Chapter 220 - Chapter 220: Turmoil in the Land of Wind
The Uchiha clan had been in the Land of Rain for quite some time.
With so many of their elite members dispatched there, Jiraiya estimated that the battle had already concluded. It was highly likely that the Uchiha forces were already on their way back.
Once they returned and had time to recover, Jiraiya planned to lead an immediate campaign against the Land of Wind.
As for Hiruzen Sarutobi, he would remain in Konoha to guard against potential attacks from the Land of Lightning or the Land of Water.
"I understand," Sarutobi said with a nod.
...
"I've eliminated the Daimyō without leaving any trace of my identity."
A few days later, Jiraiya completed his assassination mission and returned to the village. The operative assigned to the task reported back to him.
"You did well," Jiraiya said with a satisfied smile. He then pulled out a scroll and handed it to Orochimaru.
"This is the Reanimation Jutsu, developed by the Second Hokage. It allows you to summon the dead using their remains and bind them to your command in battle. Study it carefully."
In the original timeline, Orochimaru had significantly improved upon this jutsu.
By giving it to him now, Jiraiya hoped to accelerate that process.
Orochimaru took the scroll, his golden eyes gleaming with interest.
"Now this is fascinating..."
Then, as if remembering something, he looked up. "I want to participate in the invasion of the Land of Wind."
Now that he was back in the village, he had already heard of the large-scale attack Konoha was preparing.
"Fine by me," Jiraiya agreed without hesitation. Letting Orochimaru witness the fragility of life firsthand would only deepen his obsession with immortality and push him further down the path of research.
With that, Orochimaru took his leave.
Not long after, Sakumo Hatake entered the Hokage's office.
"Jiraiya-sama, you called for me?" he asked respectfully.
"I need you to take your sister and lead an Anbu squad to the Rain Nation," Jiraiya instructed.
"Your mission is to locate a member of the Uzumaki clan named Nagato. Once you find him, do not engage—just report back to me immediately."
"Understood, Jiraiya-sama," Sakumo said without question. As the Anbu Commander, he followed orders without hesitation.
With that, he departed.
Jiraiya then left the Hokage's office and made his way to the Senju compound, where he had been residing for quite some time.
By the time he arrived, Tsunade had already prepared lunch for him.
"How is the medical corps coming along?" he asked after their meal.
"Thanks to your support, things are progressing smoothly. It won't be long before we have a fully functional medical division. I've even found several promising students at the Academy who show potential for medical ninjutsu." Tsunade smiled, clearly enjoying the work.
"The medical corps is vital to the village's future, so stay focused on it," Jiraiya reminded her.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure Konoha has plenty of skilled medics," she assured him.
"In that case... I should reward you properly," Jiraiya said with a smirk before lifting her into his arms and carrying her toward the bedroom.
Before long, the sound of a shifting bed frame filled the air.
...
The assassination of the Fire Daimyō sent shockwaves throughout the Land of Fire.
Rumors spread quickly among the civilians, plunging them into panic. After all, the Daimyō held great prestige among the people.
However, the ninja population remained largely unaffected. Their direct leader was the Hokage, not the Daimyō. As long as the Hokage was in power, the loss of the Daimyō had little impact on them.
To maintain control, Jiraiya dispatched a team to "investigate" the Daimyō's death. In reality, their true mission was to ensure that the palace officials remained under Konoha's control and did not attempt to install a new Daimyō without Konoha's approval.
...
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting was underway in the Land of Wind.
The village's upper echelon had gathered—every jōnin and elite jōnin was present.
"What do we do now?" one of them asked grimly. "The Tailed Beast has been captured, Lord Kazekage is dead, and Konoha has completely crushed the Rain ninja. Once their forces return, they'll definitely attack us next!"
"Our top priority should be electing a new Kazekage and rallying our forces to prepare for war," an elder declared. "We should also seek aid from the Land of Earth and other great nations. There's no way they'll just stand by and watch Konoha wipe us out."
"Agreed. A new Kazekage must be chosen immediately to lead us against the Fire Nation's invasion," another elder said in support.
Sunagakure was already in chaos. Leaderless and demoralized, many ninja had abandoned the village, seeing no hope of victory.
"Even if we choose a Kazekage, we can't stand against Konoha alone," another jōnin argued. "Expecting other nations to help us is foolish. The Land of Earth tried to reclaim our Tailed Beast from Konoha, and they lost the Four-Tails and their perfect jinchūriki in the process. No other nation will dare challenge them now!"
"I say we surrender," another elder spoke up. "Konoha's power is overwhelming. If we resist, we'll all die, and our country will be destroyed. Surrendering might be the only way to preserve our land!"
"Surrender?" A young Rasa slammed his fist on the table, eyes burning with anger. "Have you all lost your minds? Do you really think Konoha will spare us if we surrender?"
"Konoha killed the Kazekage! Their goal is to erase the Land of Wind completely. If we submit, we're walking into our own graves!"
"Our only hope is to fight! Even if it costs us everything, we must resist!"
The younger generation of ninja stood up in agreement, their voices filled with determination.
"I refuse to surrender!" one of them shouted.
"If we give up now, we'll be nothing but slaves to Konoha!" another declared.
"Handing our lives over to the mercy of an enemy is the height of foolishness!"
Tension filled the room as the debate raged on—resistance or surrender?
One thing was certain: the Land of Wind was on the brink of its greatest crisis yet.
