My Husband Is a Million Years Old Vampire-Chapter 139
Chapter 139: Chapter 139
The call with the bank ended just as Liam leaned back on his couch, his jaw tightening.
"They said tomorrow?" he muttered under his breath, eyes still fixed on the phone.
"Good. That works."
He needed that black card—needed the unlimited access. If the humiliation required money, he wanted no restrictions. No warnings. No transaction limits.
"Whatever it takes," he whispered. "Even if it means breaking the bank, Raymond will learn his place."
At that moment he rubbed his forehead, he was still seething. The rage was there—boiling, quiet, but fierce. The need to destroy was personal. It wasn’t just about Valentina anymore. It was about pride. About reputation.
About reminding everyone who Liam truly was, then, his phone buzzed again.
It was Chloe that was coming.
He stared at the screen, his fingers hovered over the answer button, uncertain. He wasn’t in the mood to deal with her. Not now.
The call ended. He thought that was it.
But it started ringing again. Same name.
This time, with a heavy sigh and clear irritation on his face, Liam tapped the green button and held the phone to his ear.
Immediately Chloe’s voice came through the phone, soft but laced with concern.
"Liam... I just wanted to hear from you. It’s been almost two days. You haven’t called, you haven’t come by... Is everything okay? Or are you trying to avoid me?"
Upon hearing what she just said, Liam sighed quietly. He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to steady the irritation crawling up his spine.
"I don’t have time for this, Chloe," he muttered. "Must I explain everything every time? I’ve been busy. Seriously busy."
"Busy?" Chloe repeated, the doubt in her voice was clear.
"Yes," he snapped, then softened slightly. " I told you before my family is preparing for the GSK deal. This is the time they start bidding for the top contracts—major ones. You know what that means. Every hand needs to be on deck."
Then he leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he spoke. freēwēbnovel.com
"We’re working around the clock, Chloe. I’ve barely had time to breathe. That’s what’s going on. Not avoidance. Not anything else."
At that moment Chloe went quiet.
"If this is about the postponed wedding," Liam continued, "you need to calm down. I’ve told you already, once this is out of the way, we’ll get everything back on track. Just give me a little time. That’s all I’m asking."
But on the other end, Chloe didn’t respond immediately. And when she did, her voice was firm—cold even.
"I don’t believe you, Liam," she said slowly. "You’re just using all this as an excuse."
Immediately Chloe’s voice sharpened even more as her frustration spilled through the phone.
"Liam, don’t insult my intelligence. The contract didn’t just appear yesterday. It’s been there. Nothing was canceled. The family’s always been working on it—so why now? Why is it now you’re suddenly too busy for me?"
Then Liam clenched his jaw, the grip on his phone tightening.
She didn’t stop. "Don’t act like I can’t see what’s happening. Valentina’s back, and suddenly, you’re ’focused’? You think I don’t know what’s going on? You’re using this whole GSK thing as a cover."
"Chloe," Liam’s tone turned defensive, almost impatient, "you’re reading into things that aren’t there."
"I’m not a fool, Liam," Chloe said, her voice quiet but firm. "You’re doing all this because of Valentina. It’s obvious. You think I don’t see it?"
Immediately Liam let out a slow breath. His mind was already a storm, and now Chloe was stirring up more.
He hesitated, choosing his next words carefully.
"Look... this has nothing to do with Valentina. You’re overreacting. Honestly. I don’t know where all this is coming from."
"You don’t?" Chloe scoffed bitterly. "You really think I don’t remember how you used to talk about her? How you always acted when her name came up? Even when we got together, I knew—deep down—I was just your second choice."
"Stop it," Liam snapped, but there was a crack in his voice. "That’s not true."
He didn’t want to admit that she was right. Not now. No one knew Valentina had rejected him. He never told a soul. Letting them believe he simply chose Chloe had always been more convenient—less humiliating.
Still, he pressed on, trying to shut it down.
"Chloe, I’m telling you, you’re overreacting. Nothing is going on between me and Valentina. I need you to stop imagining things. Just let me finish this project with my family, and once it’s done, we’ll put the wedding back on track. Okay?"
At that moment Chloe’s voice came sharp through the line. "That’s not even what I called for. What I want to know now is why I wasn’t invited."
Immediately Liam froze for a second. "Invited? To what?"
"Your class get-together, Liam!" Chloe snapped, her tone thick with disbelief. "I just got word that you’re going. I heard from someone reliable. And guess what? Everyone’s showing up with their partners—wives, fiancées, even girlfriends. Including Valentina. She’s coming with that Raymond guy."
Upon hearing what she just said, Liam’s eyes narrowed. His jaw locked immediately as Chloe kept going.
"So why wasn’t I invited? Or are you trying to make me look stupid? Am I not good enough to be seen with you anymore?"
As Chloe’s words hit him one after the other, Liam’s thoughts were already racing. He didn’t need anyone to tell him where Chloe got her information from. He clenched his fist.
’Avery hat manipulative, loud-mouthed witch.’
He should’ve known she’d run her mouth. She and Chloe weren’t exactly friends, but they talked just enough for trouble to start. She must’ve leaked it to get under his skin—and it worked.
But Liam wasn’t about to look weak now. Not with Chloe. Not with anyone.
He quickly cleared his throat. "Chloe, you’re overthinking this. I was just about to call you."
"Oh, really?"
"Yes," he said, forcing a calmness he didn’t feel. "I literally made the decision a few minutes ago. I was going to call and ask you to come along."
