The melody of a waltz softly echoed through the hall as the party transitioned into its next phase—dancing. The marble floor sparkled under the lights, and couples slowly filled the space and began to sway and spin in perfect harmony.

Standing at the edge of the dance floor with Elion and Kade, Raelynn's eyes bounced from the dancers and the shining floor, unsure of where to look. She shifted awkwardly, couldn't shake the feeling of being completely out of place. To her right, Elion looked as unbothered as ever, his hands resting in his pockets, looking as if he'd rather be anywhere else. To her left, Kade looked far more at ease, grinning like he found the whole thing amusing.

"Well," Kade said, breaking the silence as he surveyed the guests. "I'd say Raelynn's doing her job just fine."

Raelynn blinked and turned to him, confused. "Job? What job?"

Elion's lips curled into a faint smirk, and he spoke without looking at her. "So far, all those insufferable women have stayed far away from me."

Raelynn stared at him, realization dawning. "Wait… that's why you brought me here? To be your—your human shield from those flirty strangers?"

Elion's smirk deepened. "Something like that. I didn't think it would work this well, though."

She let out an annoyed sigh, folding her arms tightly as her cheeks flushing with a mix of anger and embarrassment. "So I'm your 'woman repellent' now?"

"If you want to put it that way," Elion replied with a casual shrug, sounding annoyingly calm.

Raelynn's jaw dropped, and she glared at him. "Unbelievable."

Kade chuckled, clearly enjoying the banter. "Well, your 'woman repellent' seems a bit feisty tonight, Elion."

Raelynn shot Kade a look, but he merely grinned back at her.

For a moment, the three of them stood in silence, watching as couples swirled across the dance floor. The waltz grew louder, its romantic melody filling the space between them.

"Aren't you two going to dance?" Kade finally asked, breaking the silence.

Raelynn shook her head with so much force it was a wonder it didn't fall off. "No. Absolutely not."

Elion didn't respond, his gaze fixed on a distant point across the room, his hands still buried in his pockets.

Kade raised an eyebrow, his grin widening. Leaning closer to Elion, he said in a low voice, "If you're not going to dance with her, then I will."

Elion didn't even bother to look his way, kept his expression as neutral as ever.

Kade tilted his head, waiting for a response. When none came, he said cheerfully, "That's a yes, then."

Before Raelynn could protest, Kade turned to her and extended his hand. "Come on, Raelynn. It's better than just standing here doing nothing."

Raelynn hesitated, looking at his outstretched hand as though it were a trap. "I don't know…"

Kade gave her an encouraging smile. "Trust me, it'll be fun. I promise not to step on your toes."

She glanced at Elion, hoping he might say something—anything—to stop this, but he remained silent. With a small, reluctant sigh, she finally slipped her hand into Kade's.

"Fine," she muttered, allowing him to lead her onto the dance floor.

The music felt louder up close, the beat practically vibrating through the air as they stepped onto the floor. Kade moved effortlessly, his steps smooth and confident as he led her.

"You're doing great," Kade said, flashing her a reassuring grin as they moved together.

Raelynn couldn't help but smile back, her frustration fading. "I'm trying not to trip."

"Don't worry. I've got you," he assured her, spinning her lightly.

The dance continued, their movements became smoother, more in sync. Raelynn began to relax, even enjoying herself a little. But just as she let her guard down, Kade spun her again, his grip light as she turned.

When she came to a stop, she realized she was no longer in Kade's arms.

Instead, she was face-to-face with Elion.

Her breath hitched as she looked up at him, her heart pounding. There was something in his eyes—serious, focused, impossible to ignore.

"I thought you didn't dance," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't," Elion said flatly.

"Then why are you here?" she asked, her brow furrowing.

A subtle smirk tugged at the corner of Elion's mouth. "Because someone has to save you from Kade."

Her words caught in her throat as his hand found her waist, sending a jolt through her. His other hand took hers, guiding her into the next step of the dance.

"I don't need saving," she finally managed to say, though her voice sounded far less confident than she'd intended.

"Clearly," Elion said dryly, though there was a flicker of amusement in his eyes.

The dance continued, their movements somehow more intense than they had been with Kade. Elion's grip on her was strong, almost commanding, and Raelynn couldn't help but suddenly hyper-aware of their closeness. His hand on her waist, his fingers brushing against hers, the way his eyes seemed to burn into hers—it was overwhelming.

"You're surprisingly good at this," she said, trying to fill the silence between them.

"I told you," Elion said, his voice low. "I know how to dance. I just don't like it."

"Then why bother?"

"Because you're here," he said simply.

Raelynn's breath caught, her mind racing. Was that supposed to mean something? Or maybe he was just being his usual, mysterious self?

She looked down, hoping to distract herself, but the way his grip shifted, drawing her closer, had her heart racing.

"Elion…" she began, unsure of what she was even trying to say.

But before she could finish, he spoke. "Don't overthink it, Raelynn." His voice was low and calm, but the storm of feelings inside her didn't quiet one bit.

As the song ended, the last notes fading into silence, she stepped back, breaking away from him.

"I need to… I need to go to the restroom," she said quickly, avoiding his gaze.

Elion didn't stop her, but his eyes followed her as she slipped away from the dance floor.

He stayed where he was, watching her vanish into the crowd with his hands tightening into fists.
