Otherworld Advance Team-Chapter 52 - 48 Armed
52: Chapter 48: Armed
52 -48: Armed
After the check-up, the five members were led to the arsenal, where all the weaponry and equipment of the front-line headquarters were stored.
The weapons for each individual had already been secretly transported here in advance.
The basic standard equipment for the team members included hand grenades, magic wands, and daggers, correspondingly adjusted according to individual needs.
For instance, Hu Daoke, with a lower magical ability, didn’t need to carry a magic wand.
And for the two girls on the team, headquarters specially prepared highly powerful magic crystal pistols for their self-defense.
Opening his box, Luo’er found his own AK47 automatic rifle laying quietly inside.
Its appearance didn’t differ significantly from the most popular AKM model in Otherworld, save for an additional recoil-brake at the muzzle and a specially prepared silencer.
Instead of the old-fashioned, rounded magazine, it had a petite bourgeoisie-style Picatinny rail to facilitate the mounting of optical sights.
A Picatinny rail was also installed underneath the handguard to facilitate the attachment of a tactical grip.
Picking up the rifle, Luo’er found it slightly lighter than the same model he had previously handled.
According to Wang Xu, most parts of the gun, apart from some necessary components, were made of the latest composite materials to reduce its weight as much as possible.
A safety trigger mechanism was located on the left side of the rifle.
It was linked to the one on the right, allowing for the quickest possible adjustment of the firearm to a ready-to-fire state.
The rifle even had a special empty chamber design, similar to the 81-type rifle of the last century, which required an additional pull of the bolt lever to reset once engaged.
Luo’er held the rifle and made a few gestures.
The handguard and rifle stock felt like wood, but upon closer examination, it was clear they were made of a composite material that was much lighter than real wood.
In addition to the rifle, headquarters specially equipped him with a compact tactical handgun, complete with a silencer and subsonic ammunition, primarily for self-defense and stealth operations.
Aside from these, as the commanding officer of the team, Luo’er had to carry a flare gun for communication with team members in the Otherworld where there was no radio.
This made his already heavily laden tactical equipment even more cumbersome.
Baiyue opened her box and found the bolt-action sniper rifle she very much desired.
Her rifle was modified from a Winchester M70 hunting rifle, but the materials used were mostly composite, and the design underwent certain adjustments.
Firstly, the ammunition was fed from a 10-round magazine, eliminating the need for one-by-one reloading.
Secondly, Picatinny rails were installed on the barrel and frontal body of the gun to facilitate the installation of optical sights and bipods.
A removable muzzle brake was installed on the barrel’s muzzle, which could be removed to install a silencer.
Besides these, the overall appearance of the gun didn’t significantly differ from the M70 model.
This was a specific condition set by the headquarters when contracting Northern Heavy Industries; the gun’s original aesthetics are to be retained while modern enhancements are made.
This was because, according to the United Nations’ rules regarding weapon exports, weapons designed after the 1980s are not allowed to be exported to Otherworld.
If the weapons they use were identified and reported to the United Nations, it could cause a great deal of trouble.
The supporting weapon that Hu Daoke uses is the US Army airborne model M249 light machine gun.
Even though it uses small-caliber bullets, the weight is just right for them, perfect for the long-distance raids of their light infantry reconnaissance team.
Cheng Ziang was not equipped with a firearm, instead, he was given a relatively short straight knife.
This knife is a ring-hilt knife model but the ring part was removed and a handguard was added, lending it a touch of scientific charm.
The sheath of the knife was quite interesting.
Two-thirds of it on the blade side was open, leaving only one-third.
There was a movable buckle at the mouth of the sheath to secure the handguard, preventing the knife from easily falling out.
The benefit of this two-thirds open design was that when the knife was on his back, Cheng Ziang could easily draw it out for combat without needing to remove the sheath from his back.
He only needed to pull open the movable buckle to take the knife out.
And once one-third of the knife has been pulled out, he could draw it forward.
The location of the handguard and the sheath had protrusions and recesses that locked into each other, so he could easily position the knife when sheathing it.
This meticulous design made Cheng Ziang instantly enamoured with this weapon.
As the close combatant of the team, the headquarters surprisingly complied with his suggestion and prepared throwing knives for him.
There were ten of these knives in total, distributed around his waist, legs, and strapped to the sheath, which he could easily pull out.
As a compromise, Cheng Ziang was given a revolver as a supplement for long-range firepower.
As the team’s mage, Tangmo was not equipped with either rifle or close combat weapon; she only carried a magic wand and magic crystal pistol.
Although Luo’er was constantly concerned about her equipment, it was clear that Tangmo’s physique could not withstand carrying a heavy load if going on a long journey.
For the time being, Luo’er was at a loss what to do and could only hope that the magic crystal pistols developed by Otherworld Weapon Research Center could carry the weight of the entire battle.
After changing clothes, Luo’er removed the decorations from his body and washed off his dyed hair, revealing his black hair and dark green eyes.
Even though they had learned that half-elves were not respected in Otherworld before their arrival, Luo’er had no intention of hiding his race.
Seeing Luo’er with black hair and blue eyes standing next to her, Tangmo couldn’t help but being reminded of the times when they were a couple and felt somewhat melancholic.
Luo’er checked his handgun and tucked it into its holster.
His movement seemed somewhat restricted with all the equipment on him, and it was clear that he would need some time to adjust to this load.
However, when it comes to loading, Luo’er couldn’t help but look at Hu Daoke.
He had just tested the huge backpack prepared for him, which not only contained daily necessities but also the team’s ammunition.
The backpack looked stuffed full.
Nevertheless, Hu Daoke clearly didn’t seem troubled by this weight.
He could be seen turning his neck and even hopping a bit on the spot.
It appeared as if his backpack was filled with cotton.
The headquarters had designated the five of them as members of an adventurer’s guild and prepared badges for them that they hung around their necks in place of their original pendants.
However, considering the level of their equipment, each of them had also been provided with a cloak and a weapon sheath to use when entering cities, so as not to be conspicuous.
After all, compared to the adventurers in all of Otherworld, Luo’er and his team’s equipment would undoubtedly stand out as the best.
Luo’er attempted to carry his backpack, finding it not particularly heavy, but he knew that the weight would surely become a burden during their future journeys.
But there was no avoiding it.
Apart from the four magazines secured on the carrying case, Luo’er had to prepare an extra 240 rounds of ammunition in the backpack to meet the demands of their mission.
“Speaking of which, aren’t there runes in Otherworld that can reduce weight?
Why aren’t we equipped with those?” Hu Daoke, upon seeing his backpack, quickly wore a sour expression on his face.
Even though he could withstand the weight, he was in the same predicament as Luo’er – the prolonged walking would definitely be burdensome for him.
“Do you think that runes can just be doodled on?
They are the secret of the High-peak people; without some connections, how would they reveal it to you?” Wang Xu shook his head as he spoke.
The Gravity Reduction Rune is a subset of the Anti-Gravity Rune, which can be understood as a weaker version of the Anti-Gravity Rune.
The air fleet that the High-peak Dwarves relied on was built on anti-gravity magic technology, so for them, any magic related to anti-gravity is extremely vital.
“Now we’re in for it.” Hu Daoke sighed, reluctantly shouldering his backpack.
Wang Xu looked at everyone and said seriously, “You are the first expeditionary forces dispatched by the headquarters, so everything is still in the exploratory stage, whether it’s equipment or treatment, it will only get better.
And the subsequent expeditionary forces dispatched will also need the experience you gained for reference, so in a way, you could all be considered pioneers.”
“I don’t find what you just said comforting at all,” Luo’er countered without mercy.
“Is this what they call ‘pie in the sky’?” Cheng Ziang suddenly remarked from the side.
“Regardless, after preparations are made, report to the command room.
We are about to issue a mission and you will set off immediately,” announced Wang Xu after a cough.
“Wow, can’t we stay here for a night?” Hu Daoke asked, spreading his hands out.
“We don’t have that much time to spare.
In a few months, if we don’t get the information we want, multinational forces will invade Otherworld, and that will be a problem.”
“Well, why don’t we just not fight at all?” Schuler suggested nonchalantly.
“It’s not as simple as you think.
If we win this war and everyone starts dividing the spoils, you won’t even get scraps.”
“So the top brass still wants to fight?” Luo’er asked.
“That’s the high-ups’ business.
It’s irrelevant to us.
We just need to do well in our own jobs,” said Wang Xu, pinching the bridge of his nose before continuing, “After you have all prepared, report to Headquarters ready for the mission.”
“Understood!” Luo’er saluted.
Wang Xu was taken aback before saying: “Also, in Otherworld, no more saluting, just stand at attention.”
“Why so cautious?” Hu Daoke said, shaking his head.
“We start once the preparations are completed!” Luo’er put his backpack on again, slung his gun over his shoulder, and told everyone.
“Luo’er…” Just as Luo’er was about to get up, his sleeve was grabbed, and Tangmo’s timid voice came from behind him.
“What’s wrong?” He turned his head to ask.
“I’m a little scared!” Tangmo confided, looking at him timidly.
Facing the impending new world, Tangmo was somewhat fearful, especially as they were setting out as a combat team, not knowing what dangers they might encounter along the way, making her panic inexplicably.
“It’s okay, I’m here.” Luo’er took her small hand and said gently.
Then he turned his head to find Baiyue looking at him with strange eyes.
He was taken aback for a moment, then reached out instinctively to her.
After hesitating for a moment, Baiyue reached out her hand and let Luo’er hold it.
“Don’t worry.
As long as I’m here, I won’t let anyone get hurt.” Luo’er looked at the crowd and made a solemn promise.
“No need, just take care of the two of them.” Cheng Ziang expressed no gratitude, glanced at him and the two girls, and coldly returned his knife to the scabbard before leaving the room.
“Um…” Hu Daoke looked at Luo’er’s hand, held together with the two girls, and spoke somewhat speechlessly, “Luo’er, your promise isn’t very convincing!”
