Mushoku Tensei: Reincarnated as a Beast Race-Chapter 134 - As Long As She’s There For Me
Chapter 134 - 134 - As Long As She's There For Me
POV: Rudeus Greyrat
I looked toward the horizon, seeing the vast and barren Demon Continent.
The landscape was dry and harsh, the wind cutting the skin with a fine dust that seemed relentless. My eyes turned to the group that accompanied me.
By my side were Sylphy and Vidette.
In Vidette's arms, rested a child with brown skin, intense red eyes, and hair as black as the night. It had been about a month since Vidette had given birth.
Despite the chaos around us and the hostility of the Demon Continent, she maintained that calm and determined look, as if she were ready to protect that life with everything she had.
Many things had happened since my last encounter with Hitogami.
By the way, speaking of him, he had been missing since then. The last "advice" I received was during our stay in the Dragon King's Realm.
It was when he suggested that we take Vidette to his tribe, in the Demon Continent. Many things went wrong since then, and others went very well.
Following Hector's advice, we decided to travel secretly through Milis.
Apparently, the organization of our target, Rygar Adoldia, had firmly established itself in Milis, and to avoid drawing attention, we infiltrated silently.
We didn't register with Adventurer Guilds. We only took on outsourced jobs, acting as mercenaries in small towns, avoiding any kind of direct contact with the major organizations.
Hector made it a point that we moved with the utmost secrecy.
Thinking back now... if we hadn't done that, maybe we could have been found by Sylphy's father...? After all, they were looking for those missing in the Teleportation Incident... but then again, we couldn't have known.
And also, those guys even went as far as killing Laws when he tried to help us. It was clear: the Iron Legion was targeting our lives.
In the middle of this journey, despite all our caution, we were still ambushed. Vidette was gravely injured and captured.
At great cost, we managed to escape alive to Milishion, the capital of the Sacred Kingdom of Milis. That seemed to be one of the few places out of the Legion's reach. At least for now.
Sylphy was devastated after seeing her father killed in front of her.
Hector was also visibly worried about Vidette. I, honestly, was in shock.
Seeing Sylphy in that state... it was painful. She had clung to the hope of reuniting with her family so strongly, but as soon as she found her father, he was betrayed and killed by the "friends" of the Legion.
Sylphy cried for hours on my lap, sobbing in a way that broke the heart. She was so shattered that not a single indecent thought crossed my mind.
After regrouping, we decided to seek information at the local Adventurer Guild.
When we entered, I was startled. For a moment, I thought it was my mother. Zenith? But no... it was just a woman very much like her.
Later, I discovered it was my aunt: Therese Latreia.
The Latreia House apparently wanted to speak with us, seeking some kind of collaboration.
Hector believed that Milis had heard about our conflict with the Iron Legion and decided to get closer.
That was how, unexpectedly, I reencountered the first member of my family.
Norn Greyrat. Or rather, she now seemed to be called Norn Latreia. My little sister was now only about 3 or 4 years old and as cute as I remembered.
But she... didn't remember me... but she did remember Sylphy a little!
I confess that it hurt me a bit, since I had spent more time with her. But Norn recognizing Sylphy, and me mentioning the names of Zenith, Paul, Lilia, and Aisha was enough to convince my grandmother, Claire Latreia, of our identity.
Claire was... how can I put this politely? Rigid. And extremely prejudiced.
Cold and with a gaze that judged you to the soul, she seemed to judge Sylphy for her mixed race. Even so, she appeared genuinely interested in the family's safety.
We discovered, through her, that Lilia and Aisha had spent a year staying there along with Norn.
But, not finding any relevant information about the rest of us, they decided to leave; Claire didn't know where they were, but she said she had given money for the trip.
In other words, we lost each other on the way... if only we hadn't traveled anonymously...
We stayed at the Latreia House for a while; Sylphy and I interacted a lot with Norn, playing with her was a sort of bandage for Sylphy after her father's death.
But it was like trying to mend a deep cut with a band-aid, she was still very sad.
We shared with the Latreia House that Paul and Zenith were on the Demon Continent. Hector invented a plausible excuse about how we got that information, so they wouldn't think it was just unfounded theory.
We also mentioned Vidette, who had been captured by the Legion, of course, we conveniently didn't mention her race. Because of that, the higher-ups in Milis agreed to collaborate with us.
They said that the Iron Legion had imprisoned not only Vidette, but also nobles, warriors, and other allies of Milis.
And since they knew one of us had been captured, they suggested a joint operation. That was the origin of our alliance.
But that alliance... also didn't end very well.
I mean, for us, it ended up being for the best, since we managed to rescue Vidette, but the Iron Legion was much more prepared than we expected.
In less than thirty minutes after the start of the attack, they had already surrounded most of the area. Human warriors and beastmen appeared from all sides, as if they had been waiting, but it was just a quick reaction.
The knights of Milis managed to rescue many prisoners, including nobles and adventurers, but during the battles, many others were killed.
One of the main reasons for our partial 'success' was Sylphy. She attacked relentlessly with her magic all the members of the Legion. As if she were venting her anger, and perhaps she truly was.
She was powerful... Even though I knew I had more mana than her, I believed I would never win in a direct combat.

She was simply much stronger than me, much more experienced, much more determined.
Of course, I also helped — I conjured bogs to delay the enemies, and used fire magic whenever possible.
Overall, we were relieved to have managed to rescue Vidette. And, at least, she wasn't tortured. But... she told them everything they asked. She didn't lie.
She wanted to avoid any possibility of torture that could affect her unborn baby. It was understandable, but it meant that they now knew everything about us, which made me uncomfortable.
Thanks to Sylphy, the situation wasn't a complete disaster for Milis.
They thanked us and rewarded us, even though I could feel the judgment in their eyes when they discovered that the woman we were trying to save was of the demonic race.
My grandmother, Claire Latreia, sent knights from the Latreia House to escort us through the Great Forest to Zant Port. That was her way of helping in the search for Zenith, and she trusted me a little more because Norn seemed to like me.
The Iron Legion could already be spread everywhere, but they weren't a unified Kingdom. There were many gaps to be exploited for those who had traveled for many years through the Great Forest.
There were eight sacred knights marching silently as our escort, all subordinate to the Latreia House.
The strongest among them, Gilish Latreia, was a cousin of my mother, Zenith. A man with an imposing posture and eyes that seemed to scrutinize every step we took.
We crossed the forest toward the Demon Continent.
Most of the journey went as expected, only beasts and monsters as obstacles, until they appeared.
Some warrior of the bestial race noticed us at some point. We were ambushed by several of them.
Leading the attackers was a girl our age, very talkative — Linia Dedoldia. She used unenchanted magic with incredible versatility, and mixed that with fast and unpredictable fencing.
She reminded me of our fight against Rygar... That fighting style was familiar.
Under Linia's leadership, half of our group was exterminated.
Including Hector. He died protecting Vidette, who was still pregnant. I was in shock. Sylphy too. But soon after... the fury came. A rage that took over both of us.
Only this time, it didn't help. On the contrary.
Linia took advantage of our carelessness, our blind anger, and delivered an almost fatal blow to Sylphy. Her sword cut Sylphy's face, destroying one of her eyes and leaving a large scar.
Sylphy nearly died... because of my incompetence.
When we finally realized the gravity of the situation, we decided to flee. But Linia pursued us.
She continued casting long-range spells, keeping us constantly alert, preventing any rest.
Sylphy and I managed to disperse most of the pursuers by occasionally casting large-scale spells at them.
But Linia pursued us relentlessly, and worst of all: she taunted.
She mocked Hector's death, insulted, ridiculed, prodded at our wounds.
The knights of Milis said they were just tactics to make us stay and fight. That we should ignore her. But how? How to ignore that? I, Sylphy, Vidette — we all wanted to see her dead.
But we couldn't. At least not there, not at that moment.
When we finally managed to escape her reach, she shouted:
"Heh, you're lucky Kilian is too busy to deal with you!"
And disappeared.
After fulfilling their mission and escorting us to Zant Port, the knights of the Latreia House returned to Milishion. We don't know if they managed to come back alive... but I hope so.
Our group continued the journey.
I, Sylphy, and Vidette, now shaken by Hector's death, carrying anger, remorse, guilt, and sadness. Thus, we took a boat toward the Demon Continent.
Sylphy was now blind in one eye. The scar was no longer there, but the eye couldn't be reconstructed by advanced-level magic, so she started using an eye patch.
Upon arriving, we went to the Adventurer Guild. And we discovered something unexpected: Master Roxy was already on the Demon Continent. Looking for me and my family with my father's old adventurer group, the Black Wolf Preys.
Months passed. Vidette gave birth. It was Larax's child. His name: Ajax.
We ventured deeper into the Demon Continent. Many things happened during that time.
But in all of them... Sylphy was by my side. As long as she was with me, I could move forward, I could strive to improve, that was my thought.
One day, while we were traveling and Ajax had a fever, crying a lot, Sylphy and I were fighting monsters. We were tired, but steadfast. One of the monsters managed to get past us and ran to Vidette and Ajax.
We were shocked and nervous, but then, arriving to save our skin, we met him for the first time:
Ruijerd Superd.

POV: Linia Dedoldia
When I returned to the tribe and dispersed the hunting party, I went straight to the chief's room of the tribe, Gustav Dedoldia, my grandfather.
The tall trees of the Great Forest swayed gently in the wind, and the scent of moss and wet earth filled the air.
The ground beneath my feet was familiar, the sound of warriors training in the distance gave me a sense of normalcy. But my mission had not ended well.
Upon entering my grandfather's room, he was gathered with other warriors around a large rustic wooden table. As soon as he saw me, he dismissed the others with a gesture and turned his serious gaze toward me.
"Were they eliminated?" he asked, in a heavy voice.
I snorted and crossed my arms, flicking my tail impatiently.
"Tch, no, nya! They managed to escape. The old man and most of the Milis knights were eliminated, but that Rudeus and the elf got away alive, nya."
My grandfather frowned, a sigh escaping his lips.
"If Kilian hadn't had to go to the front line, we could have finished this here..."
I couldn't help but agree.
Kilian was only fourteen years old, but he was already a monster in combat.
Despite the serious and unapproachable facade he always maintained as the leader of the Legion, he was undeniably the fiercest warrior of his generation. No one in the Great Forest dared claim they could beat him in a direct fight.
In addition to using unenchanted magic masterfully, he was proficient in the North God Style and the Water God Style. But his most dangerous point was his wind magic. It wasn't for nothing that he became known as the "Gale Reaper" around here.
Perhaps Taes in Tinaver could win, it had been many years since I saw him fight.
I scratched my ear disdainfully and muttered:
"If only Pursena were with me, I think we could have taken them down, nya!"
My grandfather just sighed, massaging his temples.
"It's a shame. Let's focus on Milis for now. The chief of the Fandia tribe, of the half-bears, refused to send troops to the front line. It seems he wants to distance himself now that Kilian isn't around. Go and crush his confidence again if necessary, replace the leader. I trust you."
A small smile threatened to appear on my lips. I was a bit happy that grandpa trusted me so much, but outwardly, I maintained my pose.
"Hmph! Not even a minute's rest for your granddaughter, nya! What an excellent leader, nya!" I muttered theatrically, leaving the room with exaggerated steps, as if I were outraged.
Still, I went to continue my mission. Among the young ones, only Kilian was stronger than me. But he was stronger than everyone, so that doesn't count. Of course, between me and Pursena, I was obviously the strongest!
Lisena was very strong too, her ice magic was the best in the Great Forest. But she was more of a mage, and not much of a warrior.
But there were many veteran warriors in the tribe who had evolved a lot in recent years; with my unenchanted magic and fencing, I was definitely among the strongest, though not in second place or anything like that.
Actually, the main reason I was going was quite simple: all the other elite fighters already had missions. In turbulent times like these, there was no rest.
While I ran through the village, I observed the tribe members in action. Children training with wooden swords, axes, and spears, warriors moving through the trees fluidly, the smell of roasted meat coming from the dining area.
The Great Forest itself was experiencing a prolonged period of 'peace', despite the borders being in constant tension.
There was no one daring to invade the Great Forest like before, and even if they did, they would soon be caught due to the vast reach of the Iron Legion.
And that was due to one person.
Rygar Adoldia.
Our chief. The one who changed everything.
Perhaps at this moment he was already in the Sword Sanctuary training.
He had told us that, eventually, we should go to Ranoa — Kilian, Lisena, Pursena, and I. But that plan had been postponed until the conflicts with Milis ceased.
I wasn't too worried about that.
In fact, I preferred to learn from Rygar when he returned. I... wanted him around. Pursena seemed to have a thing for Kilian, hehe.
That only left me with a clear path to seduce the chief when he came back!
Imagining how strong he would be when he returned made me dedicate myself even more, so that he would find me incredible when he came back.
With that in mind, I propelled myself between the trees toward the half-bears' tribe, with a light heart, sharp claws, and a mind inspired to beat someone up.
