Chapter 79: Chapter 79

As Raymond’s words hung in the air, a heavy silence followed, thick with irritation and disbelief.

Liam’s expression darkened instantly. His jaw clenched, his fingers twitching at his sides. His chest rose and fell sharply, his anger barely contained. Every single word Raymond spoke grated on him, like a taunt, like a challenge.

The way he spoke with such confidence, as if he truly belonged here, as if he truly had the means to match his arrogance—it made Liam’s blood boil.

He couldn’t such a nobody, would have the guts to even utter such nonsense.

Maria, on the other hand, looked as if she had swallowed something rotten. Her lips twisted in disgust, her nose slightly wrinkled. She crossed her arms tightly, tapping her perfectly manicured nails against her arm, trying to stop herself from snapping.

Chloe’s expression was no better. Her nails dug into her palms, and she had to stop herself from scoffing out loud. It was unbearable to listen to. The way Raymond spoke, the way Valentina actually smiled in response. It made Chloe want to spit.

Valentina, however, wasn’t the least bit bothered. If anything, she found herself smiling, just a little. There was something amusing about watching everyone silently rage while Raymond remained so relaxed.

And deep down, she knew—regardless of what they thought, regardless of what insults they whispered—Raymond could afford a car. Even if he could not afford something so expensive, he would never let her leave here empty-handed.

They finally reached the VIP section, where the most luxurious, high-end cars were displayed under the soft glow of the showroom lights. The air was different here—more exclusive, more refined. The cars gleamed under the lights, sleek and looking powerful, each one a statement of wealth and status.

At that moment another well-dressed saleswoman stepped forward, offering a warm, professional smile.

"Good afternoon," she said, her tone pleasant but efficient. "Can I ask what type of car you’re looking for? I’d be happy to guide you to the appropriate selection."

Her question lingered in the air, and for a brief moment, silence stretched between them.

Every pair of eyes turned toward Raymond, waiting, expecting. Would he fumble? Would he hesitate? Would he reveal himself to be nothing but a fraud?

The tension in the room was almost suffocating.

At that moment Maria crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing slightly as she assessed the situation. She knew exactly what she was going to do.

She wasn’t going to buy something outrageously expensive—not because she couldn’t afford it, but because she wanted to make a statement. She wanted to show the difference between their class, the gap that existed between her, Chloe, and Liam, and Raymond and Valentina.

Then a slow smirk played on her lips. If she openly stated the price range of the car she was going to buy, then what? What if Raymond actually dared to buy something more expensive? Wouldn’t that only confirm that something was wrong with him? That his wealth was questionable?

And it would be a slap on her face.

Her voice came out smooth, deliberately loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Well, I don’t intend to waste time," she said, flicking her hair over her shoulder. "I already have a budget in mind, and I don’t need to look at anything cheap." She paused, glancing at Raymond and Valentina with a knowing smirk. "But, of course, I don’t expect everyone here to afford something in my range."

Hearing her mother words Chloe chuckled beside her, clearly enjoying the moment. Liam, though silent, seemed deep in thought.

But Maria’s eyes weren’t on them anymore. They were on Raymond.

Something about him unsettled her.

She couldn’t understand it.

Everything about him—his posture, his calmness, the way he stood with an effortless confidence—felt foreign. He wasn’t the same man she once sneered at. He no longer looked like someone struggling to keep up in their world.

His face, clean-shaven, sharp, and undeniably handsome, was unsettling to her.

There was no trace of that ’nobody’ they once mocked getting married to Valentina.

And then, the memory hit her again,

She had seen him somewhere before, hadn’t she? Somewhere extravagant. Somewhere only people of wealth and status dared to step foot.

She narrowed her eyes, replaying the scene in her head.

"Yes., everything luxury, he was also on the CCTV recording."

She had seen him in one of the most exclusive luxury shopping malls.

Not just passing by. Shopping.

Dressed in top-quality brands, walking as if he belonged there.

Her stomach twisted uncomfortably.

Something about Raymond didn’t add up.

At that moment Chloe’s fingers curled into a fist, her perfectly manicured nails pressing against her palm as she kept her gaze fixed on Raymond. Every single place she had seen him—every single place—was an elite establishment.

She hadn’t thought much about it before. But now, standing here in yet another high-end dealership, the thought gnawed at her.

First, she saw him at the luxury jewelry store—the same one she had gone to for her custom pieces. Then, at that exclusive shopping mall, where only the wealthiest shopped without blinking at price tags.

And now, here. Her breath hitched slightly.

What was he doing in these places?

What was his real story?

She had been so convinced that he was nothing but a nobody, someone beneath them—someone unworthy of even being in the same conversation as them.

That was why they picked him for Valentina.

But if that was true, why was he constantly showing up in places reserved for the elite?

Maria, oblivious to Chloe’s spiraling thoughts, let out a light chuckle and turned to Liam, placing a hand on his arm as she tilted her head ever so slightly.

"Wouldn’t it be better if you just bought the car for Chloe?" she suggested smoothly, loud enough for everyone to hear.

At that moment Liam’s jaw tightened.

Maria wasn’t making a simple suggestion—she was making a statement.

"You’re going to buy it eventually, aren’t you?" Maria pressed, her voice dripping with certainty. "You and Chloe are getting married soon, and you’ve promised her a car. Why not just get it now? It would be the perfect way to show your sincerity."
