda stood up at once and rushed to the living room only to stop short when she saw the family gathered around for breakfast. The shock was too great when she realized that breakfast was ready and from the look of things, Lillian made it.

"You’re up," Lillian was the first to notice her and Islinda swallowed down numbly, sensing the malevolent energy around her. What does she have in store for her? Merely staring at the unnatural smile made her prickle with fear and the hairs on the back of her neck stood on edge.

Nonetheless, Islinda refused to give in to her intimidation and answered, "Yes, I’m up. Thank you for helping me out with breakfast."

"First Remy, now Lillian has to make breakfast for you too. Are you now trying to make my children into your slaves?" Madam Alice spoke out, her expression painted with annoyance

Islinda bowed her head, pretending to be submissive so they could let her go, "Of course not, Mother. It will not happen again."

"Do you mean the part where you sneak out at night?" Lillian brought up the conversation.

"What do you mean by that?" Madam Alice picked up the conversation and Islinda felt nervous sweat coat her forehead.

Of course, she should have known Lillian would not let this go, not after their showdown last night. This was her revenge, telling on her. Islinda knew she had to be smart around this.

She was just about to speak up when Lillian took the words right out of her mouth.

"Apparently, our sister here felt so suffocated that she left sometime in the night to clear her head. She went out dressed in her nightgown. One would think that she had met up with a secret lover. But that wasn’t the case, was it?" Lillian turned to her with a smirk," I had to warn her of the dangers of being alone at such unholy hours or do I lie, sister?"

Islinda’s hands at her sides formed into fists and her body shook with fury, yet she controlled herself. Lillian intentionally painted the wrong picture, insinuating that she was with a man last night, even though that was the case, but they do not need to know that. It’s not like she had seen them. This was a plain accusation to ruin her reputation and it was working.

Madam Alice’s heated gaze turned to her, "Is that so?"

"Yes, mother. My sister Lillian had to remind me that there are dangerous creatures around and she wouldn’t want to lose the breadwinner of the family," She repeated Lillian’s words knowing Madam Alice would lose her calm hearing that.

Even though she practically contributed nothing to the family, Madam Alice gets off on the title of being the head of the family. She wanted to remain in control and Lillian undermined her authority by calling her -Islinda- the breadwinner of the family instead. She had hoped Madam Alice would get mad and Lillian would get into trouble, but the woman obviously wasn’t listening.

"You have a lover?" She interrogated her.

Cold fear crawled Islinda’s spine, she didn’t like where this was headed. What has Lillian done?

Islinda laughed uneasily, "Of course not -"

"Was it the Knight’s son?" Lillian interrupted her again, "He pursued you quite intensely that time. Tell me, did you finally change your mind and decide he’s husband material?"

The air left her lungs in a whoosh when Islinda heard that name and she glared at Lillian, not minding the consequences.

Ryder was the son of the only Knight in their village. His father was said to work in the King’s army and was an honorable man, making him quite a reputable figure in the village. But the same couldn’t be said for his son, because the apple fell far from the tree.

Ryder was rude, haughty, an alcoholic, a womanizer, and had no regard for the female gender. He believed that a woman’s place was beneath her husband, pinned to the bed. She heard him making the dirty joke with his friends at the pub one day.

Islinda has no idea how she caught his attention, but he wanted to conquer her. Ryder saw her as a game because she wouldn’t even look at him unlike other women who threw themselves on him and wanted his attention because of what he could offer them - his father’s riches.

She has once seen him with her sister Remy and a shudder of disgust went through Islinda at the thought of what they had been doing together. It was no wonder Remy bristled when Lillian brought his name up. Ryder’s pursuit of Islinda was well known in the village because he had been quite relentless, employing many tactics to try to get her attention.

But after a kick or two to the place a lady shouldn’t mention and pressing the tip of her arrowhead to his neck, drawing blood as a warning, he had called her crazy and did not bother her afterward.

Islinda does not see him in the village all the time because he’s always moving and looking for his next pitiful target. The last she heard, his bastard children were about a dozen.

And yet, her lovely sister wanted her together with such a man. Lillian intended to get rid of her once and for all.
