Chapter 173 -127: Are you seeing someone else?

“Yanyan, what’s he doing here?”

Ziyan glanced at Tang Shaosheng, then told Su Nian, “Let me go back.”

“Absolutely not.” She had just viciously scolded him yesterday. If Ziyan went back with him now, he might vent his anger on her again.

Seeing Tang Shaosheng approaching, the two stopped talking.

The meal went by quietly, with only Su Zhen talking the most. She sweetly complimented Ziyan’s cooking, complained that Su Bao wasn’t playing with her, and asked why her Uncle Shen hadn’t come.

Su Nian, annoyed that she favored Shen Hanxiu, just kept adding food to her bowl to shut her up.

After the meal, Su Nian and Ziyan cleaned up the kitchen. Then, Tang Shaosheng came to the kitchen doorway and looked at Ziyan, saying, “Let’s go.”

Before Su Nian could start scolding Tang Shaosheng, Ziyan walked up to him and gestured, “I need to speak with Nian’nian for a moment.”

Tang Shaosheng glanced at the two women, then stepped out of the kitchen.

Su Nian immediately asked, “Yanyan, are you really going back?”

“Anyway, I’ve stayed for two years; a few more days don’t make much difference. I can’t hide here all the time, but I haven’t given up on divorcing him. I’ll need your help with this, and I’ll wait for your good news at home.”

Su Nian, deeply concerned and holding her hand, said, “If you go back, you must protect yourself. I will help you settle the divorce as quickly as possible.”

“Thank you, Nian’nian.”

After saying goodbye to Su Nian, Ziyan left with Tang Shaosheng.

In the elevator, just the two of them, no one spoke.

They drove straight back to their former home. Remembering the last time she was locked in the car and nearly suffocated, Ziyan immediately opened the car door as soon as it stopped.

Tang Shaosheng was silent, seemingly resentful.

Ziyan had gotten used to his behavior. His smiles were always for other women, but with her, it was always a sour face.

Just as Ziyan felt restrained standing at home after changing her shoes, he said, “Go take a shower.”

Hesitating, Ziyan turned and went upstairs.

After the shower, as she opened the bedroom door, she saw him wearing a robe, sitting on the bed, drying his hair.

The hairdryer roared, covering Ziyan’s footsteps, but Tang Shaosheng sensed her arrival. He turned off the hairdryer and ordered, “Come here.”

Startled, Ziyan approached, and he pulled her over, pushed her to sit on the edge of the bed. Just as she thought he was going to do that again, the towel wrapping her wet hair was suddenly yanked off, and the hairdryer roared to life again…

He… was actually drying her hair? Was this an act of show to persuade her not to divorce?

No! Impossible, he didn’t care about her presence or absence, or even her at all.

Drying her hair was something she’d never even dreamed of.

His fingertips weaved through her hair, occasionally touching her scalp; the warm breeze on her hands was comfortable, so comfortable that she was dazed for a long time…

Just when she thought he had changed, while her hair was still damp, she felt his hand, previously stroking her hair, suddenly move to her neck, fingertips creeping into her sleepwear’s neckline. That’s when Ziyan snapped awake, her first instinct to stand up and escape.

But as if anticipating her move, his hand on her immediately pressed her down. Turning off the hairdryer and tossing it aside, he lifted her onto the bed in one motion. Ziyan gestured urgently, “I’m not convenient these days!”

Tang Shaosheng’s brow furrowed, thinking she was deceiving him. He reached out and felt SpongeBob, his face darkened; he let her go, turned to grab a cigarette by the bedside, lit it up, inhaling deeply before turning to ask her, “Song Ziyan, do you really want to divorce that badly?”

Ziyan thought, if she bluntly nodded, it might just bring more trouble. Not much time was left; she decided to play along a bit.

After considering, she said in a way that was neither deceptive nor too humiliating for him, “After all, our marriage is just for show. Once it’s over, you won’t have to see me and spoil your mood. You can also marry the woman you like, wouldn’t that be good?”

“Good?”

Tang Shaosheng chuckled coldly; it did sound good in theory. “Song Ziyan, do you have someone else?”

Ziyan mimicked his cold laugh, “You think anyone would want me in my current state? Don’t worry, I won’t make you a cuckold.”

Tang Shaosheng snorted and tightly grasped her chin, harshly, as if he wanted to crush her jaw, his gaze cold and threatening, “Song Ziyan, you think a divorce will free you? Let me tell you, don’t dream. Even without this marriage, you can’t escape!”

Ziyan had wanted to talk to him calmly, but his unreasonable attitude made it impossible for her not to get angry. She couldn’t remember ever owing him anything — no vendetta from the past, no recent quarrels — why wouldn’t he just let her go?

With hatred in her eyes, Ziyan turned her head and freed her jaw, choosing silence. Too tired to communicate with him through gestures – what was the point?

Tang Shaosheng did not give up because of her silence: “There’s only one way to leave me… and that’s death.”

Ziyan’s heart felt like it was being stabbed by thousands of needles. Regardless of whether the person saying this was her husband or a stranger, it was still upsetting.

She was no stranger to such words. Ever since she was little, she had heard them far too many times; her own biological mother had said to her, “Apart from singing, what can you do? You might as well die rather than be an actress! I don’t consider you my daughter; go die outside! Don’t die at home and dirty the floor!”

Even if she was tough as nails, she was still a woman of flesh and blood and emotions!

Tang Shaosheng’s words brought to mind her birth mother, the woman who had birthed her yet wished she would die. Ziyan’s eyes immediately filled with tears, but she stubbornly refrained from blinking, fearing that crying in front of others would expose her weakness.

Tang Shaosheng regretted his words the moment they were spoken, especially when he saw Ziyan—previously glaring at him with hatred—now with moistened eyes and lowered brows, a picture filled with disappointment…

Tang Shaosheng gritted his teeth. His pride kept him from offering an apology or comforting her, a woman who was plotting every conceivable way to leave him. She wasn’t worthy of his sympathy.

That’s right; if she were to leave, it would either be by his own release, or only through death.

Tang Shaosheng flicked the still burning cigarette butt onto the floor, crushed it harshly with his foot, and then stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

In the quiet room, Ziyan was already used to it. As for Tang Shaosheng, she didn’t quite know what to feel about him.

He was sometimes good, sometimes bad, his moods as unpredictable as the weather. Yet at the times she hated him the most, he would give her a shred of warmth.

Just like when he took away her voice, then later hired a sign language teacher for her—not only did she learn, but he learned alongside her. There was one time she went to his study late at night and saw him following along with the computer, practicing the hand signs.

She had never felt such warmth from family since she was a child, so that time was the first time she felt warmth because of Tang Shaosheng, even though he was the one who had thrown her into the cold…

Later, she grew accustomed to his hot and cold behavior, just like what just happened: one minute tenderly drying her hair, and the next telling her to go die.

She had despaired over him, but also felt warmth from him. She once considered him her family, but still felt that a marriage without love could only mean liberation for both by parting.

If it really came down to a fight to the death, she would choose to break the net rather than compromise…

Jinxiu Garden.

Su Nian had been waiting for Shen Hanxiu’s call all night. The kids were already asleep, and it was getting late. There was no movement on the phone. She was about to fall asleep after closing her computer when her phone started to buzz loudly—it was placed right next to her pillow, so the sound was particularly loud.

Su Nian instantly woke up, grabbed the phone to see a string of Arabic numbers she had been waiting for all night.

In the past, she would have instantly rejected the call, but today she pressed the green button without hesitation: “Hello…”

“Come down.”

“What?”

The voice on the other end got louder, repeating: “Come down!”

Still groggy, Su Nian glanced at the time on her phone—damn, it was already midnight! Was this a call to her death?

“I can’t be bothered to change, let’s just talk like this.”

“2 minutes. If you don’t come down, we can forget about the remaining matters.”

After that curt sound, Su Nian heard the ‘beep’ of the call being cut off. Frustrated, she scratched her hair, hurriedly got out of bed, grabbed a coat from the closet, took the document bag left by Ziyan, and rushed downstairs.

Below, Shen Hanxiu was wearing a white shirt, tucked into his suit trousers, his strong presence tempered with a bit of approachability.

Su Nian stepped forward and, without catching her breath, handed over the document bag: “What’s in it should make your job easier.”

Shen Hanxiu glanced at it but did not reach out to take it. Instead, he turned, opened the car door, and said to her, “Get in.”

Standing still, Su Nian said, “It’s already midnight, I have to work tomorrow.”

“I have to work tomorrow, too, so let’s not waste everyone’s time.”

Judging by his demeanor, if she didn’t get in the car, they might end up standing there till dawn. Clutching the document bag, she got into the car.

The midnight roads were empty, and the scenes going by were familiar—it was the route to the home they once shared.

Half an hour later, the car came to a steady stop. Following Shen Hanxiu into the house, Su Nian couldn’t help but tighten her coat.

Her mind was racing; when she had set her conditions, she had said anything but remarry, and yet he had laughed so sinisterly then.

Now in the dead of night, in the quiet, alone with a man, he wouldn’t be expecting her to… [sexual] compensation?

With that thought, it spiraled out of her control. Su Nian’s pace slowed as she followed him, wondering if she should just turn and run. But Shen Hanxiu had not yet agreed to deal with Ziyan’s matter, and for every day it was unresolved, both Ziyan and she would continue to be in deep trouble…

They were about to enter the house, and Su Nian struggled inwardly, but one foot followed Shen Hanxiu into the house—she knew then that there was no turning back…
