Assailant

The journey from the royal capital to the Duchy of Fudale was made easy and short by a large, high-speed carriage owned by Dalton.

The carriage was apparently expensive, and although it looked simple, it could withstand a direct hit from a Level 5 [fireball], according to the calculations.

Viro said, “I’ve never been hit by one. It can withstand a direct hit from a [Fireball], but it will be scrapped the second time.”

The lower part of the carriage had a hollow space of a few dozen centimeters where weapons and equipment that could not be brought inside could be stored, and they could also be taken out from under the bottom. The top of the roof was used for storing loot, and the space in between was where people ride, but there was enough room for a large Dalton or Feld to ride, so more than ten people could easily fit.

The carriage was pulled by four horses, but it seemed that the drive system was also a magical tool, and even when the horses were in tow, the carriage ran to some extent under its own power, powered by the Magic Stone.

“Listen, Aria, I brought you in because of your ability to use light magic, but I’m not going to let your fighting style go to waste, so basically you’ll be working as a scout.”

In the carriage, Dalton explained my role.

“How are you going to recover during the battle?”

“Even when Samantha was here, we didn’t heal during combat. We would basically just use potions after the battle. Aria will only heal wounds that would be a problem in battle. We are all combatants. It’s pointless wasting magic power and not being able to fight when the time comes. Even the magic recovery potions may become ineffective if you drink several of them regularly.”

“Understood.”

The current composition of the adventurers of Rainbow Sword looked like this:

-Heavy Warrior.

[Dalton Rockwall] [Race: Mountain Dwarf ??] [Rank 5]

[Magic: 250/250] [Strength: 512/512]

[Total Combat Power: 1940 (With Physical Enhancements: 2420)]

-Swordsman.

[Feld Ruin] [Race: Human ??] [Rank 5]

[Magic: 225/225] [Strength: 370/370]

[Total Combat Power: 1494 (With Physical Enhancements: 1908)]

-Scout – Light Warrior

[Viro Dawn] [Race: Human ??] [Rank 4]

[Magic: 172/220] 10Up [Strength: 283/320] 10Up

[Total Combat Power: 1056 (With Physical Enhancements: 1281)]

-Spirit User – Archer

[Miranda Momo] [Race: Forest Elf ??] [Rank 4]

[Magic Power: 350/350] [Strength: 175/175]

[Total Combat Power: 1097 (With Physical Enhancements: 1321)]

-Sorcerer and scout

[Aria] [Race: Human Female] [Rank 4]

[Magic: 270/270] [Strength: 210/210]

[Total Combat Power: 916 (With Physical Enhancements: 1123)]

As expected, the overall strength of the team was down since Samantha, a Rank 5 magician, retired, but according to Dalton, Feld and Viro were growing, so he thought we should be able to fight just well before depending on my and Mira’s magic.

Since the dungeon, our final destination this time, was on a remote island, the carriage would take us to a port town in Fudale territory.

Normally, one would take the relatively safe main road into the duke’s town and then head east to the port town, but we left the main road on the way and took the route through the forest. We were told that although this route was narrower than the main road, it was easier to use a horse-drawn carriage because not many ordinary travelers passed through.

We continued on through the forest, and when it was almost dark and time to look for an encampment, we were approached by a man who said to us, “Master Dalton, we are going to find a campsite.”

“Dalton-sama, I am hearing some noises which sound like a sword fight far ahead of us. From here, I can’t see the attacker or the one who is getting attacked, so what do you think?”

This gentleman was the old butler who had been managing Dalton’s mansion. He was not a butler in his own right, but a retired ex-Dark Side man with the skills of a Rank 2 scout, so his information was trustworthy.

“Some stupid trading company is being attacked? It’s a hassle, but it can’t be helped. Young man, get out of the wagon and go clean up a bit.”

Dalton instructed with a scowl. He looked uncomfortable because he had known that this road was not as safe as the main road. Still, with some escort, they would not be attacked, but the one being attacked probably did not have enough escort.

“So, shall we go?”

“Yes.”

Dalton agreed, and Feld and I got up from our seats.

Viro, on the other hand, tried to stand up, but he realized he was not a young man when his eyes met mine, and he returned to his seat.

Outside the carriage, I did indeed hear swords clashing in the distance, and Feld had noticed it, too, and his face turned a little grim as he looked ahead.

“It’s not demons…the sound of weapons clashing is heavy. It’s combat between trained combatants. Be careful, Aria.”

“Yes.”

Feld, after relaying this information to his steward, held two hatchets in both hands instead of a greatsword anticipating a melee, and I started running down the darkened street without drawing my weapon.

I, who had good night vision, took the lead, with Feld following closely behind.

A few dozen seconds into the run, I saw the faint glow of magic light and torches at the end of the road, and I began to get a glimpse of the situation.

“The victim is presumably a nobleman’s carriage. The attacker seems to be human, too.”

“Can you identify the enemy?”

“The assailant is in black leather armor with face hidden. So, are we going to help them?”

“If it’s that obvious, why not?”

“Okay, I’ll go ahead.”

I jumped out of the way as fast as I could at that moment. Even though Feld and I had the same agility level, I was faster than Feld in terms of running ability alone because I weighed less.

I saw several carriages of nobles. The number of escorts seemed small, but they were fighting evenly against nearly twice as many assailants, perhaps because of their skills.

I saw one knight among them struggling against three assailants, and immediately after that, I too moved into action.

“–[Shadow Pain]–“

“Gugya!”

One of the spear-wielding assailants screamed and went rigid, and I thrust my throwing knife between the eyebrows of the man next to him, who turned in surprise, and tore the rigid man’s neck with the pendulum of [Scythe Type], while I kicked the last black leather armor in the face with my rushing momentum, following with my black knife, I slashed at its throat.

“I’m just a passing adventurer. Is this the side under attack?”

“Uh, yeah.”

The knight nodded, stunned, though he was asking after killing the three black-armored men with or without a fight.

“Was the help unnecessary? I’ll go back if you don’t need it.”

“No, no, I appreciate your help, but there are more assailants than we anticipated  and I’m worried about the wagons ahead of us. But you…”

“I’m an adventurer, we are from [Rainbow Sword].”

The knights’ faces lit up with relief, as if the name Rainbow Sword was well-known to them. I was about to join them when several black-armored marauders came toward me, perhaps thinking that I was in their way.

I immediately fired a Heavy Type Pendulum into the darkness, striking the lead man in the side of the head from the side and piercing his throat with a throwing knife that I had pulled out of the slit.

The assailant’s fighting strength was around 250…the upper end of Rank 2, I would say. He was not a skilled fighter, but depending on his opponent’s resolve, he was not an opponent you could let your guard down against.

“Damn!”

I jumped into the air and struck him with my knee over the guard protecting his face, then inserted my arm through the gap in the guard and snapped the bone in his neck as I went behind him, wrapping my arm around his neck.

“Watch out!”

The knight’s voice was heard, as he saw two more attackers jump in with their swords ready, and the “hatchet” slipped past the knight’s sides as he jumped out to join them and drove it into the faces of the two attackers.

“Aria, you’re too fast!”

Feld complained as he caught up with the knight, and with the same momentum from his gallop, he pulled out a greatsword made of magical steel from his back and dived in, slicing one of the attackers in two.

“Oh, you’re one of them…?”

The knight’s voice was grazed by the sheer force of the attack. I nodded lightly to the knight and turned to Feld, who was looking for the next enemy.

“The wagons ahead of us are also being attacked.”

“Okay. You go that way. I’ll take care of the ones over here.”

“…Understood”

I knew it, but Feld was still strong. Even with a few Rank 3s mixed in, this level of opponent should be no problem as long as we’re not too careless.

I was a little concerned that he’s a bit too hard-headed, though…

I slipped between the attackers, who were a little taken back by Feld’s entry, and galloped off at a speed that no one else could keep up with.

As I passed by the attacked carriage, I saw a familiar coat of arms on the inside of a board that had been attacked and was almost peeled off.

(…Royal Crest?)

The same emblem was on the carriage that Elena had ridden in at the Dandol resort. If so, were these people related to the royal family?

If there was a possibility, it was either the Crown Prince or Elena’s carriage heading to the dungeon, but I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t use the safe main road for this level of escort.

They were not the only royal family, and if they’re taking this road, I hoped they were just carrying some urgent supplies…

As I continued on the road, I saw the black armor and the knights escorting them, lying in the dark. I didn’t need to check if they were alive or dead. My eyes, which could see the magical element, could understand that there was no life force left in them without the need to appraise them.

Was it a struggle? Or was there still some skill left in him?

*hyun!!!

At that moment, a knife flew out of the darkness of the forest, and I quickly popped it with a [general-purpose] knife from [Shadow Storage], and while hiding behind a tree, I threw the knife that I had pulled out from the slit of my skirt toward a shadow that I saw for a moment in the forest.

It was probably evaded. I couldn’t tell who he was in the darkness, but I could sense his strength from the shadow of his magical element that I could see for a moment.

[-NO NAME-] [Race: Human?]

[Magic Power: 182/220] [Strength: 221/260]

[Total Combat Power: 929 (With Physical Enhancements: 1126)]

The other party might have confirmed my combat power, and a “killing intent” that seemed to shake the forest engulfed in the darkness gushed out.

I see. There was a skilled fighter.
