72 -68: Withdrawal

Luoer and Tangmo, stepping out of the room, were on guard in the corridor with their guns.

Seeing Cheng Ziang emerge, Luoer waved and the trio promptly began their retreat.

Emerging from the building without a hitch, they returned to the window ledge they had just occupied.

By now, it was so dark that they couldn’t see their hands in front of their faces, and the wind and rain were getting heavier.

Such weather hindered their retreat but also effectively concealed their tracks.

Once they left the mansion, the heavy rain would wipe out any trace of them.

Just as the trio were making their way through the garden area, an urgent chiming echoed from inside the mansion.

They knew it was an alarm signal, signifying that the guards had discovered Tarute’s body.

Teams of guards began to search outside the mansion, making their retreat plan difficult to execute.

Fortunately, Luoer had an alternate plan.

He pulled a glow stick from his pocket and snapped it, which quickly emitted a pale light.

He then waved the glow stick towards the sniper team’s position a few times.

If the sniper team hadn’t dozed off, they should see the results shortly.

Boom!!!

Suddenly, a violent explosion reverberated from another direction of the mansion, drawing all the guards there.

The explosion was triggered by an explosive laid by Baiyue to cover Luoer and his team’s retreat.

Before launching their attack, Luoer had instructed Baiyue to set up explosives on another side of the mansion to cover their retreat.

The explosives were outside the walls, aimed directly at the sniper team.

Detonated by a blasting cap, the explosives needed Baiyue’s sniper rifle to trigger the cap.

So she had a glow stick attached in the direction of the blasting cap.

This way, even in pitch black night, she could accurately hit the blasting cap and trigger the explosion.

Of course, this plan required an accurate shot.

Luckily for them, this was not a difficult task for Baiyue.

The explosion lured away the guards, allowing the trio to creep under the dark to the outer perimeter of the mansion.

Despite very low visibility, Luoer thankfully remembered the way they came.

They helped each other cross over the walls and then began their retreat towards the sniper team’s position.

Arriving at the sniper team’s position, Luoer whistled, and Baiyue and Hu Daoke got up from their sniper points.

With a strong wave of his hand, Luoer loudly told them, “Retreat!”

They promptly returned to their camp, and with their equipment already packed, they braved the icy rain to start their escape.

Luoer knew that once these people were alerted, they would not let up easily.

They would surely comb through the surrounding areas of the mansion, eventually discovering their gathering spot.

So, with steadfast decisiveness, he instructed everyone to retreat overnight to avoid being caught by the pursuers, with the heavy rain erasing their traces.

Having travelled since nightfall till daybreak under constant rain, the rain finally stopped at the break of dawn.

By that time, the five were thoroughly drenched, but their clothing managed to keep their body warmth in, although they inevitably felt the cold deep within their bones.

After retreating almost fifty kilometers overnight, Luoer confirmed that they would not be pursued any further, so he had everyone find a suitable spot for camping and setting up a fire.

Everyone sat around the campfire, their bodies emitting steam and looking sleepy.

Luoer let them rest after Tangmo had sent all their collected intelligence to the frontline headquarters, then took the first watch on their behalf.

Sitting cross-legged in front of the campfire, Luoer felt a huge weight lifted.

The assassination and the mystery of the missing armory had been weighing heavily on his heart, but now, having put them both behind, he felt incomprehensibly relieved.

While he was also extremely tired, he made sure his team members rested first.

Tangmo curled up beside him, using his thigh as a pillow without moving even in the intense heat of the fire.

Luoer gently combed her hair to make sure it didn’t catch fire.

Looking up, he saw Cheng Ziang awake, his tired gaze fixated on Luoer.

“Not going to sleep?” Luoer asked.

Cheng Ziang didn’t speak but stubbornly shook his head.

“That guy…” Luoer hesitated before finally summoning the courage to ask.

“Dead!” Cheng Ziang briefly replied.

“I see.” Luoer looked down, unable to hold back a sigh.

“Do you regret killing him?” Cheng Ziang asked coldly.

“No, I just think he didn’t deserve to die.” Luoer replied in a low voice.

Cheng Ziang coldly watched him and after a snort, he stopped talking.

He shook his head, then grabbed his knife, stood up, and prepared to leave.

“Where are you going?” Luoer asked.

“Going foraging!” Cheng Ziang replied without turning back.

Their supplies were depleted during their time outside Tarute’s mansion, so now he had no choice but to look for something to eat.

“Take a gun with you!” Luoer suggested.

Cheng Ziang turned back to look at Luoer.

Facing Luoer’s concerned gaze, he seemed a little confused. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

After a moment’s hesitation, he took out the captured Enfield Rifle from Hu Daoke’s backpack, shoved a magazine in his pocket, and then walked away without looking back.

Watching Cheng Ziang leave, Luoer let out a slight sigh of relief.

This guy, despite his odd temper, was good to the rest of the team.

While he was thinking, Luoer suddenly felt pressure on his other leg.

Looking down, he saw Baiyue propping her head on his thigh.

Although her eyes were closed and she was breathing evenly, Luoer knew she wasn’t asleep.

Looking at Tangmo on one side and Baiyue on the other, Luoer helplessly shook his head, reaching out to pat their heads.

Hu Daoke lay on his back in front of the fire, his open mouth issuing a cacophony of snores.

Baiyue’s leg suddenly twitched, kicking him in the shins.

Hu Daoke grunted in his sleep but didn’t wake up, the snoring stopped abruptly.

“You guys…” Luo’er looked at them, a mix of amusement and disbelief on his face.

The group had slept for about five hours, awoken by the smell of barbecue just before noon.

Hu Daoke sat on the ground in confusion, rubbing his leg and muttering, “Why is my leg numb?”

“Go wash up and get something to eat!” The body of some unknown animal was being roasted on the fire, sparking and dripping with fat.

Luo’er sprinkled the last of their spices, and the irresistible aroma began to spread.

“What’s this?” Hu Daoke looked at the tantalizing roast of unknown creature, swallowing hard as he asked.

“Not certain, it should be a deer!” Luo’er wasn’t exactly sure, because this was an animal native to Otherworld.

It looked like a deer but was only as big as a dog.

“Can we eat this?” Hu Daoke asked excitedly, forgetting entirely about Luo’er’s suggestion to wash up.

“If you don’t want it, don’t eat!” Cheng Ziang sat cross-legged by the fire, face in his hands, speaking coldly.

Hu Daoke was about to retort when Luo’er quickly explained, “This was caught by Ziang.”

“Yo, little brother, not bad!” Hu Daoke said with a grin.

“Humph!” Cheng Ziang shot him a glance in response.

“Luo’er, Luo’er, I want a taste, feed me!” Tangmo crawled to Luo’er, hanging onto him and speaking coquettishly.

“Oh.” Luo’er quickly pulled out a dagger from his side, slicing off a small piece of meat and feeding it to her.

“It’s a bit bland!” Tangmo chewed, critiquing unabashedly.

“Is it?” Luo’er looked at her, quickly sprinkling more salt.

“Want to try again?” Luo’er continued to feed her another piece.

“Delicious!” Tangmo closed her eyes delightfully and declared.

Luo’er nodded in satisfaction, only to see that Baiyue on the other side was gazing at him with expectation, not uttering a word.

“Want some?” Luo’er sliced another piece and offered it to Baiyue, who was about to take it when she suddenly covered her mouth, quickly taking the slice and turning around to eat it.

Seeing Baiyue still behaving in her usual way, Luo’er could only sigh.

After the meat was ready, the group began to eat.

Hu Daoke, as usual, ate the most, ultimately eating up all the remaining meat, even gnawing the bones clean.

“Nice, brother!” Hu Daoke leaned back against his pack, satisfactorily gesturing a thumbs-up to Cheng Ziang only to be met with an eye roll.

By now the weather had cleared, but the squad had to stay put and wait for orders from headquarters for their next course of action.

Full and satisfied, Luo’er yawned, beginning to feel an irresistible drowsiness.

Seeing his state, Tangmo quickly said, “You’ve been up all night, Luo’er, go to sleep!”

“Hmm.” Luo’er didn’t refuse, he was about to lie down when…

“Come, come, lie next to sister!” Tangmo patted her thigh invitingly.

“No need.” Feeling both amused and exasperated, Luo’er declined her offer, laying down near the fire with his cloak.

Baiyue was now responsible for watching over the team.

She climbed up a tall tree and sat against the trunk, keeping watch.

Hu Daoke fondly remembered the meat they just ate and took his Enfield Rifle to the forest, trying to catch another one to roast.

Cheng Ziang couldn’t keep his eyes open any longer, he dozed off against a tree that was quite far from the fire, with no qualms about the cold.

All was peaceful.

Finally without worry, Luo’er closed his eyes and drifted into deep sleep.

Luo’er wasn’t sure how long he slept, but fatigue makes sleep seem short, so short that he woke before he could dream.

It was already evening.

Hu Daoke had actually managed to catch another deer-like creature and was roasting it on the fire with Baiyue.

Cheng Ziang had also woken up and maintained his usual lethargic demeanor, idly watching the two.

Luo’er turned around, only to find Tangmo’s face really close to his, causing him to recoil slightly.

“Luo’er!” Tangmo didn’t mind his reaction.

Looking at him solemnly, she said, “We have a message from headquarters!”
