36 -21 Discoveries in Space_2

“Listen to the granddaughter-in-law,” Shen Zhangming declared, “look at this sun, I estimate the road will be dry after we eat, then we can go.”

Luo Yufang thought about it and didn’t insist, mainly because the goods her grandson had brought in were almost sold out, and the delay wasn’t going to make much difference.

“Wanwan, why is there an extra silver carp today?” Luo Yufang went to the kitchen to wash her hands, but noticed that in the basin, besides the common crucian carp, there was an additional silver carp.

—The granddaughter-in-law, being pregnant, didn’t crave meat much, but fish and shrimp she could never tire of, thankfully those didn’t cost money.

“I specifically asked Brother Yuan Lin to reserve it for me.

Xiu’er is staying at school, and the food in the cafeteria lacks nutrition.

I want to make her some wine-scented fish to take there.” Lin Xiaoguai put a dish of salty-pickled vegetables on the table, removed her apron, and said.

“Alright, do you need help?” Luo Yufang looked at her granddaughter-in-law’s discernible belly with some worry.

Even her own mother wasn’t as thoughtful as Lin Xiaoguai was with Shen Xiu.

Luo Yufang couldn’t express how happy she was.

One would say their initial kindness to the granddaughter-in-law was partly due to guilt over what their grandson had done, partly because she was carrying their great-grandchild, and partly because they were just not bad people.

But after living together these past few months, seeing how the granddaughter-in-law cared for them in every little way, trying her best to do the household chores, and treating their granddaughter like a little sister, their kindness towards her became even more heartfelt.

Knowing their own granddaughter, Xiu’er was good in all aspects, but she had a sweet tooth, which she could control in front of others but revealed entirely at home.

One shouldn’t underestimate this as a trivial matter; during these times, food expenses were significant, and if a girl was known to be gluttonous, she might be disliked and could even have trouble finding a husband.

In the past, whether when their daughter-in-law was alive or by herself, Luo Yufang instilled discipline over the granddaughter’s habit, but since the arrival of the granddaughter-in-law, that enforcement had lapsed.

According to the granddaughter-in-law’s words — with her brother and her around, would it really come to Xiu’er marrying into a family that couldn’t afford food?

Luo Yufang truly cherished her granddaughter; how could she want her to suffer any displeasure?

So she agreed, albeit reluctantly.

But Lin Xiaoguai really didn’t mind.

In her future era, how many would proudly call themselves food enthusiasts?

Little Aunt merely couldn’t take her eyes off tasty morsels and didn’t hassle or rob anyone; this minor flaw seemed utterly trivial to Lin Xiaoguai, and she even found it endearing, happily indulging her.

“No need, grandma, you rest.

I’ll be done very soon.”

She promptly prepared the silver carp, cutting it into segments, and then marinating it with salt, sugar, MSG, ginger, and wine — of course, this was all done behind grandma’s back, otherwise, she would have thought it wasteful since during these times, one had to be frugal with cooking ingredients like oil and vinegar, not to mention that their home didn’t have MSG at all.

Whenever possible, Lin Xiaoguai would use seasonings bought from the exchange store, not only because they made the food more delicious but also because they were more natural and healthy without additives.

However, the vegetables and meat at this time were still trustworthy for Lin Xiaoguai.

A few years later, this might not be the case.

“Oh, there’s not much fermented grain left,” Lin Xiaoguai said, taken aback as she opened the can.

She distinctly remembered there was almost half a can left yesterday.

“Let me look.” Luo Yufang hurried over upon hearing this and upon seeing just a fist-sized lump of fermented grain immediately scolded, “Shen Zhangming, see the mess you’ve made!”

“Uh…” Normally calm, Shen Zhangming shrank back a bit, embarrassed, “You weren’t home, and the neighbors, all women, how could I refuse to share?”

“You said the same thing last year!” Luo Yufang argued angrily, “Just how much fermented grain do we have?

I was planning to save some for Chi to eat when he returns.

Don’t you know what those women are like?”

Lin Xiaoguai was initially confused but then understood.

The neighborhood relations here were mostly good, but there were always a few discordant notes.

The people Grandma referred to were a few ladies who loved to mooch off others; they wouldn’t go to extreme lengths, but they bothered people.

Once, using the excuse that she bought them from the street, she took some small pumpkins from her space and made a plate of pumpkin cakes.

Those women came knocking when they smelled them, and wouldn’t leave, beating around the bush.

Grandma, with no other choice, kindly invited them to try and they each tucked away one to take home.

It looked like they didn’t take much, but she only made about ten to begin with, and they took a third in one go.

She used to like keeping the yard door open for the breeze, and the convenience of neighborhood interactions, since people were generally more honest at that time and thieves rare.

After that incident, she started always keeping her yard door closed.

She had been smuggling things out of her space bit by bit like a hamster and was not willing to let outsiders benefit from it.

“Grandpa, next time those few come by, just pretend you’re not home and don’t answer the door,” Lin Xiaoguai admonished without anger, her voice soft and devoid of ire.

Shen Zhangming sighed, “It’s not me who answered.

I was just stepping out to bring your grandma her meal when those women popped up from nowhere.”

“Then from now on, let them come looking for me!” Luo Yufang declared, uncharacteristically fierce.

She was indeed frustrated; those few always found ways to take advantage of her home little by little, and though it might not be a lot each time, it accumulated.

Lin Xiaoguai sighed inwardly upon seeing this.

What good would it do to find grandma?

Both elderly were too easy-going and not the type to stand up for themselves, otherwise why would those women always target their home?

Still, even if someone as seemingly shameless and brazen as her encountered those types, she might not know how to deal with them either.
