Chapter 42 - Tensions and Threats

Today, the weather looked clear, with no signs of rain showering Tokyo like yesterday, even though the weather forecast predicted moderate rainfall around the city.

This morning, nothing seemed unusual at the young, happily married couple's residence. Everything appeared as normal as the days before until the apartment's doorbell rang a minute ago, indicating that someone had come to visit. But who could it be?

It was still early for visitors. Tetsuya always showed up unannounced at any time, like two weeks ago, when Tetsuya knocked on their door in the middle of the night just because he was hungry and had nothing at home. He claimed he was too lazy and bored to order food, and you can guess how Renji reacted then. Of course, he was angry and annoyed because his rest was disturbed. But since Tetsuya was his cousin, Renji tried to suppress his anger and even served him a plate of spaghetti. After eating, Renji promptly sent him home, refusing to let him stay overnight in the guest room, which Renji had already converted into a nursery.

Aira limped slightly as she walked toward the door. Before opening it, she peeked through the small glass hole in the door, wary of strangers. Renji always emphasized not to open the door carelessly, fearing it might be a criminal.

Like this morning.

Aira's body trembled as her round eyes caught sight of a grown man with long brown hair and a face that resembled hers. She stepped back, still in shock, as if she had seen a ghost.

"Him..." Aira whispered in fear.

Tears began to stream down her cheeks, her expression dominated by overwhelming fear.

Renji, who couldn't find his wife anywhere, finally went to the front door to see if she was there. Since the doorbell kept ringing, he opened the door to greet the guest. And sure enough, she was.

"Honey!" Renji panicked as he approached Aira, who was visibly terrified. "Are you hurt?" he asked anxiously.

Aira pointed directly at the door, but her face refused to look in that direction. Curious, Renji peeked and immediately understood why his wife was so frightened after seeing who was standing outside their home.

Renji's arms wrapped tightly around Aira, holding her in a protective embrace. "Calm down, I'm here. Don't be afraid," he whispered, trying to soothe her.

Aira's sobs grew louder, and her hands clutched tightly at the front of Renji's shirt, seeking something to hold onto. "I-I'm scared, Renji-kun."

"He won't be able to hurt you, I promise," Renji said, kissing the top of Aira's head. Then, with one hand, he opened the door, revealing the towering figure of the man standing before them.

"What do you want here, Raiden Hoshino?" Renji asked, his icy gaze piercing, with a murderous aura radiating from him.

Raiden glanced briefly at Aira, trembling in Renji's embrace, and he felt a twisted sense of satisfaction at her fear.

"Leave before I do something you'll regret," Renji threatened, his tone deadly serious.

"I apologize if my presence has disturbed you."

"Your presence is not welcome here. Get out of my sight now!" Renji snapped.

"Calm down, Young Master Renji. I'm only here to deliver an invitation to Hinami's engagement party," Raiden said, handing over a pink invitation to Renji as Aira refused to look at him.

"Now that your business is done, leave."

"Let me speak with Aira for a moment. There's something I need to tell her."

Renji sneered, making Raiden immediately uneasy. "Do you want me to handle this the hard way or the easy way, Raiden Hoshino?" Renji hissed, his patience wearing thin.

"But..."

"Leave, or I'll call Tetsuya to drag you out of here," Renji threatened, using his cousin's name as a warning, and it worked.

"N-no. In that case, I'll take my leave. And Aira, I hope you'll come," Raiden said before leaving.

Aira's lower lip was slightly swollen from being bitten repeatedly as she tried to suppress her sobs, ensuring Raiden wouldn't hear them. If he heard her, it would undoubtedly bring him joy and satisfaction, knowing he had successfully intimidated her.

"Renji-kun... I'm scared..." she sobbed, her face streaked with tears.

"Don't be afraid, honey. I won't let him lay a single finger on you," Renji reassured her, gently wiping her cheeks and kissing each of her eyes to stop her tears. His method worked. Aira's body went limp, and Renji took her into the bedroom, laying her down on the bed.

"Rest for a while. I'll call the doctor to check on you."

"I'm fine, my husband. I'm only frightened and shocked. Our baby is okay," she replied, tenderly stroking her swollen belly.

"Are you sure?" He asked, his eyes widening in shock.

"Yes, I just have to lie down. Don't leave me, please. I'm scared," she cried, tears streaming down her face.

Renji smiled, his knuckles grazing Aira's cheek. "I won't leave you no matter what."

"Thanks," Aira whispered, closing her eyes quietly. Fidely, Renji sat beside her, holding her slightly cool hand tightly.

Honestly, Renji's heart ached to see his wife so terrified. Starting today, he would tighten security around Aira, as it wasn't unlikely that Raiden would try to harm her again. There was even a possibility that Raiden might betray them again, just like before. Renji had always feared this about Tetsuya's decision, which he considered reckless—rehiring a traitor.

What was Tetsuya planning behind all this?

"I hope you're not making a mistake, Tetsuya," Renji thought.

The matter with Yuna Kenzaki would have to be set aside for now, as the situation was too serious to ignore. But don't worry, Renji had prepared a big surprise for the red-haired girl—one she would never forget for the rest of her life.

Tetsuya's steps were steady as he climbed the stone stairs individually. The vast expanse of lush pine trees surrounded the cemetery, making the area beautiful and serene, far from eerie, thanks to the natural scenery. One hand was tucked into his pocket, while the other held a bouquet of red roses he had bought on the way to the cemetery after Yamato had placed an order at a famous flower shop.

Tetsuya had chosen red roses because they were his late mother's favourite. He even remembered his mother telling him that his father had proposed to her with red roses. This romantic flower was always his choice when visiting her grave to pray.

The cemetery was quiet, with only a handful of people seen praying. The bouquet of red roses was placed alongside some oranges Yamato had brought. Tetsuya lit incense and prayed solemnly in front of his mother's altar, with Yamato joining in. After finishing his prayers, Tetsuya asked Yamato to leave him alone. Yamato obeyed, stepping away but keeping a watchful eye.

A smile graced Tetsuya's face as he looked at the photo of his late mother in her youth. She was stunningly beautiful—no wonder his famously cold and aloof father had fallen for her.

"How are you, Mom?" he asked, gently stroking her gravestone. There was no response, only the wind rustling through the trees. Perhaps that was his mother's way of answering.

"Forgive your son for not visiting often lately," he said with a small, guilty smile, feeling bad for always being too busy for her.

"Don't be mad at me, Mom. If you want to be mad, be mad at Renji. He's always giving me so much work, not letting me have any free time," he complained, monologuing to himself.

A brief silence fell, and no single word escaped their lips. Tetsuya sat still for a moment, then tilted his head up, gazing at the sky above, which had started to turn grey, no longer as bright as it had been when he left earlier.

Tetsuya thought it might rain and felt sad because his mother's grave would get wet if it did. He feared that his mother might catch a cold, but then he realized the truth—his mother would never feel pain again. She was at peace in heaven. Yet, he could only feel close to her during moments like this, when her ashes were kept in the urn beneath the ground.

"I'll join you soon, Mom, so wait for me there," Tetsuya whispered sadly.

"If I had more time, maybe I could bring my partner and introduce them to Kaasan." Suddenly, Tetsuya felt melancholic.

His eyes welled up with tears, but he didn't want to show his sadness to his mother. Tetsuya forced a smile, though his heart was screaming with grief.

Tetsuya always tried to be strong, never showing his weak or powerless side to anyone, including Renji. But when he was near his mother, all the defences he had built so painstakingly collapsed instantly. His heart was too fragile when it came to her, the first person to give him love, care, and life.

Deep in his heart, Tetsuya longed to live an everyday life like everyone else. Still, he had always suppressed this feeling, not letting it take control of his heart and mind.

Tetsuya understood that his destiny and life path differed from others because he was an Ishikawa, carrying a heavy responsibility.

For nearly half an hour, Tetsuya sat at his mother's grave, talking to her and sharing his worries and complaints. He even told her that Renji had gotten married and would soon become a father. He also mentioned Saki, his sparring partner at Asahi Café, and Issei, whom he liked.

The rumble of thunder echoed through the sky, followed by dark clouds, signalling that rain would soon pour down. Since many tasks were still needed today, Tetsuya ended his visit and hurried to leave the cemetery.

Everything felt normal, but as he was about to descend the stairs, Tetsuya accidentally crossed paths with Hiroshi and his men.

Tetsuya stopped in the middle of the stairs, and so did Hiroshi, standing side by side.

"What are you doing here?!" The old man shouted angrily at Tetsuya, holding a personal grudge against him.

The old man's dark gaze met Tetsuya's cold stare. Tetsuya responded calmly, "Ah, so it's you, old man. I'm glad to see you're healthy and didn't die." He said casually, not afraid at all, even though he was facing an enemy.

"Tell me, what are you doing here?!" Hiroshi shouted, angered by Tetsuya's presence, the one responsible for him losing an eye.

"None of your business," Tetsuya snapped.

"Watch your tone! This is Mr. Hiroshi Okada!" One of Hiroshi's guards shouted, reprimanding Tetsuya's rudeness.

"I don't care as long as it's not the god of death. I'm not afraid," Tetsuya retorted indifferently, then continued walking away from the cemetery.

One of Hiroshi's men pointed a gun directly at Tetsuya, threatening him, and the atmosphere became tense. Fortunately, the cemetery was quiet, with few people around, so there wasn't much commotion. However, if it had been anyone else, they would have been scared, begging for mercy to avoid being killed. But Tetsuya only laughed, as if he wasn't afraid of dying and had a spare life to burn.

"Go ahead, if you're courageous," Tetsuya challenged, his cold eyes intimidating.

"You..."

"Hold your fire. There will come a time when I'll be the one to end this brat," Hiroshi replied coldly.

Tetsuya smiled briefly. "I look forward to that moment, old man. See you again." Tetsuya said his farewell while waving his hand.

With a calm demeanour, Tetsuya descended the stairs one by one, not bothered by the dozens of cold, hate-filled eyes staring at him with malice and resentment.

Fortunately, Tetsuya wasn't caught sitting at his mother's grave; if he had been, his biggest secret would have been revealed to Hiroshi, making things much more complicated for him.

In truth, Tetsuya's family relationship on his late mother's side was complicated, as Hiroshi was his stepfather.

Tetsuya had been searching for details about his late mother's family for a long time so that no problems would arise in the future. He feared that Hiroshi might discover that Tetsuya was the son of his stepdaughter, who had been missing for a long time. It wasn't surprising that Tetsuya's grandfather, Kaito Ishikawa, hated his late mother so much that he disapproved of their marriage, especially since Hiroshi's child was one of his business rivals. Because of this, Tetsuya was determined to protect Renji and Aira, ensuring they wouldn't end up with a tragic fate like his parents and that their children wouldn't grow up in a dark, lonely life without parental love, as he did.

Sighing heavily, Tetsuya walked toward a large tree near the cemetery area.

Tetsuya's mood soured immediately after meeting Hiroshi. After his earlier encounter with the woman Medusa, things only got worse. He thought a cup of Latte might help restore his mood.

"Why have you been hiding all this time and not helping?" He scolded Yamato, who had been hiding in the tree, observing the situation from a distance like a ninja.

"Didn't you say you didn't want to be disturbed?" Yamato defensively replied, jumping down from the tree safely.

"True, but you're still sitting up there watching when I'm in a tight spot. Should I buy you some popcorn to make it more fun to watch?" Tetsuya snapped irritably.

"Sorry for my negligence." Yamato bowed, apologizing.

"Forget it, just take me to Asahi Café now."

"But at 11:00 AM, there's a meeting with the investors."

"You go and attend in my place as punishment."

"I understand, Young Master Tetsuya", Yamato replied obediently, not refusing.

When they reached the car parked near the cemetery, Yamato opened the back door for Tetsuya. Once the boss was inside, Yamato entered and sat in the front seat.

"Don't speed", Tetsuya said, still feeling shaken after driving recklessly on the road earlier.

"Understood, Young Master." Yamato drove at a normal speed, leaving the cemetery area.
